As theoristsposit new futures and call for an end to historically grounded, or discipline-based, so-called silo approaches to knowledges, a de facto reorganization of disciplinary boundaries and a migratory spirit have spontaneously infused the humanities with new life. These transmigrations, instead of diffusing the disciplinary terrain, have strengthened and broadened existing fields. They are provoking re-mappings of intellectual topography, and, ironically, have brought about more rather than less integration. Activated by such massive cultural shifts as the turn from print to visual culture; the technological revolution and its virtual sublimes; the acceleration of scientific advances; the rise and incorporation of mass or popular culture and the possibilities of replication, the humanities are producing integrated knowledges, what we are calling new TechKnowledgies, that interface the humanities, the arts, the social and hard sciences with digital technologies and research emerging at the borders of all these fields.

Software Reuse Techniques: Adding Reuse to the System Development Process ReviewUnlike many other books on this subject, McClure demystifies a subject usually enmeshed by theory and complex terminology. It is a must for any program manager or architect charged with implementing a reuse adoption progam into their organisation. Its one weakness is its bias towards o-o development methods, which leads to a lack of guidance regarding more traditional structured development methodologies.Software Reuse Techniques: Adding Reuse to the System Development Process Overview66100-9 Make software reuse work! Step-by-step techniques, proven strategies. Software reuse is the most important concept in software in the last twenty years. Software reuse can dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of software development. But few organizations are realizing the potential of reuse. What's missing? Specific techniques for incorporating reuse into the development lifecycle. Software Reuse Techniques fills that gap. In this book, the world's foremost expert on reuse presents a step-by-step guide to implementing reuse-from planning through maintenance, for object-oriented, component-based, and Internet-enabled software application development.Carma McClure distills her unparalleled consulting experience into practical solutions for:*Effectively reusing existing components *Identifying components most likely to be reusable *Identifying "families" of applications that lend themselves to reuse *Building new components with reuse in mind *Planning for reuse, and conducting readiness audits *Establishing a reuse library/catalog that works *Managing reuseMcClure shows how reuse changes the software development process, and "who does what" in organizations committed to reuse. She demonstrates how to reuse not just source code, but also requirements specifications, designs, test scripts, project plans, documentation, object frameworks and more. Next, she presents 16 different reuse techniques in detail, with case studies. Organizations that have successfully implemented reuse have achieved powerful cost and quality advantages. Reuse works-and you can make it happen. This book contains the techniques-and the proof.

Form-Oriented Analysis ReviewThis is a book that has been needed for a long time. There have been studies in the past, indeed a body of knowledge even, on the design of paper based forms. The problem with computer based forms such as those for ordering a book from Amazon is that the forms tend to be generated by programmers, not forms specialists. In fact in this book the examples being used are from a hypothetical on line book store.
At one point the authors are giving an example of a book page of an online bookshop. On it they give an abstract of their own (that is this) book. It reads: "What is the business logic of n enterprise system? How do I specify it in such a way that I know how to transform it into a running system, by skill and by automated tool support? This book gives a self-contained introduction to the modeling and development of business logic for enterprise systems."
In practice, the authors develop a couple of new technologies for the modelling of such forms. Page Diagrams are analagous to flow charts that show what a page does in terms of its interactions. From the home or Welcome page you can go register, go login, look at suggested books, do a search, etc. What links to what? What logic applies (bad password for instance, or is this user logged in). The page diagram is a way for the non-technical manager and the programmer to define exactly what a page or screen is supposed to do. It can become part of the specification that the programmer uses to produce what management wants.
The next concept the authors develop is the Form Storyboard. The storyboard shows pages with respect to the actions they cause in the server.
Other models such as information pages, and data interchange complete the description of the forms related system. For the most part, HTML based web sites are used as examples in this book. But the same kind of modelling is equally applicable to form/database related system such as accounting, payroll or other business applications.
Using the approach developed by these authors is the best way I've seen to document/specify/design a forms based interactive system.Form-Oriented Analysis OverviewForm-based applications range from simple web shops to complex enterprise resource planning systems. Draheim and Weber adapt well-established basic modeling techniques in a novel way to achieve a modeling framework optimized for this broad application domain. They introduce new modeling artifacts, such as page diagrams and form storyboards, and separate dialogue patterns to allow for reuse. In their implementation they have developed new constructs such as typed server pages, and tools for forward and reverse engineering of presentation layers. The methodology is explained using an online bookshop as a running example in which the user can experience the modeling concepts in action. The combination of theoretical achievements and hands-on practical advice and tools makes this book a reference work for both researchers in the areas of software architectures and submit-response style user interfaces, and professionals designing and developing such applications. More information and additional material is also available online.

