However, the content of these books is EXCELLENT because the editors worked very hard on this project. I know them and they have dedicated their lives to helping children and families with autism--including MY family. No one was more shocked at the price of this two volume set than they were. I was also a contributor. Note: neither myself nor any other contributor was paid for their submission--we did it to HELP people. But $200 is outrageous, I agree. Save your dough! If you need suggestions for what books to buy email me!
If you want to buy the best quality books in the autism field at the most reasonable prices, stick to books from the Autism Asperger Publishing Company (AAPC) and avoid big publishers who don't care. Brenda Myles, one of the editors of this set, had written a book and the would-be publishers wanted to sell it for too much money so her husband, Keith Myles started the publishing company in order to sell it CHEAPER. The most important thing to both of them was that this information got out there in order to help these kids on the spectrum. AAPC started with that one book, Difficult Moments, and within six years became the second largest autism publishing company in the world. Buy your books from them because they really care about our families and understand our challenges, financial and otherwise. Women and Gaming: The Sims and 21st Century Learning ReviewThis book is the latest in a long series of books and articles by noted literacy, education and games scholars - James Paul Gee and Elisabeth Hayes. I found this book to be highly engaging and quite readable as they provide a wealth of real examples and poignant descriptions demonstrating how women and girls are using the popular Sims video games. It is interesting to note however, most of the emphasis is not on playing the Sims game specifically but Gee and Hayes describe instead how these innovative women are going beyond the game and leveraging the virtual communities around the game to meet their own specific interests.
As an educator myself - and a person who's not a digital native, I also see this book as providing a tremendous resource for educators looking to integrate technology in the classroom and indeed those educators who are looking to develop a broader understanding of the richer "beyond game" practices gamers are engaged in. For example, I found the chapter on writing fan fiction to be extremely relevant to the high school students I work with. Given all the hype around Twilight and all things vampire, the authors' account of vampire fan fiction is quite timely in terms of popular culture but also in terms of the digital storytelling techniques many educators are working to implement in the classroom. This chapter describes in detail the participatory writing processes embedded in these fan fiction communities. Their accounting of Alex's trajectory of writing denotes how her writing improves over time and also chronicles a common characteristic of this genre of writing - the impact of instant and iterative audience feedback uniquely present in these fan fiction communities. However, a point that I particularly enjoyed - the authors directly take on the arguments more "high-brow" critics use to disparage such activities, illustrating that fan fiction writing clearly has a place among more notable literacy genres.
Overall I see this book as providing two major overarching contributions: First, it provides a necessary discussion of the innovative gaming practices engaged in by women and girls playing the Sims. This is important to note because the gender issue is frequently only addressed in games-based discussions in conjunction with commentary on their lack of participation with this media. In addition, as the authors note, this gaming franchise has been largely neglected in the literature about gaming and as the largest selling game franchise in history, it bears exploration. Gee and Hayes go beyond the issue of gender based disparities and actually depict not only practices germane to the Sims and Sims communities, but clearly and thoughtfully identify and discuss the productivity of these practices. This dovetails with the second accomplishment of this text - a theme that's back grounded as a through thread - a provocative running commentary on the current state of education and educational reform initiatives. The authors skillfully juxtapose current education practices against those evolving in gaming communities and digital media culture highlighting what we might learn from the richly productive practices embedded in and beyond gaming.

The Green and Virtual Data Center ReviewGreg Schulz has delivered with both a timely and informative book. With the economic meltdown occurring in 2008 every company has become focused on cost containment both for Cap Ex and Op Ex and the data center is in forefront. This is taking place at the same time as heighten awareness of our planets ecology and the impact of IT and data centers. As Schulz states in his summary chapter: "The objective is to lower cost, boost productivity, and improve service delivery to meet performance and availability objectives in a flexible or agile manner that also helps the environment."
In the first chapter Schulz coins the acronym PCFE for power, cooling, floor space and environmental to aggregate the IT infrastructure issues that are core to green initiatives. As I read through the book I substituted PC Fe for Politically Correct Iron because in my mind it reflects what Schulz calls the "green gap".This "green gap" is the separation of ecological and economic factors that are tied to the data center. On one hand we have the concerns about global warming, green-house gases, and carbon emissions while on the other we have data growth, power and cooling cost, stock holders looking for profits and the perceived cost to be green. The case is presented that this gap is more one of language and attitude as opposed to reality. If IT directors and facility managers implement best practices to design and run their data centers they will find in most cases they align with green objectives because it makes business sense.
The book is divided into four sections. In the first section there is a summary of the issues facing CIOs and IT directors around energy consumption, safety requirements for the disposal or equipment, and what green IT means. The second section looks at current trends in data center infrastructure and how they can be effectively monitored and managed. The third examines the technologies which are enabling virtualization and driving current trends like cloud computing. This is Mr. Schulz's area of core competency and has the most in depth coverage. In the final portion of the book there are practical applications of the concepts discussed in the other sections. I found the format to be a good organization that kept key areas together and the overall coverage of the topics to be of sufficient depth. I would recommend this book to anyone wants to understand the impact of "green IT" as well how the convergence of a number of technologies has created potential for virtual IT infrastructure.

