My book was missing this card. There was nothing in the description while ordering the book to indicate that this item was needed.
Back to the book... it is clear and concise with good examples. Axiomatic Design: Advances and Applications (The Oxford Series on Advanced Manufacturing) ReviewOne of great emerging ideas in the past 20 years is that there are tools to help in the design of robust products and systems. There are other approaches: TRIZ, QFD and other heuristic-based methods. There are also references to Dr. Taguchi's robust design methods (DFSS). The point is that the author here has made his point - DFSS as applied to multi-requirement products and systems... and that includes just about every product/system we use and need... has an overlooked flaw. Read this book to understand what that flaw is and how to address it.
Is the material here ambitious and audacious? Well... yes, wouldn't it be if the author were on to something? I think that the key here is to understand where this information can be immediately used in engineering practice. The principle of design decoupling and Okcam's Razor are not particularly new ideas, but the way that the author is approaching the subject is important. He is trying to get a handle on something that has been to date very heuristically practiced, and often not well executed. If one understands the principles of, for instance, software engineering, it doesn't take long to understand where the author is going with his subject. Suh is a mechanical engineer (MIT), and this fact, in itself, is very surprizing and encouraging. The axioms that Suh present are necessary in order to achieve some sort of order to the discussion. I personally have managed to get past the initial objections to his reuse of certain terms and emphasis on certain axioms. For instance, Suh's principle of "minimum information content" is actually a statement about "less is more" in design from a reliability and design-robustness perspective.
Now for potential buyers: understand that there are applications of this method and theory that are extremely powerful and effective. This method has great implications to the field of systems engineering - it ties the SE discipline to something that you can get your hands on. In particular, look to the application of the method to the design of physical systems and their corresponding manufacturing systems. This isn't a trivial or invalid subject.
People who need ways to handle complexity and the total system design problem will benefit as will designers of common products. Software and hardware designers can both benefit, although the author uses language that is more recognizable in the realm of mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems. This material will take some time to integrate into your own storehouse of knowledge - so don't rush it. Approach this material with a need in hand, but with the understanding that it will likely modify your view of your discipline. Then you will make use of this material. Note the bibliographies; dig into the applications of this theory. Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture ReviewI have purchased and read many SOA books and they have all fallen into one of 2 camps. They are usually either "HOW-TO" implement a SOAP/XML/WSDL based request response guides with the standard buzzwords of SOA Governance, WS-*Everything and the Kitchen Sink*, and of course a vague description of how an Enterprise Service Bus magically does away with years a poorly implemented legacy systems. This is the first SOA book that I have read that did not waste my time with page after page trivial XML examples but actually presented an entire working formal language(extended or inspired by the UML component model I believe) to describe your existing environment("As-Is") and future-state architecture in everday terms understandable by business users and application developers. I'll admit when I read that the approach is both 'Holistic' and 'Anthropomorphic' I felt like I was being marketed some Ginko-Biloba pseudo mysticism but as I read through I understood that this is an approach to SOA, probably the first, to actually make the the underlying services and consolidation of services visible and tanglible in the way an architect builds a scale model of a proposed structure to provide an in depth understanding of the project to those who are unable to turn equations into 3D structures in there heads(which is most of us). The authors crowning achievement, in my opinon, is the realization that everything (Legacy System, Schedule Batch Job, Business Apporval Process, Business Rules, Storage) must be treated as 'Services' is a quantum leap for SOA that moves the concept of SOA from a vague buzzword to a concrete deliverable, tangible item.Service-Oriented Modeling (SOA): Service Analysis, Design, and Architecture OverviewAnswers to your most pressing SOA development questionsHow do we start with service modeling? Business Component Factory : A Comprehensive Overview of Component-Based Development for the Enterprise ReviewThis book is the first I have read that really tackles all aspects of what is required for Enterprise Application Development through a CBD approach.