Laboratory Information Management Systems Revised & Expanded ReviewThere are better descriptions of Laboratory Information Management for free in a trade magazines and white papers on any vendor site. Most of the book consists of definitions. The first chapter, titled, "Historical Perspective," should be about the early development of LIMS; surprise it is a list of historic events in the evolution of computers
The chapter on LIMS evaluations has a section that is two sentences long on the topic of Hardware/Software Configurations. It informs the reader that the vendor should inform you as to whether the software will run on your computer. Duh! The next section on Database Management tops this in that it is a whole sentence long. I can only wonder what the first edition of this book was like, since this is the expanded version. This is more like an outline for a book that should be written, or a student term paper that was written the night before it was due.
I am now totally annoyed that I have to spend by lunch hour going to the post to return this book.
Laboratory Information Management Systems Revised & Expanded Overview"Details the most recent advances in Laboratory Information Management Systems. Offers contemporary approaches to system development, design, and installation; system customization; software and hardware compatibility; quality assurance and regulatory requirements; and resource utilization."

The Eclipse of Keynesianism: The Political Economy of the Chicago Counter-Revolution ReviewLeeson(L)essentially is republishing a few past journal articles. He includes one new essay in an attempt to tie the book together. His discussion of the Keynes-Tinbergen exchange of 1939-1940 on the methodology of ecomometrics,as well as Tinbergen's belief that he could test different theories of the business cycle and correctly model expectations, is badly marred by his belief that other economists, like M. Friedman and R. Lucas ,whose partially correct analysis appeared in print 20-40 years after the pathbreaking work of Keynes, deserves equal billing with Keynes's seminal contribution that should stand alone.A vastly superior treatment of these topics was published in 2000 by H.A.Keuzenkamp,titled "Probability,Econometrics and Truth",by Cambridge University Press.Strangely,L,whose book appeared over a year later, does not cite Keuzenkamp's book. Finally, the reader on a budget would do well to xerox the essay by H.Pesaran and P.Smith, titled"Keynes on Econometrics" contained in a book of essays called"Keynes's Economics:Methodological Issues",edited by Pesaran and Lawson in 1985.L's book is simply not worth the money .If you are going to buy a book in this area ,buy Keuzenkamp's.Period.The Eclipse of Keynesianism: The Political Economy of the Chicago Counter-Revolution OverviewThis book examines the process by which Keynesianism, with its sympathetic view of the role of government in the economy and society, lost influence among economists and policy makers and was replaced by more negative views about government intervention and more positive views about the role of the market as a social organizer.

Building and Sustaining Resilience in Complex Organizations ReviewI have had excellent experiences with amazon.com, since the company began. My previous purchases have been excellent products.
Is not the case in this book. Just two or three ideas are valuable and a very bad and irresponsible editing. All figures (essential to understand the issue clearly, possibly created in color) have been miserably poor become shades of gray, little letters that make it almost impossible to read. Really, nice in this book is only the cover.
I Do not return the book, because not to cause additional discomfort to a friend through which it buys, but I decided to make this comment to prevent other unsuspecting lose their investment.
Building and Sustaining Resilience in Complex Organizations OverviewThe role of, and the means to achieve, resilience (the capacity to be sustainable through the impact of multitudinous future changes in a connected, dynamic environment) are increasingly the focus of corporate strategy departments and government think tanks. The increasing volatility in economic markets, the natural environment and society generally require new tools to think about, and take meaningful action towards, the achievement and maintenance of resilient policies and practices. The field of Complexity Thinking arguably has a significant role to play in both informing and assisting our organizations in achieving resilience in this context. This workshop aimed to explore the nature of this role and the ways in which Complexity Science may be combined with other disciplines to increase resilience in many areas of human endeavor. We hope that the papers offers here represent a broad basis from which to begin such an exploratory discussion.

