Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs ReviewAs it is stated on the back cover, if you are just getting started in the field of digital sytems design with programmable logic, this book is definitely for you. Provides an easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to learn way of introducing this field to students.
As was mentioned in the previous review, this book does touch on many different subjects, giving the reader a good taste of the various topics that should be understood. I like how the author introduced programmable logic in general in the first chapter and moved on to the necessary topics a student must learn to be an efficient digital designer; topics including truth tables, boolean algebra, k-maps, to name a few.
The author also provied a very good chapter on digital signal processing (DSP), which is not often found in introductory digital design books being that it is a whole animal in itself. Also, very good coverage on VHDL and Testbenches. All of the code is provided for you on the companion website to download and use in your own projects/designs, as well as other useful information.
Buy it and with it, begin your collection as you jump into the wonderful world of digital design.Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs OverviewThis textbook explains how to design and develop digital electronic systems using programmable logic devices (PLDs). FPGA Design: Best Practices for Team-based Design ReviewI am started using FPGAs over 15 years ago, and back then, you just started writing HDL and got the thing working.
This approach simply doesn't work anymore - the FPGAs are too big, designs are much more complicated, need for design reuse, need to incorporate FPGA vendor or third party IP, incremental compilers, and so on. Plus, multi-person design teams are often the norm.
This is the first book I know of that walks you through all of these issues, and more, with common sense advice how to approach FPGA design systematically. The book is easy to read (I read the whole thing on a coast-to coast flight), and even for advanced FPGA designers or managers, I guarantee you will find some new ideas and suggestions on how to improve your design flow.
Lastly, despite the fact the author works for Altera, the book is completely nuetral on FPGA vendor choice, and doesn't make any sales pitches on behalf of Altera.FPGA Design: Best Practices for Team-based Design OverviewThis book describes best practices for successful FPGA design. It is the result of the author's meetings with hundreds of customers on the challenges facing each of their FPGA design teams. By gaining an understanding into their design environments, processes, what works and what does not work, key areas of concern in implementing system designs have been identified and a recommended design methodology to overcome these challenges has been developed. This book's content has a strong focus on design teams that are spread across sites. The goal being to increase the productivity of FPGA design teams by establishing a common methodology across design teams; enabling the exchange of design blocks across teams. overage includes the complete FPGA design flow, from the basics to advanced techniques.

