Verilog Digital System Design with CDROM (McGraw-Hill Professional Engineering) ReviewI have used this book in my graduate level course. As a intermediate level person, I have found this book very useful to understand the design process, simulation, synthesis and etc. I would strongly recommend this book for both beginners and intermediate level programmers, as concept of HDL is written clearly in an understandable way. A person who is interested in the Digital Circuit Design would find an excellent flow between each chapters, and informations in each chapters are described very well. On the other hand, I found that the book is kind of outdated, and someone who wants to use this book as a Reference Book may not find it useful.Verilog Digital System Design with CDROM (McGraw-Hill Professional Engineering) OverviewHardware description languages are used to design high density VLSI, allowing designers to put millions of transistors on a single substrate. Verilog is closing in on VHDL as the most popular of the hardware description languages. This is a tutorial in designing with Verilog. Each major chapter features in-depth Verilog examples of the coding described, and all the examples are assembled into a final full CPU design. The CD-ROM includes a Verilog simulator and all examples worked in the book.

Systems Analysis and Design (Shelly Cashman) ReviewThe book is easy to read and understand, but it is supposed to come with a printed access card to allow access to additional resources on the website. My book was missing this card. There was nothing in the description while ordering the book to indicate that this item was needed.
Back to the book... it is clear and concise with good examples. Some things are a bit wrong or impractical for real-world use, but it is acceptable for providing an overview for a beginner.Systems Analysis and Design (Shelly Cashman) OverviewSYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN, NINTH EDITION offers a practical, visually appealing approach to information systems development.

Rapid GUI Programming with Python and Qt (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development) ReviewFor any open source programming tool, there are always those who are quick to point out that free online documentation is of excellent quality and that a commercially published book adds questionable value. Indeed, the open process by which open source tools are made, which reveals the why's & wherefore's of the internal workings to anyone who looks, leads directly to the production of excellent online documentation; this is one of the great strengths of open source software. But everyone's needs are different. A college student or free software volunteer often has looser deadlines, less budget, and a more perfectionist attitude than, for example, a non-expert programmer, working in industry, trying to expeditiously solve a specific problem. A book of this genre is intended mainly for the latter audience, whereas the former may be disappointed at spending $50 when a web browser could have done the job. Cash-strapped college students, I know your pain; I used to be one. This book is not a particularly cost-effective study aid. If you live and breathe GUI progamming and can type out GTK2 and wxwidget classes by heart, then this book is probably a waste of time for you.
Having said that, I review this book with a view toward its value to its intended audience: Does buying this book and using it get the job done $50 cheaper, including the value of your own professional time, compared to the best available alternative? My experience is yes.
I am an electrical engineer, but not a programming expert. I have, at various times in my career, flipped bits in assembly language, suffered the rigors of Fortran, and slapped together contraptions in Matlab, VEE, Labview, etc. I have also had the misfortune of programming production test automation in Visual Basic, because that is what commercial instruments natively support. It is the shortcomings of VB that bring me to PyQT. I need to write test code that is portable, maintainable, and reliable. To give just one example, I don't want to fly across the Pacific Ocean to program workarounds for bugs in VB, because machines in the Chinese factory run Win98, and my development system in the US runs Win2k, and VB doesn't behave the same. But this is a book review, not a place to extol the virtues of PyQT nor criticize VB.
I have programmed in Python before, though for me Python has always been a language for one-off numerical or string processing tasks, where a spreadsheet is too limited and my bash script-fu is short of the task. I found the first three chapters on Python a helpful review, though it is not a complete instruction in Python. Compete beginners to Python will probably want to buy a separate book or work through the python.org tutorials. The author glosses over things that could trip up beginners; tellingly, he uses the term 'pythonic' without introduction. He is, however, careful to point out pitfalls that can waylay real-world production code, or would be of interest to experienced Perl/Ruby/VB programmers, like how Python handles the distinctions regarding {im}mutable types and {deep|shallow} copying.
I have never programmed QT before, and this book is indeed a complete introduction to QT. You don't need to know anything about QT nor how to program in C++ (QT's native language). Being able to read C++ syntax helps, though, because this book is not a QT reference, so you will probably have to look things up in the online QT references, which are written in C++.
It is something of a truism that the best way to learn a language is to read & understand someone else's well-written code, and then use that to write a program of your own. That is the approach used here, and the printed book format permits interleaving fragments of code with explanatory material in a way that doesn't work well on a computer screen. As such the text complements rather than duplicates the online documentation.
Regarding the book as a physical object, the quality is good but some extra features would have been nice. No CD is included, which I consider an oversight for a book at this price. Even the shortest examples lack source code listings, except as snippets woven into the text. You have to download the example code from a URL buried in the introduction, which is odd considering how important the example code is to this style of instruction. Occasional sidebar topics, icons, and cross-references help to organize the material, though not to the spoon-feeding level of "For {Dummies|Idiots}" books. The index is a bit above average for a book of this type, better than pure machine-generated grep output that sometimes passes for an index these days, but not as good as the best manual indices of decades past. The cover, binding, & paper stock are of decent quality. The book will stay open to just about any page when laid on a table, and the glue looks like it will, well probably, hold the sheaves in for many years. No color is used, nor edge printing to help find the chapters, which would have been helpful for a book this long.Rapid GUI Programming with Python and Qt (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development) Overview

