Handbook of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Assessment, Interventions, and Policy (Volume 2) ReviewI would not believe anything he writes because of his anti-science bias. For example, in his adolescent psychiatry book he presents alot of patent falsehoods on ME (CFS) that likely serve to retard the science and cause a great deal of iatrogenic morbidity.Handbook of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Assessment, Interventions, and Policy (Volume 2) OverviewThe second edition of the benchmark referenceSince its first edition, this handbook has become the most influential reference work in the field of autism and related conditions. Autism Spectrum Disorders : A Handbook for Parents and Professionals ReviewFirst, I agree the set is outrageously priced. However, the content of these books is EXCELLENT because the editors worked very hard on this project. I know them and they have dedicated their lives to helping children and families with autism--including MY family. No one was more shocked at the price of this two volume set than they were. I was also a contributor. Note: neither myself nor any other contributor was paid for their submission--we did it to HELP people. But $200 is outrageous, I agree. Save your dough! If you need suggestions for what books to buy email me!
If you want to buy the best quality books in the autism field at the most reasonable prices, stick to books from the Autism Asperger Publishing Company (AAPC) and avoid big publishers who don't care. Brenda Myles, one of the editors of this set, had written a book and the would-be publishers wanted to sell it for too much money so her husband, Keith Myles started the publishing company in order to sell it CHEAPER. The most important thing to both of them was that this information got out there in order to help these kids on the spectrum. AAPC started with that one book, Difficult Moments, and within six years became the second largest autism publishing company in the world. Buy your books from them because they really care about our families and understand our challenges, financial and otherwise. Among the many things AAPC does to help people is the free of charge online newsletter which you can download at www.asperger.net

Clinical Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) ReviewAlthough this work provides a diverse amount of information on clinical assessment and intervention for autism spectrum disorders, it contains several weaknesses that prevent it from being called a "cohesive textbook." After working as a special educator at the high school and community college levels for over twenty years, these shortcomings are readily apparent to me. First, this book is filled with repetitious information that appears over and over again as the reader sifts through pages and chapters. Second, since this is a compendium of different author styles and approaches, it is imperative that the editor, Johhny Matson, control this format and information provided in each chapter, so the reader is guaranteed a degree of consistency. This was not done. Merely putting a bunch of chapters together without an overall design leaves the reader confused and uninformed. I have seen several other books edited by Johhny Matson. They are on a variety of educational topics, and I wonder whether each has similar shortcomings like this work on autism. Third, there is an overuse of abbreviations in his book causing the reader to flip pages back and forth to follow information supplied by a certain writer. Despite my extensive knowledge in special education, I found this aspect interrupted the reading of pages.
For the above reasons, I would not recommend this "comprehensive textbook" on autism spectrum disorder. The reader can acquire pieces of relevant information from it; however, there are other books offered on Amazon that are far more informative and user-friendly. As I read this work, I found myself turning to the end of each chapter to find articles/books for increased knowledge. Going to the source is preferable than getting it "second hand" in a textbook.Clinical Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) OverviewAutism spectrum disorder has received increasing research in recent years, with more information on assessment and treatment than can be readily assimilated from primary literature by clinicians.Clinical Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders summarizes evidence-based assessments and intervention for Autism across the life-span, providing clinicians with a practical overview of how best to assess and treat this disorder. The book begins with a discussion of what warrants a determination of being "evidence based" and a description of the disorder from a life span perspective. The book also provides a chapter on differential diagnosis of autism relative to other disorders. What follows are separate sections on assessment and intervention. These chapters discuss first how to assess and then separately how to treat behavioral problems, communication and social skills issues, academic and vocational skills, and the use of pharmacology and an assessment of possible pharmacological effects.Intended for practitioners assessing and treating children with developmental delays, the book provides clinicians with best practices for assessing and treating delays associated with autism.* Covers the full range of Autism Spectrum Disorders* Covers the lifespan* Focuses on evidence-based asssessment and treatment