Engineering Play: A Cultural History of Children's Software (The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning) ReviewFor me, this book is simultaneously insightful and nostalgic. I grew up playing games like "Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego", "The Castle of Dr. Brain", and "SimCity", so Ito's ethnographic coverage of kids at an after-school program who played such games reminded me of my own childhood, as viewed through the lens of a cultural anthropologist. For instance, while using SimCity's disasters to decimate a city was something I used to do as a kid, I'd always assumed it was a "bad" use of the game, but Ito actually interprets such actions in an entirely different way.
The book doesn't just look at how kids play these games, though. It also examines, for instance, how the marketing of some of these games mobilized middle-class parental anxieties about achievement, or how the entrepreneurs who started educational game companies soon found themselves to be victims of their own success. Or how the entrenched agendas of educational institutions can sometimes work against learning instead of fostering it.
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that because it's written for researchers, it can be a bit jargony at times. For instance, the first 20 pages or so are dedicated to explaining research methodology and what makes it different from other books in the field, which I wasn't terribly concerned with.
Ultimately, though, this book was a pleasure to read, and was complex enough to warrant multiple readings. What's covered in here would probably be useful for parents, educators, game developers, entrepreneurs, cultural anthropologists, marketers, and anyone who, like me, once played these games as a kid.

Best Practices in School Neuropsychology: Guidelines for Effective Practice, Assessment, and Evidence-Based Intervention (Wiley Desktop Editions) ReviewBest Practices in School Neuropsychology is a well-written guidebook for school psychologists who believe that an important goal of education is to provide experiences that result in maximum possible learning for individual students and who wish to pursue a brain-based and cognitive route to practice. This book is of particular importance when considering the education of learners with diverse neurobiological systems who arrive at school with great variations in their readiness to succeed academically. The field of school neuropsychology offers guidance to school psychologists for both assessing these individuals and assisting teachers to remediate student challenges and teach to learners' strengths.
Importantly, in the foreword by Elaine Fletcher-Janzen, the reader is reminded of the importance of neuroscientific findings in the area of reading. Specifically, that the brain has a greater degree of plasticity than once thought and that through educational interventions we can achieve long-term positive reading outcomes. Later, Fletcher-Janzen continues `Executive functions, for example, are critical to reading comprehension.' Today when psychologists examine executive functions we can also see how the child's attention and memory work. Exploring these and other cognitive functions can assist school psychologists to guide other educators in order to differentiate instruction.
The editor implies that as the 1990s, the so called `Decade of the Brain,' fade into the past and each decade brings more excitement and information about human potential, it seems that school psychologists interested in the brain and cognitive connections have a meaningful part to play both in research and practice. School neuropsychologists can bring important knowledge about cognitive processes to the discussion of brain function and student achievement to inform research as well as practice in schools.
This book is organized broadly around three topics: 1) Professional issues in school neuropsychology, 2) Practice issues in school neuropsychology, and 3) Clinical applications in school neuropsychology. Editor, Daniel Miller, has provided a book that contains current and key information for school psychologists who may be interested in obtaining further education in the field, or those who may want to read to enhance their understanding of the brain and cognition, for example in areas such as RTI (Response to Intervention) and assessment of children with various learning challenges including academic disabilities, processing deficits, and medical disorders. Lastly, it should be mentioned that also included is `the rationale for the importance of school psychologists' collaboration with parents, educators and other professionals' in the community and `unique challenges in working with culturally diverse populations.'

Theory and Educational Research: Toward Critical Social Explanation (Critical Youth Studies) ReviewThis is an excellent discussion of how to effectively use critical social theory in a dissertation or other research. Most of the book consists of thoughtful descriptions by 6 of Anyon's former doctoral students of how they used theory in their dissertation research; Anyon provides a valuable introductory chapter, and Michelle Fine's epilogue gives a useful commentary on the the 6 dissertation chapters. Two comments: 1) the book focuses almost exclusively on what's called critical social theory (Marxist, feminist, postmodern, critical race theory, and other "progressive" theories), although many of the points made are applicable to using theory in general. A book that provides a good discussion of using a broader range of theories is Mark Dressman, Using social theory in educational research: A practical guide. 2) I would have liked to see more critique of the theories used; this is something that Dressman's book devotes more attention to.