Artifice and Design: Art and Technology in Human Experience ReviewIf you are interested in the relationship between art and technology, this book is a must read. In Allen's first book, Truth in Philosophy, he argues that truth is not fundamentally propositional, not a function of correspondence with reality. In his second book, Knowledge & Civilization, he reorients epistemology within an evolutionary and ecological framework. In this, his most recent book, he offers a fascinating analysis of the relationship between art and technology, not in opposition, but as interdependent aspects of human evolution. Highly recommended!Artifice and Design: Art and Technology in Human Experience Overview"As familiar and widely appreciated works of modern technology, bridges are a good place to study the relationship between the aesthetic and the technical. Fully engaged technical design is at once aesthetic and structural. In the best work (the best design, the most well made), the look and feel of a device (its aesthetic, perceptual interface) is as important a part of the design problem as its mechanism (the interface of parts and systems). We have no idea how to make something that is merely efficient, a rational instrument blindly indifferent to how it appears. No engineer can design such a thing and none has ever been built."--from Artifice and DesignIn an intriguing book about the aesthetics of technological objects and the relationship between technical and artistic accomplishment, Barry Allen develops the philosophical implications of a series of interrelated concepts-knowledge, artifact, design, tool, art, and technology-and uses them to explore parallel questions about artistry in technology and technics in art. This may be seen at the heart of Artifice and Design in Allen's discussion of seven bridges: he focuses at length on two New York bridges--the Hell Gate Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge--and makes use of original sources for insight into the designers' ideas about the aesthetic dimensions of their work.Allen starts from the conviction that art and technology must be treated together, as two aspects of a common, technical human nature. The topics covered in Artifice and Design are wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, drawing from evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology, and the history and anthropology of art and technology. The book concludes that it is a mistake to think of Art as something subjective, or as an arbitrary social representation, and of Technology as an instrumental form of purposive rationality. "By segregating art and technology," Allen writes, "we divide ourselves against ourselves, casting up self-made obstacles to the ingenuity of art and technology."

Design Knowing and Learning: Cognition in Design Education ReviewThis book contains papers presented at a design education conference at Georgia Tech. This collection of articles are written by renowned authors from different design (engineering, computer science, cognitive psy., arch., etc.) disciplines. As a PhD student in design, I found many articles are well-written and useful for design research. It covers a wide range of topics (experimental methods for design studies, protocol analysis, design thinking, design expertise, design cognition, etc.) The book is on the expensive side but that is the only con in my opinion.Design Knowing and Learning: Cognition in Design Education OverviewWide aspects of a university education address design: the conceptualization, planning and implementation of man-made artifacts. All areas of engineering, parts of computer science and of course architecture and industrial design all claim to teach design. Yet the education of design tends ot follow tacit practices, without explicit assumptions, goals and processes.
This book is premised on the belief that design education based on a cognitive science approach can lead to significant improvements in the effectiveness of university design courses and to the future capabilities of practicing designers. This applies to all professional areas of design. The book grew out of publications and a workshop focusing on design education. This volume attempts to outline a framework upon which new efforts in design education might be based.
The book includes chapters dealing with six broad aspects of the study of design education: • Methodologies for undertaking studies of design learning • Longitudinal assessment of design learning • Methods and cases for assessing beginners, experts and special populations • Studies of important component processes • Structure of design knowledge • Design cognition in the classroom

Sensors Handbook ReviewThe sensors handbook is mainly a collection of 75 research articles. The articles describe research on various sensor systems in industry and academia. For example, chapters 11-15 are review papers on MEMS research in a few US universities, and Chapter 27 is about research on a networked smart sensor system. The information in these papers say little about design of sensors and sensor systems, seletion and specs. of sensors, setting up sensors, and advantages/disadvantages of various sensors. In summary, I found that Sensors Handbood did not contain the kind of information I expected to find in such a handbook and therefore it was not very useful.Sensors Handbook Overview