Embedded Core Design with FPGAs Review"Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" written by Dr. Zainalabedin Navabi is an excellent book to learn FPGA based Embedded system design. This book covers everything a person needs to know for learning FPGAs.
It explains logic design concepts first. Even if a person is very new to the digital field, he/she will be able to start right from there. Then the chapter named RTL design with Verilog, gives an opportunity to learn a hardware description language named Verilog right from this book. This chapter is so well written that no other separate book on verilog is necessary to learn.
This book explains very well how the Field Programmable Devices work. It has lots of examples to work with and program with Altera UP3 and DE2 board. These examples have made this book a unique one, because most of the books only provide examples, but this one shows how one can really use an FPGA board and provides step by step procedure to run those example in the FPGA board.
This book also has a chapter to design with Embedded processors. Embedded design steps were shown brilliantly with examples like design of a microcontroller etc.
Overall, this is a very good book on Embedded system design which covers topics like logic design to learning verilog to using FPGA boards to designing embedded processors.Embedded Core Design with FPGAs OverviewThis is a complete toolkit for designing embedded cores and utilizing those cores in an embedded system. A landmark guide in digital system design, "Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" equips today's computer engineers with everything they need to design embedded cores and apply those cores in a state-of-the-art embedded system. This practical resource brings together logic design, computer architecture, Verilog, FPGAs, Hardware/Software design, and SoCs, explaining how engineers can draw on their computer engineering background to achieve cutting-edge embedded designs.Renowned design expert and educator Zainalabedin Navabi first covers the basics of logic design, RT Level Verilog, computer architectures, and the architecture of modern field programmable devices. He then explores the design of utility cores that are used for high-level core-based designs, with specific focus on existing Altera cores. Finally, he describes higher-end design methodologies, including design of hardware/software systems, CPU configurations, embedded systems, and the utilization of various Altera Nios II processors."Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" features: a full array of design aids, including Verilog, FPLD structures, design and programming environments, and software and hardware tools; the latest embedded system design techniques, including use of high-level integrated environments, SOPC development tools, utilizing existing processor cores, and developing your own customized processor; and, a clear focus on utilizing Altera's new DE series and UP3 development boards and design software, including SOPC Builder and IDE software design environment. It helps to master every aspect of embedded core design - High-Level Hardware/Software Design Concepts: High-Level System Design Methodology; RT Level Logic Design; RT Level Verilog; Computer Hardware and Software Programming Languages; and, FPGA Architecture and Utilization. Digital VLSI Design with Verilog: A Textbook from Silicon Valley Technical Institute ReviewVerilog is one of the key languages for chip layout. Not especially difficult, but you still have to somehow learn it. You can easily get manuals on Verilog, but those aren't well suited as a learning pedagogy. The attraction of this book is that it lays out [pun intended] just such a learning path. The chapters explain various aspects of the language. In toto, you get a pretty exposure to most of the language.
Plus, Verilog allows powerful simulations of chips. Necessary to reduce the cost of actually fabricating a functioning design. Another advantage of the book is that you learn how to use Verilog for design for testing, and for doing that testing.Digital VLSI Design with Verilog: A Textbook from Silicon Valley Technical Institute OverviewThis unique textbook is structured as a step-by-step course of study along the lines of a VLSI IC design project. In a nominal schedule of 12 weeks, two days and about 10 hours per week, the entire verilog language is presented, from the basics to everything necessary for synthesis of an entire 70,000 transistor, full-duplex serializer - deserializer, including synthesizable PLLs.Digital VLSI Design With Verilog is all an engineer needs for in-depth understanding of the verilog language: Syntax, synthesis semantics, simulation, and test. Complete solutions for the 27 labs are provided on the accompanying CD-ROM. For a reader with access to appropriate electronic design tools, all solutions can be developed, simulated, and synthesized as described in the book.A partial list of design topics includes design partitioning, hierarchy decomposition, safe coding styles, back-annotation, wrapper modules, concurrency, race conditions, assertion-based verification, clock synchronization, and design for test.Coverage of specific devices includes basic discussion and exercises on flip-flops, latches, combinational logic, muxes, counters, shift-registers, decoders, state machines, memories (including parityand ECC), FIFOs, and PLLs. Verilog specify blocks, with their path delays and timing checks, also are covered.

Circuit Design and Simulation with VHDL ReviewVery useful tools for VHDL programming. worth the money.
Every time I run into a problem on VHDL or quartus, I can find answers on this fantastic book! really usefulCircuit Design and Simulation with VHDL OverviewThis text offers a comprehensive treatment of VHDL and its applicationsto the design and simulation of real, industry-standard circuits. It focuses on theuse of VHDL rather than solely on the language, showing why and how certain types ofcircuits are inferred from the language constructs and how any of the foursimulation categories can be implemented. It makes a rigorous distinction betweenVHDL for synthesis and VHDL for simulation. The VHDL codes in all design examplesare complete, and circuit diagrams, physical synthesis in FPGAs, simulation results, and explanatory comments are included with the designs. The text reviews fundamentalconcepts of digital electronics and design and includes a series of appendixes thatoffer tutorials on important design tools including ISE, Quartus II, and ModelSim,as well as descriptions of programmable logic devices in which the designs areimplemented, the DE2 development board, standard VHDL packages, and other features. All four VHDL editions (1987, 1993, 2002, and 2008) are covered. This expandedsecond edition is the first textbook on VHDL to include a detailed analysis ofcircuit simulation with VHDL testbenches in all four categories (nonautomated, fullyautomated, functional, and timing simulations), accompanied by complete practicalexamples. Chapters 1--9 have been updated, with new design examples and new detailson such topics as data types and code statements. Chapter 10 is entirely new anddeals exclusively with simulation. Chapters 11--17 are also entirely new, presentingextended and advanced designs with theoretical and practical coverage of serial datacommunications circuits, video circuits, and other topics. There are many moreillustrations, and the exercises have been updated and their number more thandoubled.

