Origins and Revolutions: Human Identity in Earliest Prehistory ReviewI got much more than I expected. Gamble works in archaeology but takes some of the latest ideas to bring the subject to today's cutting edge. He attempts three basic efforts roughly paralleling the three sections of the book. He first demolishes the easy storylines of what has passed as prehistoric "revolutions" such as the Neolithic as being pretty much along the lines of magic bullet theories where first we had X (fill in the blank: big brains, language, agriculture, etc.) and then we had significant jumps to people who looked surprisingly close to ... us. The historical connections within European archaeology to various ideologies and cultural preconceptions don't get neglected in his critique.
Then he turns in the second section to his serious rebuilding of archaeology by emphasizing the need to bring the people back into the artefacts. And for this he turns very productively to material culture studies and many of the thinkers who are testing the waters of material agency. Sometimes his language can seem a little convoluted, but the ideas are rich, well illustrated, given many examples from many excavations throughout prehistory, and convincing. Just listing his ideas for how people used objects and tools gives a feel for the way he brings artefacts into people-using forms: sets and nets, enchainment and accumulation, containers and instruments, consuming and fragmenting, additive and reductive technologies, planning depth and tactical depth and curation (maintaining technology over time), and childscape within habitscape. His use of the studies of others who have recreated individual archaeological sites for the manufacture of blades and flakes in the use of flint to apply these concepts brings life to the imagined activities uncovered in these studies. The ample examples, photos, and drawings greatly reduce the tedium of the sometimes heavy theory.
In the last section he then takes his new concepts and applies them to give a different sense of the gradual movement of prehistory. Here, the richness of the extant archaeological studies tumbles out as he brings his new concepts into simpler view. This part was the easiest and most rewarding to read. He is probing how to rebuild the contours of prehistory without the facile origins and revolutions that have defined it sometimes in the past.
What is best about the book for those of us who are not archaeologists is the exploration of material agency and the social-action dimensions of objects. What was oddly missing from the book were connections to biology and evolution, especially cultural evolution. Presumably, he left this out to keep the focus from becoming too wide, but the issues he raises beg to be integrated with cultural evolutionary theory and other fields such as cognitive science. What he does give us, thankfully, is a deep overview of the field of prehistoric studies and a promising set of tools to explore material agency, which is tenaciously taking hold within material culture studies and which is philosophically radical.Origins and Revolutions: Human Identity in Earliest Prehistory OverviewIn this innovative study Clive Gamble presents and questions two of the most famous descriptions of change in prehistory. The first is the 'human revolution', when evidence for art, music, religion and language first appears. The second is the economic and social revolution of the Neolithic period. Gamble identifies the historical agendas behind 'origins research' and presents a bold new alternative to these established frameworks, relating the study of change to the material basis of human identity. He examines, through artefact proxies, how changing identities can be understood using embodied material metaphors and in two major case-studies charts the prehistory of innovations, asking, did agriculture really change the social world? This is an important and challenging book that will be essential reading for every student and scholar of prehistory.