Economics and Hermeneutics ReviewThis book of collected essays presents an interesting overview of hermeneutics(the study of the methodological principles of interpreting literary works)as currently applied in the field of economics. The essays are broken up into four different categories. The first group of essays discusses the meaning of the term hermeneutics primarily from the economists perspective. The second set of essays covers applications of hermeneutics from Neoclassical,Institutionalist,Austrian, and Marxist perspectives. It also includes an essay by McCloskey on her rhetoric of economics approach. This essay is badly marred by a careless, incorrect assessment of Keynes's General Theory(1936;GT).I have deducted one star on the basis of this error. The third part of the book offers an indepth analysis of controversies in Austrian economics over issues such as pricing and expectations. The final group of essays attempts to apply hermeneutics to areas such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, and a number of issues in public policy.Essay four by McCloskey, titled "Storytelling in Economics",incorporates a major omission.Hermeneutics can be a valuable tool for a researcher studying economic works that a)contain no precise, concise formal mathematical model of the theory presented by the author(for example ,Adam Smith,David Ricardo,Thomas Malthus,Karl Marx, John R. Commons, etc.)or b)contain serious mathematical errors of exposition.McCloskey makes the following claim:"This is why obscure texts are often influencial.Keynes left many opportunities for readers to run their own motion pictures, filling in the blanks".(McCloskey,p.73).The fact is that the opposite is the case.On pp.261-262,Keynes spells out the major formal mathematical conclusion in his GT twice.Only a mathematically illiterate, inept, and innumerant reader would not be able to follow Keynes's meaning.Keynes states that the nescessary and sufficient optimality condition for a macroeconomy to have no involuntary unemployment present is that the marginal propensity to consume is equal to 1.If investment spending is an option because the capital stock is not at an optimal level, then the mpc+mpi must equal 1,where mpc equals the marginal propensity to consume and mpi equals the marginal propensity to invest.Keynes then spends all of chapter 20 deriving his major mathematical conclusion, starting from the basic microfoundations of purely competitive firms and industries, that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi)is the required condition integrating the commodity and labor markets. In chapter 21 he extends this basic condition to incorporate the money market. If mpc+mpiEconomics and Hermeneutics OverviewEconomics and Hermeneutics looks at the ways that hermeneutics might help economists address problems such as entrepreneurship, price theory, rational expectations, monetary theory, welfare economics and economic policy.