Theoreticians, on the other hand, rarely test their ideas with empirical projects. As this groundbreaking volume makes clear, however, neither data nor theory alone is adequate to the task of social explanation-rather they form and inform each other as the inquiry process unfolds. Theory and Educational Research bridges the age-old theory/research divide by demonstrating how researchers can use critical social theory to determine appropriate empirical research strategies, and extend the analytical, critical - and sometimes emancipatory - power of data gathering and interpretation. Each chapter models a theoretically informed empiricism that places the data research yields in constant conversation with theoretical arsenals of powerful concepts. Supervision: A Redefinition ReviewSergiovanni and Starratt bring to light wonderful ideas for supervision during the next century. They force the reader to consider doing away with school and evaluations as we currently know them. They suggest moving away from evaluation and instead replacing it with healthy, supportive, and collegial supervision. These are all great ideas based upon what we have seen occur in many business settings.
The only problem I see with the authors' ideas is that one would have to basically recreate education as we currently know it in order to implement their vision of supervision. The change would have to be systemic all the way from the national level to the local levels. However, this may not be a bad thing.
The authors have very enlightening ideas contained in a very thought-provoking bookSupervision: A Redefinition OverviewFirst published in 1971 and now the best known book in the field, Supervision: A Redefinition continues to be the leading text for combining an in-depth view of theory and research for supervision with practical applications. The Seventh Edition continues a thirty-year tradition of breaking new ground by continuously redefining the field of supervision in response to changing school contexts, policies, and realities. The practical applications are supported by a conception of supervision as moral agency. The book continues to promote a new vision, or redefinition, of supervision from that of a top-down activity performed by higher-ups in the school hierarchy, to one in which supervision is a shared activity involving all stake-holders in the school including teachers, administrators, and parents. The book sees schools as communities rather than organizations, and emphasizes the student-teacher relationship rather than bureaucratic functions.

Vygotsky at Work and Play ReviewEvery now and then you get lucky, and find the book that is just the book you need at that point in your career to take the next step forward. (I used "book" in this opening sentence, but the same could be said for "article" or "presentation," but here we are concerned with books.) Lois Holzman's Vygotsky at Work and Play is just that sort of book. Up until reading it, I had been unaware of Lois Holzman's work, and this book is a great introduction. It is a kind of intellectual autobiography, a conceptual reflection on her several decades of good work. The book is short, well-written, and a great lead-in to the work Holzman has done, mostly in partnership with Fred Newman. Their work is both multifaceted and highly innovative, and it challenges some traditional conceptions about how science is done. Their work is multifaceted because they have made significant contributions to therapy (social therapy), schooling, out-of-school (youth) programs, and the workplace (organizations). The same conceptual principles underly all of this work, which derive mainly from Vygotsky and Wittgenstein. Their work is innovative for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their methodology. Part of their innovation is their (re)conceptualization of Vygotsky's "Zone of Proximal Development," and another part is their emphasis on performance, both as a product and a process of development in context. This is a book worth reading.Vygotsky at Work and Play OverviewVygotsky at Work and Play relates the discoveries and insights of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky to ordinary people and their communities. Dissociation in Traumatized Children and Adolescents: Theory and Clinical Interventions (Routledge Psychosocial Stress Series) ReviewTrauma in children is often either ignored ("oh, he's too young to remember this, so don't bring it up and it won't affect him"), trivialized ("oh, children are resilient, they aren't affected the way adults are, she'll be ok"), or pathologized ("he has lots of tantrums so he must be bi-polar; she cannot sit still so she must have ADHD; he doesn't do well in school so he must have a learning disability; she argues all the time so she has oppositional defiant disorder").
Reality is, children are affected by trauma, and affected deeply. Even more than adults might, given that they do not have the life experiences with which to temper overwhelm, and are often too small and too helpless to be able to fight back, or remove themselves from the situation, and all too often are dependent on the very people who maltreat them (97% of child maltreatment is by persons known to the child and upward of 70% is by a child's parent).
With no one to go to, and no way to remove themselves, children do whatever they can, which often includes mentally 'taking themselves out of the picture' by dissociating, by numbing physical and emotional pain, by 'looking from the side', by 'having this happen to someone else, another little boy or girl, not me'. It is a good way to get through trauma at the time--sometimes the only way a child has at their disposal--but it comes at a price: The price of being able to stay connected to their own body, to move on and not have their reality 'boobytrapped' with triggers of the trauma that launch them right back into re-experiencing it, by detaching them from good and pleasant expriences as well as the ucky ones, by not letting them adapt to a changing reality, by preventing them from attaching to caregivers who are not abusive, by limiting their avility to let in new information, to communicate their experiences, to make friends, to fully be themselves.
The price of surviving trauma is often astronomical for children. However, with correct diagnosis and careful, compassionate, trauma-informed treatment; they CAN heal, reconnect, love, live.
"Dissociation in traumatized children and adolescent" offers a window into how this healing can take place. It describes not only how dissociation happens, what it looks like, what it does and what it 'costs' to the child (and their caregivers) later on; but also how it can be mended and how true resiliency can be found. Not through ignoring or minimizing but through attending, understanding, reconnecting, processing, and moving on.