Management Information Systems for the Information Age ReviewI have used (and continue to use) this text for a college class on MIS. It's among the best textbooks I've ever come across. The book is filled with real world stories of real companies and how they have improved their competitive positions using IT. It also contains numerous 15-25 minute group activities and "On Your Own" assignments. Each chapter ends with a list of Key Terms, as well as several short answer and discussion questions.
Finally, and what I like most about the text, is a section on "Real HOT Group Projects." Many of these require creation of database reports or spread sheet pivot tables. So, you may find yourself diverting some time to teaching spreadsheet and database skills. But how can you teach the application of technology to managing and creating information, without actually using technology to do just that?Management Information Systems for the Information Age OverviewChapters of this title cover what instructors want students to know about MIS while Extended Learning Modules (XLMs) show students what they can do with MIS. A contemporary writing style and a wealth of examples engage students. Arranged with chapter opening cases that highlight how an organization has successfully implemented many of the chapter's concepts and chapter closing cases that help students apply what they just learned gives students the hands-on knowledge that is applicable in both their personal and professional experiences.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The African American Child: Development and Challenges Review"Harris and Graham review available research about African American children in the areas of health, the family, education, language and literacy, and moral and social development, and also indicate some limitations of these inquiries. They provide a model of appropriate research design, examining general problems of research, before turning their attention to the specifics of African American children. As a context for their broader discussion of development, they present various psychological theories and note how these have or have not addressed the needs of black children. Subsequent chapters provide overviews/discussions of particular issues and summaries with appropriate bibliographic references. Although African American children have been discussed in numerous educational and sociological books, the focus has usually been on the problematic nature of the children's experience--i.e., on deficits rather than differences. This book argues convincingly that children's cultural differences need to be recognized for any accurate understanding of their development. Pointing out the need for additional and more effectively designed research, Harris and Graham provide a valuable foundation for further investigations. This nonpolemic book should be in all libraries, filling an unfortunate gap. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals."
-- 11/07 issue of CHOICE. (CHOICE is a monthly magazine targeted primarily to librarians. Their short reviews are one of the most important collection development tools.)
"This excellent book...should be required reading for individuals working with African American children and their families ( and students who will be)."
--Doody's Review Service
From the book cover:
"This book does a wonderful job of providing a comprehensive, up-to-date portrayal of research, thinking, and issues related to the African American child. The books special contribution is to cover what specifically is known about the African American child on a wide range of topics in the field of child development (from various social contexts to language and literacy). I know of no other book that does this so effectively."
--John W. Santrock, PhD, Professor of Psychology, University of Texas at Dallas
"This carefully researched, clearly written, highly current text offers for the first time a holistic view of the development and life conditions of African-American children. Among its exemplary features are a rich picture of African-American childrens past and contemporary experiences and many highly informative, well-reasoned discussions of pressing social issues relevant to African-American childrens adjustment - including school desegregation, racial identity, black language dialects, community violence, and health care. The African American Child is an invaluable resource for scholars, policy makers, educators, and students of culture and child development. Bravo to the authors for greatly clarifying the steps that we - as individuals, as communities, and as a society - must take to promote African-American children's well-being."
--Laura E. Berk, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Illinois State University
The African American Child: Development and Challenges Overview"This nonpolemic book should be in all libraries. Highly recommended."-- Choice
This textbook introduces students to the socioeconomic, educational, and health-related issues impacting the lives of African American children, but have been typically ignored in mainstream textbooks. The book is designed to be student friendly, as each chapter presents an "Insider's Voice," a narrative about the issues discussed. The chapters feature dialogues of current biological, environmental, and cultural theories, as well as suggestions for additional videos and websites to guide critical thinking.

History, Culture, and Religion of the Hellenistic Age ReviewHelmut Koester's History, Culture and Religion of the Hellenistic Age is Volume One to his Introduction to the New Testament. It is intended to provide an introduction, but the reader will come away with much more than that. This review covers only the first volume.
Koester covers a wide range of topics pertaining to the ancient world including political, religious, intellectual, and technological histories and seems to demonstrate thorough knowledge of each. His intention is to provide a linear transition between Old and New Testaments and place the entire Bible into its proper historical context. Many religious groups including the Maccabees, Pharisees, and Samaritans are placed in perspective to the greater world in which the interacted. The reader will fully understand what the political and intellectual world was like during the time Christianity was being established.
Koester's unique way of identifying chapters and subparts makes for quick and easy internal cross reference, though his alpha-numeric style is similar to a government regulation or corporate standard operating procedure.
Though his knowledge of his subject matter is unquestionable, Koester does demonstrate several weaknesses that readers must accommodate. He has a strong pro-Hellenistic bias, particularly evident in Chapter 3 when he claims Galen's books are "the last truly great medical works from the ancient times" or how the "Roman period and beyond" were a "decline of scholarship and science." Koester's work is occasionally detailed to the point of tediousness. His chapters on the many religious cults and philosophies do not appear to be written for the casual reader. The level of detail demonstrates his knowledge but come across as somewhat confusing. He also dwells exclusively in the world of political and intellectual leaders, the common people are not described in any convincing detail. This is peculiar because the focus of the Bible, particularly the New Testament is upon the ordinary people who often get caught up in the intrigues and realities of the Roman world.
A final weakness is in his presentation style. He provides no notes to any sources throughout the book. He lists bibliographies for each chapter, but does not differentiate between his work and that of others.
Yet this is still a valuable book that can teach much of the world of the New Testament. Christianity and the New Testament did not evolve in a vacuum, and Koester does much to help the reader fully appreciate what the world in which they did emerge in was like.History, Culture, and Religion of the Hellenistic Age OverviewAmong the striking features that distinguish thiscomprehensive two-volume work, now complete in its second edition, from other books of similar title are its wide historical scope, itstreatment of early Christian literature in the chronological sequence, and the inclusion of over sixty noncanonical Christian documents.Volume 2, after considering problems related to the interpretationof early Christian writings - transmission, canon, text, formcriticism, literary criticism, and narrative and rhetorical criticism- unfolds the story of the early Christian communities and theirliterature from John the Baptist and Jesus to Justin Martyr,Valentinus, and Polycarp. This narrative has been written in areadable, nontechnical style, supplemented by current bibliographiesfor each selection that include listings of the best editions oforiginal texts as well as the most accessible English translations. Anessential work for students, teachers, and clergy, this set will alsoappeal to the educated layperson looking for a scholarly treatment ofthe New Testament and its background in the world of Jewish andGreco-Roman antiquity.