IT Project Management Handbook ReviewThis book doesn't seem to fit the mold of any other PM book I've read. Although it's written as an end-to-end book by two authors, it is nearly an anthology in the scope and range of topics. The structure and sequence doesn't appear designed to teach project management. On the other hand, the techniques and processes presented are solid and reflect best practices in IT project management.
Section I starts out like any PM book by covering IT's unique environment and project management processes that align to it. This is one of the strongest sections because it covers project planning and estimating in detail. The chapter on estimating techniques and tools is especially good, as is the chapter on quality control. Section II follows with excellent material on risk management, best practices standards and system measurement techniques. This section also covers popular PM software applications, including Project Kickstart and MS Project, as well as other tools that are commonly used to plan, schedule and control IT projects.
It's in Section III where the book abruptly shifts direction. The chapters in this section cover network management and internet applications, and distributed objects and associated technology. While these are certainly topics that IT project managers need to understand, this section breaks the logical sequencing that was presented in the preceding sections. Despite this, the material does portray the challenges faced by IT project managers, and gives excellent advice for dealing with them. The wireless case study at the end of this section reinforces all of the key points that the authors make in the first three sections.
Section IV focuses on requirements and design, and, like Sections I through III, contain an abundant amount of information that represents best practices and sound PM methods.
Material that I particularly like include the focus on customer satisfaction (especially the approach to acceptance criteria), earned value, and project recovery methods. If you want a book from which to learn IT project management you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you're an experienced IT project manager you'll find this book to be full of techniques and information. In spite of the problematic structure I find myself referring to it frequently and have made it one of my primary references.IT Project Management Handbook OverviewIT project management has developed into a complex process with a broader scope of responsibilities than ever before. Here is the newest and most comprehensive book to offer winning insights and strategies on how to manage every step of the process. Written by two of this country's leading experts on IT Project Management, this extensive yet easy-to-use volume will give you the tools you need to successfully navigate your next IT project. You'll learn how to avoid cost overruns and schedule delays, meet customer requirements, take control of budgets and resource allocation, build a successful team, and put to use many more tried-and-true methods of project management. The handbook includes a completely up-to-date overview of the best Internet services, current software, and repositories available via the Internet along with networking, e-commerce, reuse, prototype, modeling and simulations. It's all contained in this user-friendly handbook that will soon become the foundation for every IT project you manage ...or take part in.Based on real-world practical experience and case studies, the Handbook will give you the framework to manage, improve, and build greater accuracy into every phase of your IT project management.

Electronic Business in Developing Countries: Opportunities and Challenges ReviewThis is an excellent addition to the literature on electronic business, obviously focusing on this activity in emerging markets. The book contains twenty individual studies of electronic commerce of various kinds (B2B, B2C, electronic banking, electronic brokerage) in emerging markets ranging from India to Egypt to Eastern Europe. The individual chapters almost all provide valuable new empirical evidence on the extent of e-commerce in the different countries, the barriers faced in building up such business in emerging markets, and a number of suggestions about how firms should proceed to take advantage of e-commerce in their own contexts.
The studies by Sridhar and Sridhar on India and by Pucihar and Podlogar on Slovenia exemplify the careful and detailed analyses in this book. The India study presents a conceptual model of e-commerce adoption and then provides a series of empirical examples of firms and levels of activity that show how e-commerce is growing and what the limitations are in that country. The Slovenia study by contrast uses an interview methodology to study e-commerce activity of 119 large firms in that country. In each instance the authors have given a well-documented analysis of the question of e-commerce penetration of the two countries.
I was interested to see how on-line job recruitment is growing in Egypt, based on the study by Nahed Azab. It sounded like a parallel to the situation in the US, with the additional restrictions of a lower level of internet penetration, higher costs of gaining access to the on-line job market, and some degree of resistance to this vehicle. The path model tested by Azab is logically structured and appropriately tested to evaluate a series of hypotheses concerning technology acceptance in Egypt. Though it is not clear how the sample of 124 people were chosen to respond to the author's questions, the demographics are interesting, and the responses are certainly useful.
There are no ultimate conclusions presented in this project. Kamel's introduction summarizes the papers that constitute the book, but he draws no conclusions other than to say that the empirical content of the papers will give us a better understanding of the limitations and opportunities for e-commerce in emerging markets. He is right in making this claim, though I would have liked to see some more detailed thought about the implications of this situation for companies and for government policymakers. The empirical evidence, in any event, really offers a wealth of new information and knowledge to the reader.
Electronic Business in Developing Countries: Opportunities and Challenges OverviewMost of the literature covering electronic business focused on the developed world. B2B and Beyond: New Business Models Built on Trust ReviewI just finished reading this book and recommend it enthusiastically to anybody interested in how B2Bs and extended enterprises must work in the future. The book is broken down into 3 parts: Part 1 explains how B2Bs interact and how trust plays a critical role, Part 2 discusses the concept of e-Trust and business processes by industry, and Part 3 discusses e-infrastructure, security, and controls on a more technical level. Overall, the author manages to provide clear and comprehensive coverage on an exremely challenging, constantly evolving subject.B2B and Beyond: New Business Models Built on Trust OverviewIn our turbo charged e-environment two or more business entities may simultaneously be each other's customer, supplier, ally, and competitor. How does a B2B survive? This book provides a strong rational and helpful guidance for B2Bs to embrace a new concept called e-trust. E-trust requires a thorough understanding of security, controls, business processes, technology functions, and most importantly the development of collaborative trusting relationships. This is not merely an e-security book. It is business strategy book outlining the new model for B2B success.