VHDL: Analysis and Modeling of Digital Systems ReviewBackground info:
I have been an ASIC engineer since 1986. I have designed many ASICs in Verilog and VHDL. I have 7 books on VHDL including Dr. Navabi's text.
Some of the VHDL books out there are more like cookbooks: too many code examples and not enough explanation. Navabi's book is NOT a cookbook.
Further, it is hard to do a direct comparison to other VHDL texts. In a way it would be like comparing apples and oranges. While some VHDL texts try to explain everything about VHDL, other books like Dr. Navabi's explain the more useful parts of VHDL as being used by a digital systems or ASIC designers. While other books are mostly for RTL coders with very little testbench and system level modeling info. In my opinion, test is extremely important as well as modeling at the system level. Many books out there do not do a good job on those aspects. Most books provide very brief explanations of test benches and/or system level modeling.
This book is highly useful for a digital systems design engineer or architect. This book is not only covers coding for RTL synthesis but doing the testbenches, and sytem level modeling as well. This book has a very good balance between all the main uses of the VHDL modeling langauage.
Here is my overview of the chapters :
The first two chapters provides you with a history of modeling languages and the reason VHDL was created. I recommend that you read these chapters, especially if this is your first modeling language. The chapters are not long, but it provides a very good high level overview to modeling, synthesis, and test.
Chapter three gets you up and running quickly by providing simple examples to give you a good introduction to behavioral and structural VHDL.
Chapters 4 though 9 are heart of the VHDL aspect of the book.
Chapter 4 is very important. It describes VHDL inertial and concurrent timing in great detail. In fact, I believe Dr. Navabi's book is the best available in this aspect! It is important to understand for modeling and especially testing purposes. Chapter 5 is on structural VHDL. it is a good place to start since it is the easiest to understand. Chapter 6 introduces procedures, functions, packages, generics, and configurations. I like the way this chapter is written. Other books are not as easy to read as this one. Great examples and its clearly written as is the entire book actually. Chapter 7 digs into the VHDL types, operators, and attributes. Chapter 8 covers guarding and signal resolution. It also provides a good state machine example. Once you get through Chapter 8, pat yourself on the back because you got through the hard parts of VHDL! VHDL is a harder language to learn than Verilog. But for good reason, VHDL is much more powerful and structured than Verilog in my opinion. You can code faster in Verilog, but the code is not typically as readable as VHDL. Most of the VHDL codes I have seen are much more readable. Some of the Verilog code I have seen are downright nasty looking and time consuming to interpret. Chapter 9 starts to put it (chapters 6-8) all together by more thorough examples behavioral modeling: testbenches/harnesses, arbitration/handshaking, etc.
Chapters 10-11 puts it all together with some system examples : cpu, dma, system bus modeling/timing/interfacing, etc. even memory caches! These are not complicated examples but they are real world examples. All of the techniques are still begin used today. If they were more complicated examples the book would need to be much bigger. However, these are great examples that ties everything up. Once you complete chapter 11, you are well on your way! You will have accomplished something!
Don't overlook Chapters 12 (advanced modeling) and the appendices (esp. App. B, the synthesis subset). This additional information puts Navabi's book above other VHDL books in my opinion.
Conclusion:
It is difficult to create a VHDL book to be 'the' book for all types and levels of designers and engineers (architectural, RTL coders, testbench and verification, etc.) But, in my opinion this book comes closest. I highly recommend this book! I have many books on VHDL. This book is valuable to me as a reference and has helped me tremendously - it's a keeper! All the codes work and I only found one insignificant typo. I can not say that about any of my other VHDL books. In fact, I will probably soon be getting rid of some of my VHDL books to make space on my shelves for new books. I'll be keeping Navabi's VHDL book as a permanent reference- for sure! I recommend this book for beginners because I like the way it progresses and delivers the material: in the right order and in the right amount. I recommend this book for moer advanced people as well, I am sure that it has material that is not covered in other VHDL books. And it makes a great reference as well.
P.S.
There are recent additions to VHDL that are not discussed in this book..namely VHDL-AMS, which adds analog extentions. However, it is still very young and most simulators do not support the analog extentions yet.VHDL: Analysis and Modeling of Digital Systems OverviewThe definitive guide to VHDLÑnow updated with the new VHDL93 standard! Here's the new second edition of the authoritative reference engineers need to guide them through the use of VHDL hardware description language in the analysis, simulation, and modeling of complicated microelectronic circuits. The number and depth of its relevant and practical examples and problems is what sets this edition apart from other VHDL texts. It includes extensive new material to bring the guide fully up to date with the new VHDL93 standard, including new chapters on design flow, interfacing, modeling, and timing, as well as appendixes on logic synthesis and description styles.