Practical Aural Habilitation: For Speech-Language Pathologists and Educators of Hearing-Impaired Children ReviewI am a speech-language pathology student. I discovered this book while preparing a presentation on the topic of auditory stimuli in aural rehabilitation. I would highly recommend it to anyone who works with hearing-impaired children, and it is especially good for students and clinicians who work in the schools. It clearly explains how to interpet an audiogram and use it for planning therapy. Best of all, there are many case studies of how the information can be applied to specific children. It includes many therapy tasks and ideas for incorporating auditory-verbal exercises into whole language therapy.Though not apparent from the title, it is directed toward the auditory-verbal school of thought, so would not be appropriate for therapy using manual language approaches. It would also be a good resource for parents of hearing-impaired infants for activities that they could do at home, and for better understanding of their child's impairment. It is well-organized and easy to read. I highly recommend this book.Practical Aural Habilitation: For Speech-Language Pathologists and Educators of Hearing-Impaired Children Overview

Network Processors : Architectures, Protocols and Platforms (Telecom Engineering) ReviewI read 'Network Processors' to learn more about this relatively new technology that is changing the way network security appliances are designed and deployed. Panos Lekkas' work seemed like the only book available that presented a broad, multi-vendor sweep of the network processor landscape. While the book has plenty of information to offer, I found it did not really live up to my expectations.
Network processors are specialized computing chips built for high performance packet processing applications. I hoped 'Network Processors' would spend a good amount of time making the case for this technology, explaining why NPs are indispensable compared to general purpose CPUs. Unfortunately, I felt the book did not make a compelling case. Chapter 2, titled 'Network Processors: Justification,' is only 10 pages, with a single chart graphing bandwidth demand vs time. I would have liked to see head-to-head comparisons of NPs against CPUs for various network applications. The book spends a lot of time discussing technologies and concepts at the periphery of NPs; I think some of that space could have been put to better use.
Here is an example of why I felt let down by this book. In the preface, the author seems to assure the reader that he will answer questions others tend to ignore. On p. xix the author writes 'In numerous industry discussions, I have encountered experienced software engineers who have implemented cutting-edge protocols, but have no idea what concepts such as scheduling, backpressure, switching fabrics, and classification mean.' To be fair, the author does explain switching fabrics and classification. However, he says almost nothing about backpressure, and he certainly never explicitly defines it; the only mention is on p. 274.
Elsewhere, I thought the book was unnecessarily confusing. It's fine to cover deep technical details, but it helps to start with clear general definitions and progress to more difficult material. The following excerpt from p. 220, the second page of chapter 12, serves as part of the 'introduction' to content addressable memory: 'The principle of associative memory is based on the inverse mechanism of establishing a relationship between the input and a specific piece of information stored in the memory array.' This sentence is fine if the reader knows what 'associative memory' is, understands the 'inverse mechanism,' and can relate to 'the input' and a 'memory array.'
The layout of the book itself may have contributed to my difficulty with it. The font is one of the smallest I have ever encountered. The footnotes are so small as to be almost illegible. I like the hardcover binding, though.
Although not the author's fault, readers should be aware that many of the companies and some of the technologies in 'Network Processors' have disappeared. Each time I encountered a new company or product I checked to see if their Web page or product line still existed. For example, IBM's PowerNP receives an entire chapter; it was sold to Hifn in January 2004. In many cases, however, surviving vendors have not brought too many products to market since the book's late 2002 publication date.
I believe a second edition of 'Network Processors' would benefit from an editor who challenges the author to be more organized and generous with his audience. The book was built on a good idea -- bringing knowledge of NPs to general readers. A second edition should ensure that goal is met, since we do need to know more about this promising technology.Network Processors : Architectures, Protocols and Platforms (Telecom Engineering) OverviewNetwork processing units (NPUs) will be the occasion of sweeping changes in the network hardware industry over the next few years. This new breed of microchip impacts chip designers like Intel, equipment vendors like Cisco, application developers like IBM and Morotola, and an army of software engineers who spent the last decade working on protocols and network management solutions. A thoroughly practical dissection of the early NPU market, this designer's guide explains how network processors work and provides detailed information on all major commercial architectures, from features to design considerations. Comparative tables are a rich source of cross-industry info. Coverage includes traffic managers, classification chips, content-addressable memories, switch fabrics, security accelerators, storage coprocessors and NetASICs.