Alphabet to Email : How Written English Evolved and Where It's Heading ReviewEvery communications technology has significantly affected the nature of human language. With the growing ubiquity of the Internet, this is an appropriate time to take a look at the effect of technological change on language and to see if historical patterns repeat themselves in the virtual world.
I am personally fascinated by languages. I'm amazed by the richness and variety of human communication, and by the constant change in vocabulary, grammar and style. In comparison to other languages, written English is pretty close to spoken English-even parts of this review uses language similar to what I might use in an intellectual conversation about a book on linguistics. Still, I thought that I'd give Baron a chance, and see what she had to say. I'm glad that I did.
This is not a book for academics. It is written for the educated and somewhat motivated layperson. With a glib style, and a keen awareness of the need to explain linguistic concepts to her readers, Baron's book is informative and enjoyable. According to the author, written English was once virtually identical to speech, serving as a record of spoken words. As needs changed, and technology permitted, language patterns in written English diverged significantly from spoken English. However, and perhaps motivated by the requirements and capabilities of new transportation and telecommunications technologies, written English has made a decisive retreat from the formal, and appears to be reconverging towards spoken language patterns.
She paints a dynamic picture of the historical ballet of written English. The give and take as the prescriptivists (think William Safire) and the descriptivists each have their day.Since the 1960s, American dictionaries have been largely descriptive, no longer trying to impose the ideals of their editors on the language, but instead trying to provide a written reference to actual usage (this is why contemporary dictionaries include profanities).
Not being a big fan of anything written before the late 19th century, I can easily accept that written language has become less formal. For me, Mark Twain was one of the earliest writers to use a style that doesn't feel horribly anachronistic. Interestingly enough, Twain was the first author to provide his publisher with a typewritten book manuscript. Baron makes a compelling case for the influence of technology, like the typewriter, on the English language. Again and again, the significance of new communications technologies is often completely misunderstood. Conservative social elements resist new technologies out of concern for their perceived negative effect on cultural values. Perhaps justifying this natural social backlash, once a communications technology becomes commonplace, it results in permanent changes on written and spoken language.
So what will be the effect of the Internet on our mother tongue? I wouldn't spoil a good story by leaking the ending, but I can tell you that her conclusions are well-reasoned and highly credible. If you are even mildly interested in language issues, communications, or the social effects of the Internet, then you will find this an enjoyable and informative text. If you are interested in further reading or research, you'll be pleased with the lengthy bibliography.Alphabet to Email : How Written English Evolved and Where It's Heading OverviewIn Alphabet to Email Naomi Baron takes us on a fascinating and often entertaining journey through the history of the English language, showing how technology - especially email - is gradually stripping language of its formality.Drawing together strands of thinking about writing, speech, pedagogy, technology, and globalization, Naomi Baron explores the ever-changing relationship between speech and writing and considers the implications of current language trends on the future of written English.Alphabet to Email will appeal to anyone who is curious about how the English language has changed over the centuries and where it might be going.