Each chapter in the book addresses a different child, of a different age, with a different therapist, sometimes from a different country, with very differnt backgrounds and trauma histories, and with different approaches. And yet, they all move toward the same goal: to reconnect fragmented experiences into an integrated experience, so they child is no longer trapped in the wreckage of their trauma and can truly be free of it.
If you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of a therapy room (or a school room--where traumatized children spend most of everyday); this is your chance. Do not miss it, for you will learn not only about the treatment of traumatized children, but about the inner workings of children's minds and the amazing courage and spirit they possess that can allow them to overcome their pain.
If you are a psychotherapist--you need to read this: it will give you an understanding not only of child clients, but of the adult clients who come to see you (and who were all children once).
If you are an educator--you need to read this: it will give you a perspective of the 'problem children' in your classroom; AND how to help them better.
If you are a medical professional working with children--you need to read this: it will help you understand those children with so-called 'psychogenic problems'; why they may be having unexplained pains, and what may be done to help resolve them.
If you are a foster parent or adoptive parent or anyone in a foster/adoption agency, if you work in child-services as a social worker, lawyer, forensic investigator, law enforcement--you need to read it. Period.
You will understand the children you see better. You will be able to help them better. You will know who to refer them to better.

Unfortunately, very little of this literature has addressed the issue of dissociation in children. At the same time, therapists working with children and adolescents have become increasingly aware of the occurrence of trauma and dissociation in their clients. Dissociation in Traumatized Children and Adolescents is a groundbreaking text for the study of dissociation in young people. In eight unique and compelling case studies, the authors lay out detailed narratives that illustrate both therapy progression as well as the therapist's reactions and thought process during case development. These case studies present many aspects of working with traumatized children who dissociate-trauma processing, attachment work, work with the family, interactions with the community-and give frank analysis of the difficulties clinicians encounter in various therapeutic situations and how and why they arrived at particular therapeutic decisions. While the book includes intensive analysis of each author's theoretical framework as well as that of dissociation in general, it also shows clinicians, in the most practical terms, how to translate the theories of dissociation into action. e-Learning and the Science of Instruction: Proven Guidelines for Consumers and Designers of Multimedia Learning (Essential Knowledge Resource) ReviewAs someone who has been designing multimedia elearning programs since '95, I found this book simply the most useful book on this subject for anyone serious about getting multimedia learning right.
The book is full of references to well designed studies published in refereed jounals where the principles discussed were meticulously examined by learning researchers.
This is refreshing in a field where most books are anecdotes written by programmers (ala Michael Allen) or website designers. This book actually gives you design principles to follow to increase student learning while debunking many (too)popular theories about good design (such as the usefulness of extra tidbits of information, how to mix pictures and text, when to use audio in an animation, whether a self-playing presentation is better than one where the user clicks through, etc, whether all learners learn best from non-linear presentation, etc.).

The Rise and Fall of Languages ReviewR M Dixon is a well known linguist who specializes in the aboriginal languages of Australia. In this captivating book, Dixon presents his theory of punctuated equilibrium (adopted from the idea of the same name by evolutionary theorists Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge) to describe how languages change. Dixon challenges linguists to dedicate more time to the study and description of the thousands of languages on the verge of extinction, rather than devote their energies to arcane formalisms. The author is also highly critical of those historical linguists who claim to have found evidence for the "mother of all languages", accusing them of poor methodology. Historical linguistics involves slow and painstaking analysis of language forms, and Dixon is not the first to chastise newcomers for shoddy work. Dixon's book is not overly technical, and is thus suited for both a professional and a lay audience.