Enterprise Architecture and Integration: Methods, Implementation and Technologies Review"What's in a name?" -W. Shakespeare
It's like being hit by a bus; this book is a serious read. I had to read it twice to simply understand the reasoning behind the title "Enterprise Architecture and Integration".
This is not a typical technical book. It is a collection of concepts, statistics, challenges and solutions packed in only about 360 pages, but after you are done reading it you feel like you just finished reading Leo Tolstoy's war and peace.
Only after reading the whole book, you will realize that sum of the pieces, and the knowledge acquired throughout the book, is what will make you start appreciating the book, and its value; which is the product of collaboration between the authors of each chapter, and the hard work by Wing Lam to put it together.
Of course there were some questions in my mind, such as to why they thought it was important to talk about RFID, specifically in the last chapter of the last section Hmmmmm, also why the "Architects" didn't see the downfall of the SOA and it's shortcomings including its inability to deliver on ROI.

I am a firm believer that architectural books should not be bound by time and space but represent concepts, ideas creations that are applicable regardless, so therefore I suggest that the title be changed to "Making of an Enterprise Architect and an Integrator", which I believe what this book intends on delivering. And to answer Mr. Shakespeare's question I simply say: Everything.
Best Fishes and thank you for reading.

The Process of Creating Life: Nature of Order, Book 2: An Essay on the Art of Building and the Nature of the Universe (The Nature of Order)(Flexible) ReviewReview by Nikos A. Salingaros.
PART A. REVIEW FOR ARCHITECTS.
Contemporary architecture is increasingly grounded in science and mathematics. Architectural discourse has shifted radically from the sometimes disorienting Derridean deconstruction, to engaging scientific terms such as fractals, chaos, complexity, nonlinearity, and evolving systems. That's where the architectural action is -- at least for cutting-edge architects and thinkers -- and every practicing architect and student needs to become conversant with these terms and know what they mean. Unfortunately, the vast majority of architecture faculty are unprepared to explain them to students, not having had a scientific education themselves.
Here is an architecture book by an architect/scientist, just in time to help architects in the new millennium. Alexander discusses many of the scientific terms arising in cutting-edge architecture, and explains them to those who don't have scientific training or advanced mathematical knowledge. We find discussions of the evolution of forms; the importance of process in design; iteration; genetic algorithms; sequences of transformations; different levels of scale (i.e. fractals); etc. They are explained here by an architect who is also a scientist, because he wants to change the way architects think and build. Alexander is not merely popularizing other scientists' results and making them accessible to architects: he is in fact presenting new and original scientific work that ties many of these concepts together in a way that will be useful to architects.
Alexander spends many of the 636 pages of this book talking about PROCESS. He describes the sequence of steps leading to a built form, and how each step depends on all previous steps. Alexander distinguishes between good and bad sequences of steps, where the latter are marked by some disruptive discontinuity, and which, as a result, cannot lead to coherent form. It follows that the method of design taught in architecture schools for decades -- "conceive an interesting image in your mind, then impose it onto the environment" -- is wrong. ALEXANDER ARGUES THAT COHERENCE CAN NEVER BE ACHIEVED EXCEPT BY THE SEQUENCE METHOD. Don't forget this is the Alexander who wrote "A Pattern Language", an equally revolutionary book. Therefore, every architect, especially those whose own design methodology clashes with Alexander's ideas, is well advised to become aware of what he says instead of simply dismissing him offhand.
The present volume is the second of four. I believe that, with some effort, it can be read independently from the first volume (not that I am suggesting this, but merely to encourage people to plunge into Volume 2 immediately). This is the one of the four volumes that is most likely to appeal to those who are already interested in and actively working in applying the New Sciences to architecture. I therefore urge innovative architects and architecture students to read this book. In my opinion, it should enlighten everyone's conception of the design process, and help to initiate a reexamination in one's mind of how new ideas for structures and buildings are generated. This book might well influence in a major way how buildings of the future are designed and built, hence how they will look. No-one who thinks deeply and conscientiously about design today should pass it by.
PART B. REVIEW FOR SCIENTISTS.
Alexander is famous in the architectural world, yet he trained in Physics and Mathematics in Cambridge, and was part of the group of scientists who developed systems theory along with Herbert Simon. He has been investigating the interaction between science and architecture all of his life, and the four-volume work "The Nature of Order" contains the results of his researches. Volume 2, in particular, contains the most science. It may surprise many professional scientists that Alexander has managed to conceive of new results by applying architecture to science, surely a development that is as unexpected as it is novel.
This book contains interesting scientific insights. For example, already by page 42, Alexander proposes a radical rethinking of the standard Neo-Darwinian synthesis. He suggests that, based on a broad range of examples, evolving form in any context is driven just as much by intrinsic long-range forces having to do with geometrical configurations, as by the usual random Darwinian selection process. He thus takes suggestions by Stuart Kauffman and Brian Goodwin and develops them into a proto-theory of morphogenesis. It is not complete, and Alexander knows that, but I believe that the evolutionary biology community will get very excited about this idea. He supports his arguments by using phenomenology, and providing a theoretical basis wherever he can. I believe we are going to see a lot of activity, as ideas from this book inspire other authors to try to prove or disprove them. All of that is healthy, and will eventually establish Alexander as a contributor to scientific thinking.
My own favorite part is the discussion of how generative sequences break symmetry: instead of producing identical components (i.e., windows, houses, office blocks, apartments), the same generative process gives rise to similar types of complex objects that are individualized and thus distinct. This helps us to understand natural complexity, where adaptation does indeed produce diversity within the same typology. The underlying problem is how to correlate the different scales in a complex system, hitherto unsolved in any discipline. Therefore, this discussion is of great interest to computer scientists, who are grappling with modularization in software so as to handle the increasing complexity of code.
I am a scientist, and I have profited from Alexander's efforts to understand very deep problems in complexity. The price to pay is having to read through all the architectural examples (which may or may not be of interest to many scientists). Alexander is like a moth circling around fascinating problems. Even when he does not give a solution, his circling in fact identifies the problem, and by approaching it, he gives nontrivial hints towards its eventual solution. And, don't forget that it's the architectural stuff that's going to inspire architects to build a more beautiful world for the rest of us.The Process of Creating Life: Nature of Order, Book 2: An Essay on the Art of Building and the Nature of the Universe (The Nature of Order)(Flexible) Overview
The processes of nature can make an infinite number of human faces, each one unique, each one beautiful. The same is true for daffodils, streams, and stars. But man-made creations-especially the towns and buildings of the 20th century-have only occasionally been really good, more often mediocre, and in the last 50 years have very often been deadly. What is the reason for the difference?