The IT Value Quest: How to Capture the Business Value of IT-Based Infrastructure ReviewThe author covers a broad array of very important infrastructure topics. The book is useful and valuable for anyone who has ever tried to justify the value of IT-based infrastructure projects. However, two of today's most powerful tools, real options analysis and simulation, are dismissed by the author as too complicated or abstract to be of any use for managers. While Renkema is correct to presume that most managers do ahve have a handle on these concepts, I was somewhat dissapointed to see that he did not encourage these avenues of methods to get at better numbers with which one can quantify the value of infrastructure. Nevertheless, the book is full of useful information regarding the decision-making process within bureaucratic environments as well as dealing with topics such as risk, argument structure, financial analysis, and qualitative analysis. The IT Value Quest: How to Capture the Business Value of IT-Based Infrastructure OverviewThe IT Value Quest How to Capture the Business Value of IT-based infrastructure Theo J.W. Renkema Although the potential of information technology (IT) is beyond dispute, it proves to be very difficult to evaluate its true business value. In the present competitive business arena, modern IT provides the enabling infrastructure for efficient and effective business operations, leveraging business improvements and securing a competitive edge. Capturing the value of this IT-based infrastructure is often considered as the most critical and yet the most complex part of managerial decision-making. Many managers do not try to justify their expenditure or measure whether their money was well spent. This situation has become unacceptable in the light of the rising costs and uncertain benefits of this increasingly important type of business investment. The call for more financial returns and more 'value for money' can no longer be ignored. Making the right investment evaluations will make the vital difference between business success and failure. This book provides a unique perspective on assessing and creating business value from investments in IT-based infrastructure and, more importantly, it shows how the role of IT-based infrastructure is critical to obtain the full benefits of IT. Contributions from Science Education Research ReviewThank you for an excellent transaction when I bought the book, "Contributions from Science Education Research," by Pinto.Contributions from Science Education Research OverviewIn August 2005, over 500 researchers from the field of science education met at the 5th European Science Education Research Association conference. Two of the main topics at this conference were: the decrease in the number of students interested in school science and concern about the worldwide outcomes of studies on students' scientific literacy. This volume includes edited versions of 37 outstanding papers presented, including the lectures of the keynote speakers.

Human Factors in Air Traffic Control ReviewI'm merely an air traffic control student, but i've had this book assigned by a professor and it's my assesment that it is intended more for the benefit of air traffic management systems engineers than for those looking to gain a basic working knowledge of current systems and how people use them. I suspect that she picked it because of title, and becuase Flight to the Future: Human Factors in Air Traffic Control is apparently out of print. I find it very dry and overly-technical for my needs.Human Factors in Air Traffic Control OverviewThe study of human factors has progressed greatly in the past 10 years, particularly with regard to the literature available in applied areas. The authors of this text focus on the most important aspects of this literature--the increasing concern over the deregulation of airlines and the increase in aviation accidents. The book covers general system safety, human perception, information processing, and cognitive load capacity during air traffic control performance, as well as team coordination, selection and training of personnel, work station and software design, and communication issues.

American Women Writers and the Nazis: Ethics and Politics in Boyle,Porter,Stafford, and Hellman ReviewIt's not just that Thomas Austenfeld expands our understanding of American literature by grouping together for the very first time four remarkable women writers. Nor is it simply that in discussing the respective experiences of Katherine Anne Porter, Kay Boyle, Jean Stafford, and Lillian Hellman in Nazi Germany he creates a more comprehensive picture of the American expatriate experience. Ultimately what makes this intelligent and sprightly volume so enjoyable and worthwhile is the way in which Austenfeld writes a completely new chapter of American literary history in a manner that is informed, judicious, wise, and imminently readable.American Women Writers and the Nazis: Ethics and Politics in Boyle,Porter,Stafford, and Hellman OverviewAs expatriates in Germany and Austria in the 1930s, Kay Boyle,Katherine Anne Porter, Jean Stafford, and Lillian Hellman saw the rise of Naziideology firsthand. And while all four clearly realized -- as their workdemonstrates -- that ethical behavior is the personal corollary of politicalconviction, scholars of these important American writers have long neglected thesignificance of the mingling of writing, ethics, and politics in theirwork. In American Women Writers Thomas Austenfeldrestores ethics and politics to the central places they held in the lives and workof these four women. By documenting the political and ethical apprenticeships eachwoman served in Germany and Austria, Austenfeld convincingly argues that the geniusof these writers exists precisely in their ability to continue the development oftheir best creative sensibilities -- in spite of and indeed because of the ethicalchallenges they faced as women writers in the tense prewarworld. KayBoyle's analysis of the language and cultural expression of occupation, LillianHellman's exposure of diplomatic language as furthering war, Katherine Anne Porter'simplicit critique of Weimar Germany's class consciousness, and Jean Stafford'ssearching meditations on guilt and responsibility all argue afresh for the pragmaticgoals that fiction and drama can serve in a politically unstableworld.