Reconfigurable Computing: Accelerating Computation with Field-Programmable Gate Arrays ReviewFPGA-based reconfigurable computing may be the first fundamental innovation in computing since von Neumann's stored programs. Gokhale, one of the founders of the field, has written the first book I know of that summarizes current state of the art.
The book is brief and dense. It starts with introductory material about what FPGAs are and why they're good for some problems. The later chapters might not have full impact if you aren't already familair with FPGAs, though. Next, there's a short discussion of compilers. To tell the truth, state of the art right now is pretty grim, about where software tools were in the 1960s. Things like VHDL have tamed logic design, but computation is a very different beast. We need something different, something that isn't there yet - no matter what the inflated claims of the tool-builders.
The remainder of the book discusses application areas. The first two chapters in this section cover the classic FPGA computing applications - signal processing and image processing, both emerging from their niches in the defense market. The last three chapters cover network security, often an FPGA-based super-Snort, bioinformatics, and applications in heat transfer and road traffic analysis. Even though FPGA computing has largely been a research field rather than a production technology, it's still too big to cover in one book. Gokhale missed some interesting bioinformatics applications, such as microarray and regulatory network analysis, and other applications including electromagnetics, molecular dynamics, and astrophysical models. Still, shes has picked good representatives of the FPGA computing field.
Now that Silicon Graphics's RASC and Cray's XD1 add-on are on the market, we'll see a lot about FGPA-based computing. In a few years, when there are more tools and tool users in the field, this may look dated. For now, if you want to know about FPGA-based computing, you'll read the proceedings of the research conferences or you'll read this.

The Verilog® Hardware Description Language ReviewThis book should be used only by the experienced users that can filter out problematic sections.
Major problems:
- first chapter, "recommended" by authors for university courses, is extremely chaotic (begin..end blocks are called loops, exercises ask you to use loops before introducing them, etc.)
- cover of the latest edition claims coverage of the latest Verilog standard - unfortunately it is very poor coverage: new interesting features such as libraries and configurations are not mentioned at all!
- I had to work hard during many trainings to correct bad coding styles showing in students reading this book as their first Verilog publication
- the book is grossly overpriced...
Main advantage:
- good set of examplesThe Verilog® Hardware Description Language OverviewThis text presents the IEEE 1364-2001 standard of the Verilog language. The examples in this edition have been updated to illustrate the features of the language. A cross referenced guide to these features is provided, thus, designers already familiar with Verilog can quickly learn the features. Newcomers to the language can use it as a guide for reading "old" specifications. The book should prove to be a useful resource for engineers and students interested in describing, simulating and synthesizing digital systems. It is also ready for use in university courses, having been used for introductory logic design and simulation through advanced VLSI design courses. An appendix with tutorial help and a work-along style is keyed into the introduction for new students. Material supporting a computer-aided design course on the inner working of simulators is also included. "The Verilog TM Hardware Description Language" includes a CD containing Simucad's Silos TM 2001 Verilog Simulator, examples from the book and lecture slides. The simulator is limited in the size of descriptions it will simulate. A few of the language constructs are not recognized by this version of the simulator.

Embedded Systems Design with Platform FPGAs: Principles and Practices ReviewWith the current low costs and ubiquity of special purpose computing systems based upon embedded hardware, there is a significant need to educate engineers and others just getting into designing special purpose systems toward efficient and high quality designs of embedded hardware. I give this high-quality modern text top marks for describing and giving examples of the best practices in using Platform FPGA's (Field Programmable Gate Arrays used as the central component of an embedded computing system) in the design of systems appropriate to this implementation. I would have also liked to have better metrics for the novice designer to select between fixed instruction set commercial microprocessor and microcontroller solutions and custom embedded solutions based upon a FPGA.
As a text for the novice in designing Embedded Computing solutions with FPGA's and partitioning solutions between purchased IP-cores,
custom logic designed in a HDL and software, this text performs an excellent job in giving specific examples using Xilinx Platform FPGA's , VHDL logic specification, the GNU C Compiler and Linux-based development environments. It then generalizes each of these steps of FPGA development to allow the developer to use other FPGA development families, Verilog HDL or other development tools as they choose.
I would recommend this text highly as a means to getting into Embedded Systems Development with Platform FPGA's given only a basic background in software and computer architecture. It still must be supplemented with trade press articles or formal instruction in the metrics of when to choose an embedded solution based on standardized processor architectures and when to choose a customized (optimized) approach using Platform FPGA's.
--Ira Laefsky,MSE/MBA
IT & HCI Consultant & Reseacher formerly on the Senior Staff of Arthur D. Little, Inc and Digital Equipment CorporationEmbedded Systems Design with Platform FPGAs: Principles and Practices Overview
This book will introduce professional engineers and students alike to system development using Platform FPGAs. The focus is on embedded systems but it also serves as a general guide to building custom computing systems. The text describes the fundamental technology in terms of hardware, software, and a set of principles to guide the development of Platform FPGA systems. The goal is to show how to systematically and creatively apply these principles to the construction of application-specific embedded system architectures. There is a strong focus on using free and open source software to increase productivity.