In Book 2, Alexander explains in detail the kinds of process that are capable of generating living structure. The unfolding of living structure in natural systems is compared to the unfolding of buildings and town plans in traditional society, and then contrasted with present-day building processes.

The comparison reveals deep and shocking problems which pervade the present day planning and construction of buildings. Pervasive changes are needed to create a world in which living process-and hence living structure-are possible; these are changes which are ultimately attainable only through a transformation of society.

It is the use of sequences which makes it possible for each building to become unique, exactly fitted to its context, and harmonious. And it is also this use of sequences which makes it possible for people to participate effectively in the layout of their own buildings and communities.

"This will change the world as effectively as the advent of printing changed the world . . ."-Doug Carlston, Silicon Valley luminary and former president of Broderbund

Christopher Alexander is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, architect, builder, and author of many books and technical papers. He is the winner of the first medal for research ever awarded by the American Institute of Architects.

Design of Multithreaded Software: The Entity-Life Modeling Approach ReviewDr Sanden has created a very impressive piece of literature. As a professor of computer science, I found this book to be an incredible asset to my professional "tool kit," so to speak. Further, Dr. Sanden's book would be critical asset as a text book as its narration keeps the reader enticed, yet has a number of solid application concepts. I unequivocally recommend this book as a professional asset as well as a text book. Again, this book is quite an impressive piece of work that is a strong contribution to this professional field.Design of Multithreaded Software: The Entity-Life Modeling Approach OverviewThis book assumes familiarity with threads (in a language such as Ada, C#, or Java)and introduces the entity-life modeling (ELM) design approach for certain kinds of multithreaded software. ELM focuses on "reactive systems," which continuously interact with the problem environment. These "reactive systems" include embedded systems, as well as such interactive systems as cruise controllers and automated teller machines.
Part I covers two fundamentals: program-language thread support and state diagramming. These are necessary for understanding ELM and are provided primarily for reference. Part II covers ELM from different angles. Part III positions ELM relative to other design approaches.

Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs ReviewAs it is stated on the back cover, if you are just getting started in the field of digital sytems design with programmable logic, this book is definitely for you. Provides an easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to learn way of introducing this field to students.
As was mentioned in the previous review, this book does touch on many different subjects, giving the reader a good taste of the various topics that should be understood. I like how the author introduced programmable logic in general in the first chapter and moved on to the necessary topics a student must learn to be an efficient digital designer; topics including truth tables, boolean algebra, k-maps, to name a few.
The author also provied a very good chapter on digital signal processing (DSP), which is not often found in introductory digital design books being that it is a whole animal in itself. Ubiquitous Computing: Smart Devices, Environments and Interactions ReviewMuch has been said and written on the ideas and technologies of Ubiquitous Computing since Mark Weiser's pioneering work at Xerox PARC in the late 1980's to mid 1990's. There have been conferences in many related areas, proceedings books and journal articles, and Adam Greenfield's popular yet wide-ranging book "Everyware", reviewing some of the relevant technologies, social implications, and policy concerns. Yet, until now there has been no comprehensive textbook suitable for a course in the Computer Science curriculum covering all of the component technologies of Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing. Professor Poslad's comprehensive textbook provides a tutorial and reference on all of the component technologies and study areas relevant to this increasingly important field, covering such topics as sensors and actuators, distributed systems, embedded operating systems, various form factors including "smart dust" and wearable systems, and the HCI and security issues which are concerns for research and development in this area. This well-organized and comprehensive textbook will serve for classroom teaching and reference in the Computer Science curriculum and ancillary fields including Architecture, Psychology and Public Policy that will be profoundly affected by these technologies in the coming years.
I heartily recommend this text as a comprehensive and technical introduction to the fields and literature of Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing, a research, development and human endeavor that will become increasingly important in the near future.
--Ira LaefskyUbiquitous Computing: Smart Devices, Environments and Interactions OverviewThis book provides an introduction to the complex field of ubiquitous computing
Ubiquitous Computing (also commonly referred to as Pervasive Computing) describes the ways in which current technological models, based upon three base designs: smart (mobile, wireless, service) devices, smart environments (of embedded system devices) and smart interaction (between devices), relate to and support a computing vision for a greater range of computer devices, used in a greater range of (human, ICT and physical) environments and activities. The author details the rich potential of ubiquitous computing, the challenges involved in making it a reality, and the prerequisite technological infrastructure. Additionally, the book discusses the application and convergence of several current major and future computing trends.

Key Features:
Provides an introduction to the complex field of ubiquitous computing
Describes how current technology models based upon six different technology form factors which have varying degrees of mobility wireless connectivity and service volatility: tabs, pads, boards, dust, skins and clay, enable the vision of ubiquitous computing
Describes and explores how the three core designs (smart devices, environments and interaction) based upon current technology models can be applied to, and can evolve to, support a vision of ubiquitous computing and computing for the future
Covers the principles of the following current technology models, including mobile wireless networks, service-oriented computing, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence, context-awareness, autonomous systems, micro-electromechanical systems, sensors, embedded controllers and robots
Covers a range of interactions, between two or more UbiCom devices, between devices and people (HCI), between devices and the physical world.
Includes an accompanying website with PowerPoint slides, problems and solutions, exercises, bibliography and further reading

Graduate students in computer science, electrical engineering and telecommunications courses will find this a fascinating and useful introduction to the subject. It will also be of interest to ICT professionals, software and network developers and others interested in future trends and models of computing and interaction over the next decades.

Comprehensive Functional Verification: The Complete Industry Cycle (Systems on Silicon) ReviewEveryone engaged in functional verification of digital hardware designs should read this book. It truly is comprehensive (which means that it can't go into depth on everything), but there is a very good amount of depth on most of the topics that should be covered by such a book, as much depth as 704 pages would allow.
This book is not about languages but about concepts, which are more important. Having said this, HDLs, HVLs and programming languages are used for illustration. Such concepts include re-use strategies for verification components (although the essential topic of revision control is sadly only mentioned in passing), formal verification and escape analysis.
I'm troubled by the very short Acknowledgments section. The authors were fortunate to have Scott Taylor as a reviewer. I worked with Scott on Compaq's Alpha microprocessor team and he is very talented. However, there are quite a few mistakes in the book and some paragraphs that could have been written more clearly. The authors would have benefited from more peer review. For example, Wolfgang Roesner and I were together at IBM on the POWER6 microprocessor in 2004 and 2005, but he never asked me for help!
At Cosmic Horizon, I had been working alone (until recently) on verification of the Sputnik microprocessor. For assistance in debugging the integer multiplication unit, I found it useful to create a cycle-accurate reference model. Working alone, I was forced to come up with many such ideas on my own, so I became curious about how other verification experts think. I bought the book to learn about that. Yes, I had worked at IBM myself, but I hadn't experienced everything while I was there, and I wanted to solidify in my mind why we did things the way we did. Since reading CFV, I have begun to morph Cosmic Horizon's FSS product according to some of the book's better ideas. For example, the test case database no longer contains expected results. Instead, I am developing a cycle-ignorant (my idea, necessary for architectural verification) reference model to generate expected results on-the-fly.
I was attracted to this language-nonspecific book written by three IBM microprocessor verification engineers because I focus on microprocessors (and would like to return to IBM), but the book successfully remains general enough to apply to non-microprocessor digital hardware designs as well. As I said, everyone should read this book.
And Wolfgang, call me next time!Comprehensive Functional Verification: The Complete Industry Cycle (Systems on Silicon) Overview

