ASTD Handbook for Workplace Learning Professionals ReviewPROS
(a) It's nice to have all this information in one place--and to have it in a definitive way.
(b) The voices are a mix of experience and academic know-how.
(c) The progression of the book seems about right for a basic to advanced set-up
CONS
(1) This is a collection of articles, so the connectivity, while attempted, is not thorough and leads to repeat information.
(2) The writing styles are vastly different and this is distracting.
(3) The job aids provided as tables are ironically difficult to follow at times.
(4) I know this book isn't a training, but it could use, at least, a (better) set of outcomes and outputs for the reader at the start.
(5) This collection is suited for those people who have a learning intelligence that is academic and reading-based.
(6) Ironically (hmm, a 2nd time), this book does not focus on application by the reader but instead on expertise of the writer--this makes for some of the writing to seem only practical to the unique situation or academic theory presented.ASTD Handbook for Workplace Learning Professionals OverviewAuthoritative, complete, and current, the ASTD Handbook for Workplace Learning Professionals is an easy-to-use, must-have reference tool for all learning professionals. Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance ReviewOnce again, Marc Rosenberg shows us the way to really transform our organizations into efficient, effective knowledge-centered enterprises. He warns that e-Learning, like training in general, is often done the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. He busts myths right and left (the section on "the myths of e-Learning" alone is worth the purchase price!), and steadfastly refuses to be swept along by fads, technologies -- or even traditions of training.
What Rosenberg does is to lay out a vision of the Smart Enterprise, in which the focus is on performers rather than learners. He argues persuasively that technologies such as e-Learning, classroom learning, knowledge management, communications and collaboration technologies are best viewed not as individual technologies (or fads), but rather as complementary parts of a balanced strategy for performance improvement in enterprises which effectively translate data to knowledge to information to performance. Detailed chapters then discuss each of the key components of this strategy for performance improvement, including practical advice on how to implement them and where the pitfalls are. Examples and issue sidebars featuring luminaries in the field and corporate success stories add weight to the argument.
This is not just another "business book of the month" full of quick-fix half-truths. It is a mature, broad and comprehensive view of what it really takes to make any knowledge-intensive organization get what it needs to reach its goals. Senior line organization managers will find it essential; training managers will find it liberating and exhilerating -- or threatening. It's required reading for everyone responsible for making their enterprises smart.Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance OverviewA follow-up to his best-selling E-Learning, Beyond E-Learning explains the most current thinking on how organizations learn and apply what they know to be successful, and explores the increasingly important role that technology plays, not as an end in itself but as a vital means to get there. The book also provides a clear path for helping to integrate learning—including e-learning—knowledge management, and performance support, and will help training professionals and the organizations they serve go beyond common myths and misconceptions about training and e-learning, focus training/learning activities directly on organizational know-how, and implement a framework that can (at last) be a catalyst for true organizational learning.

Communities that Learn, Lead, and Last: Building and Sustaining Educational Expertise ReviewThis book provide essential elements we need to consider when addressing the needs of our students and staff in today's schools. It's about bringing together all stakeholders into a Community for Learning. I highly recommend the book.Communities that Learn, Lead, and Last: Building and Sustaining Educational Expertise OverviewCommunities That Learn, Lead, and Last offers a fresh and compelling perspective while providing practical guidance for schools and districts on how to develop "professional learning communities" that serve to instill educational ideals, share wisdom, improve practice, and enhance capacity across the system. Comprised of any combination of teachers, school leaders, staff developers, district personnel, and even students, professional learning communities, as described in this book, break new ground and challenge the status quo by focusing on the reconciliation of individual and organizational expertise, vision, and needs through a variety of collaborations, activities and projects?ranging from classroom-related work to broader issues of policy, leadership, and organizational improvement. Depending on their needs, maturity, purpose, and membership, professional learning communities can be centered on learning, leading, or lasting. Showing how such communities can become the means for improving teaching and learning, as well as promote and sustain educational innovations, the book maps out the community-building essentials, providing guidance, tools, and carefully crafted rubrics.

e-Learning and the Science of Instruction: Proven Guidelines for Consumers and Designers of Multimedia Learning (Essential Knowledge Resource) ReviewAs someone who has been designing multimedia elearning programs since '95, I found this book simply the most useful book on this subject for anyone serious about getting multimedia learning right.
The book is full of references to well designed studies published in refereed jounals where the principles discussed were meticulously examined by learning researchers.
This is refreshing in a field where most books are anecdotes written by programmers (ala Michael Allen) or website designers. This book actually gives you design principles to follow to increase student learning while debunking many (too)popular theories about good design (such as the usefulness of extra tidbits of information, how to mix pictures and text, when to use audio in an animation, whether a self-playing presentation is better than one where the user clicks through, etc, whether all learners learn best from non-linear presentation, etc.).
I'd highly recomend this book to anyone serious about getting educational multimedia design and elearning right.e-Learning and the Science of Instruction: Proven Guidelines for Consumers and Designers of Multimedia Learning (Essential Knowledge Resource) Overview