Wittgenstein's Ladder: Poetic Language and the Strangeness of the Ordinary ReviewThis is an engaging, down-to-earth book about the connections between Wittgenstein's aphoristic philosophy and some of the 20th-century writers who've followed his lead up the 'ladder of the ordinary.' Perloff's at her best with the close readings of difficult writers like Stein, Beckett and Creeley, who magically flower into comprehensibility under her sharp attention and good sense.
The authors she chooses to illustrate Wittgenstein's influence seemed a little arbitrary to me though. She admits that Beckett and Stein didn't read Wittgenstein, and that Wittgenstein would probably have disliked their art. So why put them 'under his sign'? It makes more sense to me to see Wittgenstein as part of a wider generation who felt dissatisfied with the pre-war language they'd inherited. With later poets like Silliman and Waldrop, who explicitly cite Wittgenstein's writings as an inspiration, I think Perloff misses what separates them from Wittgenstein: he had no earlier model to cite. Wittgenstein's faith in ordinary language led to a manner of writing and thinking that was largely self-sufficient--an interested reader can dive right in and think through the problems for herself. His more allusive postmodern heirs rely to a large extent on your prior knowledge of texts like Wittgenstein's for their effects. Where Wittgenstein himself struggled to keep his religious and hierarchical values in check through the discipline of ordinary language--concepts like beauty, God and the self seemed to have some meaning for him, you just couldn't talk about those meanings with language--later writers' easy acceptance of notions like a language game, the 'constructed self' and the fundamental indeterminacy of language seems to drain some of the drama from their writing. You don't feel the same struggle (or modesty) that you sense in Wittgenstein's open, user-friendly illustrations. Describing one of his poems, Ron Silliman writes: "Every sentence is supposed to remind the reader of his or her inability to respond." I can't imagine Wittgenstein saying something like that.
Still, the book is an interesting take on Wittgenstein and the poetic he unwittingly inspired. Well worth reading.Wittgenstein's Ladder: Poetic Language and the Strangeness of the Ordinary OverviewMarjorie Perloff, among our foremost critics of twentieth-century poetry, argues that Ludwig Wittgenstein provided writers with a radical new aesthetic, a key to recognizing the inescapable strangeness of ordinary language. Taking seriously Wittgenstein's remark that "philosophy ought really to be written only as a form of poetry," Perloff begins by discussing Wittgenstein the "poet." What we learn is that the poetics of everyday life is anything but banal."This book has the lucidity and the intelligence we have come to expect from Marjorie Perloff.—Linda Munk, American Literature"[Perloff] has brilliantly adapted Wittgenstein's conception of meaning and use to an analysis of contemporary language poetry."—Linda Voris, Boston Review"Wittgenstein's Ladder offers significant insights into the current state of poetry, literature, and literary study. Perloff emphasizes the vitality of reading and thinking about poetry, and the absolute necessity of pushing against the boundaries that define and limit our worlds."—David Clippinger, Chicago Review"Majorie Perloff has done more to illuminate our understanding of twentieth century poetic language than perhaps any other critic. . . . Entertaining, witty, and above all highly original."—Willard Bohn, Sub-Stance

Language Function: An Introduction to Pragmatic Assessment and Intervention for Higher Order Thinking and Better Literacy ReviewLanguage Function is a great resource for teachers and parents who are interested in understanding the learning process--or finding out what happens in the brain as people become literate. Arwood weaves her Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory throughout the book and provides numerous examples and case studies to assist the reader in gaining a thorough understanding of the learning process, which can be applied to practice both at home or in the classroom.
As a parent, Arwood's work helped me understand the way my son learns and has enabled me to provide the input and strategies he needs as a learner to continue to increase his language function for both academic and social learning.
As an elementary school teacher in a regular education classroom, I appreciate they way Arwood describes how her theory supports all students, including English language learners and students who have Attention Deficit Disorder. Language Function also includes two chapters that provide numerous examples of how both a primary teacher and a middle elementary teacher have successfully applied the theory in their regular education classrooms.
Finally, I think one of the most important contributions Language Function makes in the area of education is the idea that we, as educators, need to look at individual learners and focus on what they can do rather than on their deficits. With an understanding of the neurobiological process of acquiring concepts provided in Language Function, we can provide instruction that matches with the way our children and students learn best.
Language Function provides a wealth of information all parents and teachers should know. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with education or interested helping children learn and feel successful as learners.
Language Function: An Introduction to Pragmatic Assessment and Intervention for Higher Order Thinking and Better Literacy OverviewLiteracy teaching tends to take a structural approach to language, focusing on concepts such as sounds, morphemes, words, sentences, and vocabulary. However, new research suggests that the majority of English speakers actually think and learn in visual terms, and that there is a cultural and linguistic mismatch between language teaching and language learning. This has important implications for educators of students with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism. In her new book, Dr. Ellyn Arwood outlines a revolutionary new four-tiered model of how a learner acquires language, and suggests ways to impose visual language functions onto language in order to assist both neurotypical learners and those with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. Dr. Arwood provides tried-and-tested intervention strategies that can be used with such individuals at all levels, as well as tools for working effectively with those who think in terms of a visual, spatial, contextual kind of language. This book takes a fresh look at how language and literacy interact, and will be of interest to educators and special educators, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other professionals who support language learning and development.