A Message of Ancient Days ReviewI have used Houghton-Miffin Social Studies books in my Home School for two years now and I would highly recommend them because they are really well written. They bring History to life, they are colorful, down-to-earth, easy to understand and include time-lines. The lessons are easily divided up for you with headers of Lesson 1 (etc)--even without the teacher's edition and make studying and learning fun, easy, and exciting. These books really get you involved with the way things were and how and why they relate to you today.
Include in each chapter are focus points, key terms, lots of illustrations with full explanations, charts, colorful-detailed maps, and "Sliced view" of objects to see inside of things (like houses, buildings, etc). Though, I believe that you can sometimes find "workbooks" to go along with these books, I found them unnecessary as there are lots of activities included at the end of each lesson in the Review section, including: Focus questions, Connect questions, Citizenship, Critical thinking, and Writing Activities. Also along the side of the text are included Questions to provoke thought as you read the text, which are great discussion starters.
Also included in the chapters are sections for discussions and decisions which can be used for further research and reports. Finally Chapter Reviews make excellent "Tests" or "Quizzes" with a lot of open end and essay questions.
I am using these Houghton-Miffin Social Studies books again this year for teaching 6th grade (Ancient Days of world history) and already have my books for next year (World History Medieval Days).
My student is excited about history with these books and looks forward to our lessons--If they're fun and exciting, then they aren't just another subject he HAS to do, it's a subject he WANTS to do! How much better can you get than that?

Vowels and Consonants ReviewPeter Ladefoged has recently revised his two fine introductory texts, "Elements of Acoustic Phonetics" and "A Course in Phonetics" and, in 1996, published an advanced text on phonology "The Sounds of the World's Languages" with Ian Maddieson, his collaborator phonologist in their first-hand, on-site studies of African languages and many others. His new book brings acoustic phonetics and phonology together in a brilliantly designed course, complete with a CD-ROM containing many important and interesting examples and demonstrations. After such a fine introduction, the student is ready to study phonology and/or phonetics more intensively and become a professional. The generous number of figures and tables are well chosen; the coverage of technical techniques and their applications for research are broadly representative of speech science and technology. This is one book that lives up to the glowing remarks of colleagues on the back cover. My own more-advanced book, "The Acoustics of Speech Communicatiion" will work better, especially for linguistics students, if they have used "Vowels and Consonants" for their first course.Vowels and Consonants OverviewThis popular and accessible introduction to phonetics is now available in a fully updated second edition. Peter Ladefoged describes how languages use a variety of different sounds, many of them quite unlike any that occur in well-known languages.Important topics covered in Vowels and Consonants include:* The main forces operating on the sounds of languages* The acoustic components of speech and speech synthesis* Computers and Text-To-Speech systems and speech recognition systems* Descriptions of the sounds of a wide variety of languages that are reproduced on the accompanying CD.This revised edition includes a new chapter on how we listen to speech and the greatly expanded CD now contains data on 100 languages to reinforce learning and bring the descriptions to life.