Embedded Core Design with FPGAs Review"Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" written by Dr. Zainalabedin Navabi is an excellent book to learn FPGA based Embedded system design. This book covers everything a person needs to know for learning FPGAs.
It explains logic design concepts first. Even if a person is very new to the digital field, he/she will be able to start right from there. Then the chapter named RTL design with Verilog, gives an opportunity to learn a hardware description language named Verilog right from this book. This chapter is so well written that no other separate book on verilog is necessary to learn.
This book explains very well how the Field Programmable Devices work. It has lots of examples to work with and program with Altera UP3 and DE2 board. These examples have made this book a unique one, because most of the books only provide examples, but this one shows how one can really use an FPGA board and provides step by step procedure to run those example in the FPGA board.
This book also has a chapter to design with Embedded processors. Embedded design steps were shown brilliantly with examples like design of a microcontroller etc.
Overall, this is a very good book on Embedded system design which covers topics like logic design to learning verilog to using FPGA boards to designing embedded processors.Embedded Core Design with FPGAs OverviewThis is a complete toolkit for designing embedded cores and utilizing those cores in an embedded system. A landmark guide in digital system design, "Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" equips today's computer engineers with everything they need to design embedded cores and apply those cores in a state-of-the-art embedded system. This practical resource brings together logic design, computer architecture, Verilog, FPGAs, Hardware/Software design, and SoCs, explaining how engineers can draw on their computer engineering background to achieve cutting-edge embedded designs.Renowned design expert and educator Zainalabedin Navabi first covers the basics of logic design, RT Level Verilog, computer architectures, and the architecture of modern field programmable devices. He then explores the design of utility cores that are used for high-level core-based designs, with specific focus on existing Altera cores. Finally, he describes higher-end design methodologies, including design of hardware/software systems, CPU configurations, embedded systems, and the utilization of various Altera Nios II processors."Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" features: a full array of design aids, including Verilog, FPLD structures, design and programming environments, and software and hardware tools; the latest embedded system design techniques, including use of high-level integrated environments, SOPC development tools, utilizing existing processor cores, and developing your own customized processor; and, a clear focus on utilizing Altera's new DE series and UP3 development boards and design software, including SOPC Builder and IDE software design environment. It helps to master every aspect of embedded core design - High-Level Hardware/Software Design Concepts: High-Level System Design Methodology; RT Level Logic Design; RT Level Verilog; Computer Hardware and Software Programming Languages; and, FPGA Architecture and Utilization. Group Cognition: Computer Support for Building Collaborative Knowledge (Acting with Technology) ReviewThis book is, I may say, one of the kind of books I always wanted to have, to read and revisit for getting its golden nuggets. It is unique because it provides, from several different perspectives (technical as well as philosophical), deep insights in what is going on in computer-based collaborative applications, with emphasis on Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. The need of collaborative applications is justified and analysed starting both from practice and theoretically. The text very well presents and analyses the valuable experience of the author in designing and implementing a wide range of applications in e-learning, groupware, artificial intelligence (expert systems and knowledge-based and text processing (Latent Semantic Indexing). This experience description may be better understood if we see the text almost as a saga ending with one of the main ideas of the book: knowledge building appears in verbal-mediated collaboration in small groups. The practical experiences are doubled by deep interdisciplinary theoretical considerations, including philosophy (integrating ideas from Heidegger, Vygotsky, Derrida, Bourdieu, Bakhtin, Adorno, etc.), learning sciences and sociology (e.g. Garfinkel's ethnomethodology, and Schegloff's and Sacks' conversation analysis). State of the art theories like activity theory, distributed cognition, situated learning, knowledge building, and group cognition are also integrated in the whole.Group Cognition: Computer Support for Building Collaborative Knowledge (Acting with Technology) OverviewInnovative uses of global and local networks of linked computers make newways of collaborative working, learning, and acting possible. In Group CognitionGerry Stahl explores the technological and social reconfigurations that are neededto achieve computer-supported collaborative knowledge building--group cognition thattranscends the limits of individual cognition. Computers can provide active mediafor social group cognition where ideas grow through the interactions within groupsof people; software functionality can manage group discourse that results in sharedunderstandings, new meanings, and collaborative learning. Stahl offers softwaredesign prototypes, analyzes empirical instances of collaboration, and elaborates atheory of collaboration that takes the group, rather than the individual, as theunit of analysis.Stahl's design studies concentrate on mechanisms to support groupformation, multiple interpretive perspectives, and the negotiation of groupknowledge in applications as varied as collaborative curriculum development byteachers, writing summaries by students, and designing space voyages by NASAengineers. His empirical analysis shows how, in small-group collaborations, thegroup constructs intersubjective knowledge that emerges from and appears in thediscourse itself. This discovery of group meaning becomes the springboard forStahl's outline of a social theory of collaborative knowing. Stahl also discussessuch related issues as the distinction between meaning making at the group level andinterpretation at the individual level, appropriate research methodology, philosophical directions for group cognition theory, and suggestions for furtherempirical work.