By defining the levels of component granularity and a recursively discrete approach to breaking a business problem down into components and their constituents as finer grained components, the true requirements for CBD are evident and determined. Many books I have read make the same mistake of only discussing development of components at one level (usually what Herzum defines as the distributed component level) and fail to address the many of the aspects of CBD that are not covered by development alone (deployment, testing, management, integration, and a roadmap for the development process and managment of that process through to delivery of a component based system). The book also talks and applies the component levels to the commonly depicted 4 tier architecture and importantly introduces the concept of components needing to be not only strongly typed for internal systems but also strongly tagged (supporting XML based component messaging/invocation) for virtual and extended systems. The coverage of what is required from a Component Execution Environment (CEE) when components are more course grained than simple distributed components is well covered and continues to define the true requirements for a Business Component Execution Environment (BCVM).
The book is a must read for anyone serious about adopting CBD on and enterprise scale. The book goes well beyond the common text available for CBD (that all concentrate on the short sighted development requirements for distributed components in a fine grained component containment model). I agree with another reviewer that for those of us that have been developing systems in EJB, COM+/DCOM and CORBA much of the book covers lessons we have painfully had to learn in developing multiple component based systems that have to inter-operate, but it goes beyond that in looking at what is necessary for component based systems at the next architectural level (one that may well incorporate disparate distributed component models).Business Component Factory : A Comprehensive Overview of Component-Based Development for the Enterprise OverviewIn this book, Peter Herzum and Oliver Sims present a complete component based strategy, the business component approach, that applies and extends component thinking to all aspects of the software life cycle for enterprise systems. Systems Analysis and Design ReviewPrice reflects quality. This book is superb for System Analyst and Designers (SAD), both beginner and advanced ones. It is very informative that can be used for both learning and reference purposes. The authors explain everything very clearly using the same case examples (CD Selection case) and exercises for every chapter, so it's very easy to understand and keep track as you move chapter by chapter. I used to screw up in SAD but as I started using this book, I learned much more and much better than before. Thanks to the authors for thier good job and my professor who recommended this book to the class. Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World (with CourseMate Printed Access Card) ReviewSpeaking as an undergraduate, _Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World_ is not an easy read, and I found some parts (e.g., OO statechart diagrams) almost inaccessible despite my persistent and conscientious efforts to grasp the material given my little but solid background in OO programming. The authors know their field well, and it is evident they put much effort into writing this book. Yet the model-making approach they presented (notably in chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9) obscured rather than improved my understanding of software development. Perhaps I tend to be averse to graphical models of this kind. In any case, a good introductory object-oriented programming textbook covering Java or C++ is a better place to start to learn these ideas because without actually implementing program code, the models seem like "floating" abstractions.
I have two recommendations to the authors that might improve the average student's ability to understand the content, especially the treatment on modeling:
1. Make the writing style less academic and more conversational. A good example of an accessible and engaging presentation of otherwise "mundane" content is David Kelley's _The Art of Reasoning_ (I know it's a book on informal logic and not systems analysis and design, but there are many parallels between the subjects).
2. After a new concept is introduced, immediately provide exercises *with* ideal solutions at the back of the book. There are no solutions in this textbook and no student solution manual is available. Most students need to start out with many easy but progressively more challenging problems and build on that foundation in order to gain confidence in the discipline. Again, see the "Practice Quizzes" in David Kelley's _The Art of Reasoning_ as an example of a textbook that helps the student comprehend the material. After every significant section, Kelley includes many small exercises (with solutions) in order to test the student's understanding of the concepts or principles and to ensure the student has thoroughly absorbed the information before moving on to more complex knowledge. I stress that I am not recommending that the content be "dumbed down." What I am saying is that since systems analysis and design is difficult and requires much practice to master, it is the job of the teacher to build a bridge between the challenging but potentially graspable ideas and the students who fall short of brilliant. In other words, this book is in desperate need of many smaller, easier problems that progressively build up to the kind of arduous case studies that *are* included at the end of the chapters.
This is a good book if you have the aptitude and appetite for graphical model-making and some experience in programming. New and enhanced coverage of project management also teaches important issues related to adaptive projects as well as the traditional predictive approach to projects. Added perspective is provided for students via the running case studies and "Best Practices" feature.