Cognitive Psychology ReviewI find this book to be terribly frustrating. I have only read a few chapters in this book (a great deal of that material several times) and concepts that this book introduces are just not clear. the abnormal psychology book that Sue Sue and Sue wrote is phenomenal, every key concept is clearly defined, and it is immediately discussed and then supplemented with examples and extra information. With this Cognitive Psychology book I feel like every important concept is shrouded in fog. There are far too many examples and few terms are defined immediately and with accuracy. With this said, I would suggest this book for people that would like to supplement their reading, due to the massive amounts of examples in this book. For some, this book may be perfect, I just prefer a more direct approach that other psychology books offer.Cognitive Psychology OverviewThis coherent overview of cognitive psychology is organized in terms of themes that cut across topic areas. Written by well-known researchers, the book is completely current in describing ongoing controversies in research; it provides summaries of key experiments that distinguish between them; and it encourages the reader to think critically about current research and theories. The focus on the importance of physical and computational constraints on cognition is preserved throughout the book.

Living Issues in Philosophy, Ninth Edition ReviewAs a new student of philosophy, I must admit that I was assigned this title as a text in class. Though, as text books go, it is suprisingly thin (450 pages), it is packed with definitions, explanation, comparisons, and reflections. I found it easy to read, and most enjoyed the separate introductions (with quotes) of nearly all leading philosophers throughout history. Also very helpful, the suggested readings (at the end of every chapter) allow you to immediately find sources of greater substance on very specific subjects. The authors even included brief descriptions of each book, to further narrow your search. I would have to rate it as the best textbook yet, on a difficult subject to introduce in a cohesive manner! I will be reading other texts by these authors - without being assigned to them!Living Issues in Philosophy, Ninth Edition OverviewUsed by more than one million students around the world since its original publication, this introductory philosophy text makes accessible a wide range of philosophical issues closely related to everyday life. Emphasizing personal and immediate questions, the authors approach introductory philosophy through basic human questions rather than focusing on methodology or the history of thought. The text presents vital questions of contemporary interest in an overall framework of enduring concepts, interweaving coverage of various topics in art, history, and education. It covers a variety of types of philosophy in depth, and both western and eastern perspectives are represented. Ideal for students who have no background in philosophy, Living Issues in Philosophy, 9/e simplifies technical language wherever possible; unfamiliar terms are clearly defined upon first appearance and in the end-of-chapter glossaries. Additional pedagogical features include exercises, chapter summaries, and annotated bibliographies at the end of every chapter. The text also features photo biographies of major philosophers and short excerpts from philosophical classics.

Software Engineering: (Update) (8th Edition) ReviewI used this book as the text in my software engineering class in the spring semester of 2008. When I was evaluating it for potential adoption, I did not read through it in detail, I looked over the chapter titles and subtitles, read the first few chapters and examined the exercises at the end of the first few chapters. As the semester progressed, I found myself wishing I had read further into the text.
As I moved through the chapters, I found myself mentally noting over and over again that topics are repeated. When the class was over, I asked the students their opinion of the book and they were unanimous, with no prompting from me, in saying that there is a great deal of repetition after the first chapters.
I have no complaint about the quality of exposition or the coverage of software engineering in this book. My reason for not continuing to use it in future classes is solely due to my belief that the size could have been reduced from the current 840 pages to around 600 pages with no real loss of content of flow.
Software Engineering: (Update) (8th Edition) OverviewTHE most current Software Engineering text in the market– quality trusted coverage, practical case studies, strong lecturer support.