Challenges of Information Technology Education in the 21st Century ReviewChallenges of Information Technology Education in the 21st Century (2002), edited by Prof. Eli Cohen of the Leon Kozminski Academy of Entrepeneurship & Management (Poland) and the Informing Science Institute (USA)is an invaluable resource for Information Science teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels. But its interest goes well beyond this fairly restricted audience, as it contains guidelines for class action, models of teaching and for research, and very practical advice on curricular development that can be used successfully in all disciplines (including the humanities). It offers both a rationale for curricular format and content changes (justified by what Prof. Eli calls a "revolution" in IT education) and an analogue to the demands associated to future careers in college and in industry. Furthermore, by the end of the book, any careful reader will be much surprised at how much he/she has learned about institutional history, group dynamics, sociology and psychology of groups, the relations between IT and science, technology, and policy, as well as the connections between university, industry, and management.
The book is divided into four interconnected sections (Section I: Examples on How to Teach Specific Topics; Section II: Teaching Techniques and Pedagogy; Section III: Impact of the Web on IT Teaching; and Section IV: Developing an IT Curriculum). Together they represent a heterogeneous variety of 13 articles by Information Science experts from countries such as China, New Zealand, Australia, and the USA. The worldview present in all chapters takes into consideration that the population of teachers and students is not disembodied from institutional contexts. Taking into account that teachers perceive teaching and learning differently from students, the diversity of their cultural and racial backgrounds, the need to practice from real case studies, and the contrasting methods required by distance learning as opposed to classroom learning further reinforce the embededness of the process. The philosophy of education present in the chapters emphasizes the importance of teamwork in problem solving, the need to train students for flexibility in adjusting quickly to ever changing conditions typical of business applications, a sensitivity to the demands of industry as well as those of academia (and of their ever fluid relationships), and a "deep approach" to learning about IT. This model of learning and teaching is incompatible with more traditonal and passive teaching methods that have proved to be too weak to replicate the dynamic nature of real working situations in industry and that leave employers dissatisfied with the low level of preparedness and independent thinking on the part of their newly graduated employees. The "deep approach" involves reliance on groups, delegating tasks to qualified individuals or teams, brain-storming, discussing best solutions on the fly and with little guidance from management. It encourages the view that students construct knowledge in their minds rather than that they should expect information to be offered to them in its entirety by all-knowing teachers.
The contributors of Challenges of Information Technology in the 21st Century have made their homework. All chapters include detailed literature reviews of the field of expertise that their authors are complementing and/or superseding. All start with clear summaries that the reader can use for quick browsing, and end with concluding remarks and useful and updated bibliography lists. They also offer definitions, practical (and experimented in the field) perspectives, modules, tables, ideas for syllabi, tools for self-assessment, and many other guidelines for successful IT teaching and learning on an international scale. Although the vocabulary of IT is quite technical, the articles are easily intelligible to non-experts. I can see this book becoming a required reading for IT and business students, as well as for future college teachers. The book opens new horizons to interested parties and is, as typical of Prof. Eli's other work in the field of IT, incredibly honest every step of the way. I highly recommend it.Challenges of Information Technology Education in the 21st Century OverviewWhen teaching in the area of Information Technology, it is necessary to constantly update curriculum, to deal with new challenges brought forth by students, and to modify teaching methods to accommodate these new situations. Challenges of Information Technology Education in the 21st Century strives to address a variety of pertinent questions surrounding the rapidly changing area of IT education, such as: What topics are important for the 21st Century? How does the Internet change the task of teaching? What is the role of the professor in a world of online learning? This exciting new book will be an invaluable resource for educators in the field of information technology.