The organization of each chapter in the book includes two parts. The white pages describe concepts, principles, and general knowledge. The gray pages include a technical rendition of the main issues of the chapter and show the concepts applied in practice. This includes step-by-step details for a specific development board and tool chain so that the reader can carry out the same steps on their own. Rather than try to demonstrate the concepts on a broad set of tools and boards, the text uses a single set of tools (Xilinx Platform Studio, Linux, and GNU) throughout and uses a single developer board (Xilinx ML-510) for the examples.

Explains how to use the Platform FPGA to meet complex design requirements and improve product performance
Presents both fundamental concepts together with pragmatic, step-by-step instructions for building a system on a Platform FPGA
Includes detailed case studies, extended real-world examples, and lab exercises

Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models, Second Edition ReviewThis book covers many facets of the task of creating testbenches. However, it doesn't seem to follow a very well thought out plan, and there are holes in the coverage.
Most of the book is a 'tips and tricks' coverage of how to get each language to do what it wasn't designed to do. He walks through various situations and says that something is easy to do in Specman (shows a short code fragment), but then goes into long detail in how to get around VHDL's limitations and get the same result. I realize these are probably pretty cool tricks, but not at all the approach for me (a beginner to writing sizable testbenches). If he kept up the coverage of all 4 languages throughout, it might be useful, but the focus shifts from language to language at whim. You won't learn how to write a testbench as much as you will learn some pitfalls to avoid.
One more gripe before I get to the parts I liked. Each chapter ends with a summary. The summary lists the author's favorite tricks, not a summary of the whole chapter. I found these to be not at all helpful in either deciding whether to read the chapter, or as a review of what was covered.
I did like the explanations of:
-- The importance of verification (now I know why I was hired)
-- Overview of all the lingo (I can sound like I know what I'm talking about now, even if I don't)
-- Merits of the various types of coverage (code/functional/transition ...)
-- Aspect Oriented Programming (e) and why it is useful (cool stuff!)
-- Using coverage to drive a random bench
That is only about 10% of the book, however. That 10% was really pretty good.
I see one of the other reviewers complained about lack of downloadable sourcecode. It is available at www.janick.bergeron.com/wtb along with an extensive errata list (I'd recommend taking the hour or so and marking up your book before reading).
I still give the book 3 stars, since it is the only verification book I've found, and I did really like parts of it. I read the book front to back, and would not particularly recommend this to others. Pick the parts that interest you, and skip the rest.Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models, Second Edition OverviewThe Second Edition of Writing Testbenches, Functional Verification of HDL Models presents the latest verification techniques to produce fully functional first silicon ASICs, systems-on-a-chip (SoC), boards and entire systems.Topics included in the new Second Edition: *Discussions on OpenVera and e; *Approaches for writing constrainable random stimulus generators; *Strategies for making testbenches self-checking; *A clear blueprint of a verification process that aims for first time success; *Recent advances in functional verification such as coverage-driven verification process; *VHDL and Verilog language semantics; *The semantics are presented in new verification-oriented languages;*Techniques for applying stimulus and monitoring the response of a design; *Behavioral modeling using non-synthesizeable constructs and coding style; *Updated for Verilog 2001.

Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog ReviewI consider this book to be a good VMM Reference.
Please don't mistake this to be a complete SystemVerilog Bible. This is Verification Methodology Manual (VMM), and after reading this book, it's not a bad idea to think if this methodology is the right one for your project.
This book outlines several "rules", "recommendations", "suggestions" and "alternatives" in using VMM for your project. I found these to be useful to a certain extent. Although the examples weren't quite informative. For starters I would also suggest reading general book on object oriented programming along with this book.************* BUYING THIS BOOK? If you happen to have complete VCS installed, you would get this book (pdf version) for FREE along with the VCS documentation. I came to know about this after buying this book. Any ways, it is good to have a hard copy.
Also, I found it useful to have other SystemVerilog books along with this one. It makes life easy to understand a (new) language and (new) methodology.