Introduction to Psychology: Gateways to Mind and Behavior with Concept Maps and Reviews ReviewFirst, I'd like to point out that I am eighteen years old and just finished my first year of college, so I'm coming from a relatively young point of view with an opinion on technique - not content, as I am no professional. Also, I read quite a bit, both leisurely and academically. However, the ability to read well or with ease does not guarantee complete engrossment or heed about the text and/or subject. That is, I'm like a lot of people my age when it comes to most textbooks - I find them utterly boring, where reading becomes more of a chore than a pleasure. And that's fair; textbooks aren't exactly meant for amusement. Still, not everyone is a scholar, and seeing how reading is an absolute, there should be some middle ground between dull professionalism and light entertainment.
Anyway. I was assigned this book for my Introduction to Psychology class, and though I had an amazing professor, this book itself was just as engaging and just as clever. Authors Dennis Coon and John O. Mitterer do an excellent job presenting the material both clearly and interestingly. You can tell they love psychology and put a lot of effort into relating to the common person. They show much consideration for their audience, catering to those who don't want another lackluster assignment, but something more stimulating. At least, that's what I believe. It definitely made the studying/homework portion of my college experience much more bearable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to those interested in psychology or looking to take a class in it, especially if they find it difficult keeping interest in a book and/or schoolwork.Introduction to Psychology: Gateways to Mind and Behavior with Concept Maps and Reviews OverviewCo-written by an author who garners more accolades and rave reviews from instructors and students with each succeeding edition, INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY: GATEWAYS TO MIND AND BEHAVIOR, TWELFTH EDITION attracts and holds the attention of even difficult-to-reach students. The Twelfth Edition's hallmark continues to be its pioneering integration of the proven-effective SQ4R learning system (Survey, Question, Read, Reflect, Review, Recite), which promotes critical thinking as it guides students step-by-step to an understanding of psychology's broad concepts and diversity of topics. Throughout every chapter, these active learning tools--together with the book's example-laced writing style, discussions of positive psychology, cutting-edge coverage of the field's new research findings, and excellent media resources--ensure that users find the study of psychology fascinating, relevant, and above all, accessible.

Contemporary Nursing Knowledge: Analysis and Evaluation of Nursing Models and Theories ReviewUnfortunately I cannot change my star rating if I could it would be a 4. My initial review was done at the beginning of my Nursing Theory class in my MSN program when I should have waited.
Of all the nursing theory books available for purchase on Amazon this is the best textbook to have whether it is a requirement for a class or you just need something to supplement your current course materials. This is the one textbook I definitely plan to keep updated as new editions are published because when it comes to nursing theory this book has it all without alot of fluff.
At the beginning of each chapter the author provides a list of key terms and concepts. Sometimes you can find this information within the chapter however the author is not consistent with this throughout the textbook.
The only drawback to this book is that it does not include a glossary that defines some of the terms and concepts used throughout the textbook.
A glossary with definitions of terms and or concepts would be extremely helpful for a beginning graduate student who has been out of school for more than 3-5 years.
Another plus is that this is a hardback book with a reasonable price. Probably 98% of the books I look at on Amazon are paperback and with as much as textbooks cost whether it is on Amazon or the college bookstore I personally like hardcover books because they last longer.Contemporary Nursing Knowledge: Analysis and Evaluation of Nursing Models and Theories OverviewWhat do nurses do? What is nursing? How do you define it? This updated text provides conceptual models and theories to use as guidelines in answering those burning questions for future nurse educators, nurse researchers, nurse administrators, and/or practicing nurses. Included in the text is the most current bibliography of published literature on conceptual models and theories - with yearly updates available on the web.

Operating System Concepts ReviewThis provides a solid introduction to the basics of operating system (OS) internals. After an introductory section, this covers the major subsystems in an orderly progression: processes, memory, storage, protection, distributed systems, and special purpose systems. Although I might quibble with some of the ordering, (e.g., virtual memory vis a vis process management), this gives a firm foundation for anyone teaching introductory OS internals. As an aside, instructors should also be aware of the additional support they'll find at the book's web site.
I have no real objections to this book, but find that some of its emphasis won't suit all readers. For example, 99% of all processors don't run Windows or Linux. Instead, they run your DVD player, car air bags, microwave, digital watch, and just about everything else with a power cord or battery. Engineering students headed for embedded system development will need supplementary material. Also, like every other undergrad text I know, this underplays the critical importance of standards in everything from APIs and file system structures to network protocols and safe coding guideline.
I've taught from this book and from Tanenbaum and, to tell the truth, have no strong preference between the two. They present comparable material at roughly the same level, both offer good case studies, and both offer on-line support to students and instructors. Each outweighs the other on specific topics but, on the whole, that seems to balance out. I note that some reviewers object to this book's level. To them, I can only say: that's life. OS development is at least ten times as hard as developing mainstream applications (as measured by programmers' output of debugged code), so it will require some programming knowledge to follow discussions of OS internals. Railing against obviously important prerequisites says more about the speaker than about the book.