Digital VLSI Design with Verilog: A Textbook from Silicon Valley Technical Institute ReviewVerilog is one of the key languages for chip layout. Not especially difficult, but you still have to somehow learn it. You can easily get manuals on Verilog, but those aren't well suited as a learning pedagogy. The attraction of this book is that it lays out [pun intended] just such a learning path. The chapters explain various aspects of the language. In toto, you get a pretty exposure to most of the language.
Plus, Verilog allows powerful simulations of chips. Necessary to reduce the cost of actually fabricating a functioning design. Another advantage of the book is that you learn how to use Verilog for design for testing, and for doing that testing.Digital VLSI Design with Verilog: A Textbook from Silicon Valley Technical Institute OverviewThis unique textbook is structured as a step-by-step course of study along the lines of a VLSI IC design project. In a nominal schedule of 12 weeks, two days and about 10 hours per week, the entire verilog language is presented, from the basics to everything necessary for synthesis of an entire 70,000 transistor, full-duplex serializer - deserializer, including synthesizable PLLs.Digital VLSI Design With Verilog is all an engineer needs for in-depth understanding of the verilog language: Syntax, synthesis semantics, simulation, and test. Complete solutions for the 27 labs are provided on the accompanying CD-ROM. For a reader with access to appropriate electronic design tools, all solutions can be developed, simulated, and synthesized as described in the book.A partial list of design topics includes design partitioning, hierarchy decomposition, safe coding styles, back-annotation, wrapper modules, concurrency, race conditions, assertion-based verification, clock synchronization, and design for test.Coverage of specific devices includes basic discussion and exercises on flip-flops, latches, combinational logic, muxes, counters, shift-registers, decoders, state machines, memories (including parityand ECC), FIFOs, and PLLs. Verilog specify blocks, with their path delays and timing checks, also are covered.

Built to Love: Creating Products That Captivate Customers ReviewI have long understood the importance of putting customer desire up front when developing new products. "Built to Love" has given me several new tools to help capture and ponder what our customers might respond to. More importantly, the book has given us a better way to TALK about how our designs will be experienced by the user and what we might change to heighten that experience. Excellent examples from across a wide range of products give the reader a way to personalize the material.
"Built to Love" is that rare business book that offers insights and techniques that can be applied immediately.Built to Love: Creating Products That Captivate Customers Overview

Built to Love reveals how companies can create captivating products that energize the marketplace and set the standard for what customers want and expect. Firms often hope the answer is to produce the latest high technology devices – only to find that they fail to light up the marketplace. Or firms rely on ads that overstate or mislead, leaving the customer disappointed and disillusioned. Instead, a deeper emotional engagement between the customer and product is required, regardless of whether the products are physical products, services, technologies, software, systems, or brands.

Using a combination of industry-based research and laboratory experiments, the authors demonstrate that customers will richly pay for products that authentically provide emotional fulfillment. They uncover the science behind successful products that create an avid and loyal following, and they present evidence that product emotions increase a product's success in the marketplace as well as a firm's success in the stock market (even when the economy is down!).

A practical how-to guide, the book next shows how to analyze customers' emotional needs and translate those needs into features that galvanize customers. Throughout, the book uses revealing case studies that show how to energize customers in both consumer and business-to-business worlds, in both large and small firms.

Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture ReviewI have purchased and read many SOA books and they have all fallen into one of 2 camps. They are usually either "HOW-TO" implement a SOAP/XML/WSDL based request response guides with the standard buzzwords of SOA Governance, WS-*Everything and the Kitchen Sink*, and of course a vague description of how an Enterprise Service Bus magically does away with years a poorly implemented legacy systems. This is the first SOA book that I have read that did not waste my time with page after page trivial XML examples but actually presented an entire working formal language(extended or inspired by the UML component model I believe) to describe your existing environment("As-Is") and future-state architecture in everday terms understandable by business users and application developers. I'll admit when I read that the approach is both 'Holistic' and 'Anthropomorphic' I felt like I was being marketed some Ginko-Biloba pseudo mysticism but as I read through I understood that this is an approach to SOA, probably the first, to actually make the the underlying services and consolidation of services visible and tanglible in the way an architect builds a scale model of a proposed structure to provide an in depth understanding of the project to those who are unable to turn equations into 3D structures in there heads(which is most of us). The authors crowning achievement, in my opinon, is the realization that everything (Legacy System, Schedule Batch Job, Business Apporval Process, Business Rules, Storage) must be treated as 'Services' is a quantum leap for SOA that moves the concept of SOA from a vague buzzword to a concrete deliverable, tangible item.Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture OverviewAnswers to your most pressing SOA development questionsHow do we start with service modeling? How do we analyze services for better reusability? Who should be involved? How do we create the best architecture model for our organization? This must-read for all enterprise leaders gives you all the answers and tools needed to develop a sound service-oriented architecture in your organization.Praise for Service-Oriented ModelingService Analysis, Design, and Architecture"Michael Bell has done it again with a book that will be remembered as a key facilitator of the global shift to Service-Oriented Architecture. . . . With this book, Michael Bell provides that foundation and more-an essential bible for the next generation of enterprise IT."-Eric Pulier, Executive Chairman, SOA Software"Michael Bell's insightful book provides common language and techniques for business and technology organizations to take advantage of the SOA paradigm. By focusing modeling techniques on the business problem, Bell provides a way for professionals to work throughout the life cycle to create reusable and enduring services."-Mike Zbranak, CIO, Chase Card Services"This book will become an imperative business and technology service-oriented modeling recipe for any manager, architect, modeler, analyst, and developer in today's software development industry."-Jeff Schneider, CEO, MomentumSI"'Innovative' and 'groundbreaking' are words that best describe Michael Bell's Service-Oriented Modeling. It depicts a true service modeling approach that elegantly closes a clear and critical service modeling gap in the SOA industry. This holistic book ties these concepts together using real-world examples across a service life cycle that transitions services from ideas and concepts into production assets that deliver business value. A must-read for business and technical SOA practitioners."-Eric A. Marks, CEO, AgilePath Corporation"As hot as SOA is today, many business and technology professionals still find it challenging to mind the gap between their disparate methodologies and objectives. Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate ReviewThere is more significance to the title than one may initially assume. Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line. Many executives, thus abused, may then vent their frustrations by behaving boorishly at a Little League game.
In the Foreword, Tom Peters quotes Schrage's assertion that "Innovative prototypes generate innovative teams. Not vice versa." Peters then observes that, in Serious Play, the "big idea" is that "the prototyping process becomes the scaffolding" for an enterprise's approach to innovation. As Schrage explains, "I have always enjoyed rehearsals more than performances." I suggest that you keep that statement clearly in mind as you proceed through the book. It reveals much about Schrage's perspective on the correlations between prototypes and innovation.
Here is how the book is organized: Part I: Getting Real, Part II: Model Behavior, and Part III:S(t)imulating Innovation. Schrage then provides a User's Guide and Bibliography. Throughout the book, he shares a wealth of real-world experience which explains what innovation is, and, what it can help to accomplish, not only with the design of a new product or service but also with the formulation of new and better ways for people to work together. The key is simulation; moreover, "not just playing with representations of ideas" (lots of ideas, the more the better) but "playing with the various versions of representations of ideas."
Near the end of the final chapter, Schrage poses a number of critically important questions, suggesting that the "best hope for answering these questions, or coping with their implications, is to build or grow models and play with them seriously." The world's best companies simulate to innovate. For example: American Airlines, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, IBM, IDEO, Walt Disney, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and Royal Dutch Shell. Schrage believes that the creative tensions between innovators who design and innovators who evolve "will likely result in breakthroughs in products, services, and their yet-to-be-anticipated hybrids." So, why not prototype how to prototype? Why not play simulation games which reveal new and better ways to simulate?
Tom Peters describes Serious Play as "simply the best book on innovation I've ever read." I agree. Perhaps you will, also.Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate Overview
