Digital Integrated Circuit Design: From VLSI Architectures to CMOS Fabrication ReviewThis book gives a top-down approach of designing latest digital integrated circuits by covering all topics of integrated digital circuit design within over 800 pages.
I can recommend this book for people who already have basic knowledge of IC design and want to get a closer look over the whole topic and problems that arise in present technologies and research.
The author starts from the top level of system integration down to the CMOS devices, physics and their problems for designing circuits. He also provides information to semiconductor business and workflow of the industry as well as functionality of EDA tools.
Each Chapters starts with a few words on the current contexts and ends with several short problems for self studying and an appendix with more information leading to even more resources.
The knowledge is enhanced by definitions and many very helpful observations. Theories often contain real life examples and also some guidelines for designers, in addition many examples with data values from present devices from famous manufacturers are given.
In contrast to usual books, the author starts with architectures and techniques, like pipelining, replication and time sharing for implementing algorithms.
Next he explains hardware description languages on the example of VHDL, yet the focus of this chapter is not the syntax of VHDL but processing of VHDL and its impact on the design. Also there are some examples for the major circuits and guidelines that are used within a design.
This is followed by timing and clocking techniques for digital circuits. Here synchronous and asynchronous disciplines and characterizations of all different types of phase and edge triggered clocks in a design are described. This part also faces all problems of asynchronous data handling, and how to circumvent its drawbacks. All explanations are illustrated with helpful timing diagrams and figures of common circuit configurations.
Finally, it starts to get into gate and transistor level design. Basics of CMOS behavior and logic gates are illustrated, extended by considerations on energy dissipation, supply voltage drop and noise on a die, physical models for the design and electrical characteristics. Verification techniques of functionality and design are explained along with the design flow of EDA tools.
A very nice and rather exotic part of the book is the chapter "VLSI Economics and Project Management". There is all kind of workflows, cost models and market sides discussed and displayed in an overview.
The book is completed by a chapter on semiconductor physics, functionality of CMOS devices and outlooks to the CMOS Technology of tomorrow.
As a solely negative point remains: there are too many topics. Many problems are shown and explained, but don't have a detailed solution. The author countervails this situation by giving good references to work on further and support material at the publishers homepage.

Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice ReviewI am a practicing civil engineer (worked in both private and government practice) and Hansen and Zenobia's book is indeed a good reference for things practicing engineers typically learn after about 5 years on the job. Many engineering students (can) tend to focus on the technical aspect of engineering - absolutely necessary. But, something that is generally not taught (well) in school, or for which there are select references, are described well in this book. Hansen and Zenobia have done the research work for you - instead of learning the hard way on the job only, why not take the first step to learning things now? You would definitely be a step ahead of other entry level candidates. A must have in this difficult economy.
I am a practicing engineer for 13 years now, and such things as Ethics (chapter 3), Deliverables (chapter 6), Permitting (Chapter 8), legal (Chapter 11) and Communicating (Chapter 13) are apropos for today's multi-faceted and multi-tasking practicing engineers. No one tells you in school what a deliverable is, and that just because you can technically do something, doesn't mean you can legally. And communication - if you can't write or speak your ideas clearly - well, then learn. Those have been by far the most valuable skills I learned early (some in school, some just learned socially), and that have gotten me places in my career. May other things I learned via the "school of hard knocks" which can be career forming (in a bad way), and if you can avoid such knocks by having some understanding of engineering practice, you'd be better off for it. A book worth having on any engineering student / entry level professional's library.
This book was written by engineers for engineers - institutional knowledge on paper!

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536): Microsoft® .NET Framework Application Development Foundation, Second edition ReviewOverall, if you're considering taking the 70-536 exam, I recommend getting this book (not that there are a lot of alternatives). It may contain a few errors (honestly, I don't recall anything significant, right off hand), but the 2nd edition definitely alleviates at least most of the scores of pages of errors found in the first edition. Don't get the cheaper old edition: it's worth it to pay for the updated version, if only to avoid having to go through the 50+ pages of errata with the first edition.
This book does not cover everything in the same depth as the test, so if this is your only study tool, don't expect to feel completely comfortable when taking the exam or expect to "ace" it. As other posters have stated, you will need to do some of your own research if getting every question right is your goal. However, using ONLY this book as a study tool you CAN pass. Passing was my goal, and to that effect, this book accomplished its purpose effectively.
The tests provided on the CD did not seem much easier than the questions on the exam. Others may have had a different experience, but that was mine. I did notice that I "memorized" the answers rather quickly, and am glad I saved the tests on the CD until after I had already worked through the book, and could still use them to help polish my knowledge.

Software Engineering: (Update) (8th Edition) ReviewI used this book as the text in my software engineering class in the spring semester of 2008. When I was evaluating it for potential adoption, I did not read through it in detail, I looked over the chapter titles and subtitles, read the first few chapters and examined the exercises at the end of the first few chapters. As the semester progressed, I found myself wishing I had read further into the text.
As I moved through the chapters, I found myself mentally noting over and over again that topics are repeated. When the class was over, I asked the students their opinion of the book and they were unanimous, with no prompting from me, in saying that there is a great deal of repetition after the first chapters.
I have no complaint about the quality of exposition or the coverage of software engineering in this book. My reason for not continuing to use it in future classes is solely due to my belief that the size could have been reduced from the current 840 pages to around 600 pages with no real loss of content of flow.

Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond (2nd Edition) ReviewSoftware architecture really is unlike any other aspect of its design. The architecture has deeper meaning and larger scale than any other aspect, and can't be discussed in the same ways.
This book opens that discussion. Among the "architecture" books I've read lately, this is the only one to offer concrete advice on describing, presenting, and analyzing archtiectural features of a system. It identifies a number of documentation types and variations. It also identifies a number of different readers - developers, future architects, users, etc. - and addresses their different documentation needs.
The authors use a little UML, but not a lot. For one thing, standard UML works at too low a level for architectural discussion. Classes, and even hierarchies of class inheritance are such fine-grained entities that architecture gernerally won't address them. Instead, the authors offer a number of diagramming styles of their own. For once, I agree with the need for non-standard notation.
Even so, I think they under-utilize the existing standards in favor of their own terminology and notation. They could have used a UML profile for lots of the discussion. It would have had to be a new profile, however, not just a force-fit of the real-time profile. They also under-used the existing architecture standards (IEEE/ANSI, DoD, NASA, and more) in favor of their own discussion. Maybe their approach can be used in any of those frameworks, but that should have been more explicit.
I see only one major flaw in this book, the assumption that a software system's architecture describes the program delivered to a customer. That's way too narrow. A large system includes things like test harnesses, debug instrumentation, application-specific QA tools, and user documentation of many kinds. Those can be major undertakings of their own. They are intimately tied to the delivered software, and may constrain the actual product.
On the postivie side, this book offer an extensive real-world case study. That probably doubles the book's value, by putting a concrete face on the otherwise abstract discussion.
There are two ways to use this book: you can agree with it, or think about it and disagree with it. If you really think about it, though, you get it's full value whether you agree or not.

Software Quality Engineering: Testing, Quality Assurance, and Quantifiable Improvement ReviewI made the mistake of assigning this book for CSE 5321 Software Testing (a graduate course) at the University of Texas at Arlington during the fall of 2008. I abandoned it 2/3 of the way into the semester. I replaced it with "Introduction to Software Testing" by Ammann & Offutt.

The Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures ReviewThis book is a repository of architectural techniques and knowledge that is intended to be customized per project. It is geared towards system architecture, of which software architect is one small discipline, which is true in the context of this book and the systems it refers too. The systems they are referencing are airplane systems, fighter jets, and other large systems.
I do believe the book is a great start in building a repository of architectural techniques and knowledge. One thing the repository must accomplish before it is really usable is being distributed electronically. The author says that is in the works.
The book is a goldmine of information and guidance. They include a ton of content geared towards the decision making process. It is in the format of Pitfalls, Negative consequences, and Mitigations.
Amazon has made the content searchable. You can check out the table of contents, and spend some time searching on topics, for example "architecture tools", "evaluations", or "performance". Also, if you search the web for MFESA or "Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures" you will find some presentation and papers done by the author, which will give you a good look at some of the material found in the book.
The authors state that this is a work in progress and this is only the beginning. Hopefully in coming content we will see some guidance on tactics as they are related to quality attributes. I have not seen a more complete compilation of quality attributes anywhere, but they stop at the quality attributes. They do for what I would consider a good reason, it would have double or tripled the size of the book if they would have picked a domain and covered tactics. They do cover architectural mechanisms, styles, and patterns.
They also cover decision-making techniques in detail, and a tactic is a design decision that enables control over a quality attribute. They dedicate an entire appendix to decision-making techniques.
Although the book is geared towards system architecture, it also applies 100% to software architecture. I have not found any information in the book that is not relevant to software architecture.
This is a must have reference for any system or software architect. Keep in mind it is not a process, it is a repository that is used to create an instance of a process. Every project is different to a certain degree, and because of that, every project needs its own instance of a process.The Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures OverviewThe architects of today's large and complex systems all too often struggle with the lack of a consistent set of principles and practices that adequately address the entire breadth of systems architecture. Software Quality Assurance: From Theory to Implementation ReviewAlthough written as a college text (the publisher also has instructor manual, syllabus and discussion guidelines, and test material), this book sufficiently reflects real world SQA to be used by working practitioners. My review focus is on the latter use.
Chapters that will be of interest to real world SQA include Chapter 3. Software Quality Factors (excellent foundation for a metrics initiative), Chapter 5. Contract Review (checklists for proposal and contract review are excellent), Chapters 7 (Integrating Quality Activities in the Project Life Cycle - especially the model for SQA defect removal effectiveness and cost) and 8 (Reviews, which includes supporting templates), and Chapter 11. Assuring The Quality of Software Maintenance, which is an often overlooked aspect of SQA.
Note that this book has been written to support ISO 9001 and contains chapters that are specifically slanted towards that approach. Included are chapters on document and configuration control, auditing, and attaining ISO 9001 certification. The author also provides solid information on ISO/IEC Quality Assurance standards, IEEE/ANSI Standards, and MIL-STD-498, as well as on common assessment approaches (CMM and SPICE).
As a textbook the coverage of every facet of SQA from why and what, to testing, metrics and its role in organizations and projects are thoroughly covered. The fact that the material is up-to-date and truly reflects the real world makes this one of the better texts for college level courses because it does prepare students for roles as practitioners.Software Quality Assurance: From Theory to Implementation OverviewSoftware quality assurance (SQA) systems are vital for software developers in the software and the electronics industries as well as for information systems divisions in organizations.This book, based on many years ofconsulting and teaching experience, is designed to serve three audiences: students at universities and colleges, participants in vocational training courses in the industry and practitioners/professionals.