Principles of Information Systems ReviewOne of the book's biggest problems is that it rambles. The book has 14 multi-topic-chapters. This could be solved with going to 20 or 24 focused chapters. Part of the problem is the book's target audience - accounting, business or management majors that should know what IT can do for them. I have over 25 years in business and over 10 years in IT, dealing with Fortune 100 companies to mom and pop shops. When I read this book, I get they impression they talked to one person or one company and they take that as industry standards. Oops these generalizations miss the mark. If they talk to only one company they should say so- this is the way XYZ does this. If you have a 42 page chapter called "Database Systems and Business Intelligence" the business intelligence (BI) section should be longer than a 1/2 page. I have thought this book wouldn't be a good value at half the price.Principles of Information Systems OverviewIntended for the Introduction to MIS course. It is the first course for an MIS major and is often required for business students. The approximate enrollments are over 100,000 units per academic year.

Psychology in Action ReviewI thought this book was well written in a way that anyone could understand, but also challenged students to think critically and to not accept everything at face value, but to investigate and make their own opinions.Psychology in Action OverviewThe perfectly choreographed learning experience! As a full-time teacher of psychology, Karen Huffman knows that covering all the major concepts and theories, while still presenting the exciting and practical applications of psychology, is a challenge. To meet it, you need a fully integrated text and supplements package that sets the stage for a perfectly choreographed learning experience.

Operating System Concepts, Seventh Edition ReviewDefinetely targeted towards the sophomore/Junior level students. This book goes into generic concepts used by most operating systems - i.e., what happens when a program is loaded into memory? How do processes make system calls to the kernel, how is deadlock among several programs competing for the same resources resolved, what is the characteristics of real-time operating systems etc.
I have adopted this book for teaching the operating systems course. I find that students, in general, appreciate this book as it is very readable. I believe a good text book should have the following qualities: It should be light enough to read it in bed, the fonts should be large enough to not give a headache after an hour of reading, should be written in clear lucid style with plenty of figures and should have decent binding. I believe this book qualifies in all those aspects.
However, I do have one unpleasant comment. I hate it when authors keep coming out with new editions with just small delta changes - forcing students to buy high priced editions because some professors could care less about the cost of books to students (after all, we profs get them for free). The 7th edition is not a whole lot different than the 6th edition (about 2 or 3 new chapters included in the 7th edition). Considering that you can buy a used 6th edition for half the price of a new 7th edition, I recommended my students to go with the 6th edition instead and chose to just teach them some of the additional materials from the 7th edition.
What I would have liked to see in this book - greater detail (perhaps with some psuedocode) on the workings of the kernel and how programs can take advantage of it (I guess I am thinking along the lines of Steven's UNIX programming book).Operating System Concepts, Seventh Edition OverviewAnother defining moment in the evolution of operating systemsSmall footprint operating systems, such as those driving the handheld devices that the baby dinosaurs are using on the cover, are just one of the cutting-edge applications you'll find in Silberschatz, Galvin, and Gagne's Operating System Concepts, Seventh Edition.By staying current, remaining relevant, and adapting to emerging course needs, this market-leading text has continued to define the operating systems course. This Seventh Edition not only presents the latest and most relevant systems, it also digs deeper to uncover those fundamental concepts that have remained constant throughout the evolution of today's operation systems. With this strong conceptual foundation in place, students can more easily understand the details related to specific systems.New Adaptations* Increased coverage of user perspective in Chapter 1.* Increased coverage of OS design throughout.* A new chapter on real-time and embedded systems (Chapter 19).* A new chapter on multimedia (Chapter 20).* Additional coverage of security and protection.* Additional coverage of distributed programming.* New exercises at the end of each chapter.* New programming exercises and projects at the end of each chapter.* New student-focused pedagogy and a new two-color design to enhance the learning process.
