New Directions in Picturebook Research (Children's Literature and Culture) ReviewRoutledge makes a huge contribution to the debate on the importance of picturebook research. Unfortunately, the two books that I've purchased at Amazon (this one and "Postmodern Picturebooks") look like fake editions because of the cheap paper and the homemade look of the binding. Not what you expect from a $100 book!New Directions in Picturebook Research (Children's Literature and Culture) OverviewIn this new collection, children's literature scholars from twelve different countries contribute to the ongoing debate on the importance of picturebook research, focusing on aesthetic and cognitive aspects of picture books. Contributors take interdisciplinary approaches that integrate different disciplines such as literary studies, art history, linguistics, narratology, cognitive psychology, sociology, memory studies, and picture theory. Topics discussed include intervisuality, twist endings, autobiographical narration, and metaliterary awareness in picturebooks. The essays also examine the narrative challenges of first-person narratives, ellipsis, frame breaking, and mindscape as new paradigms in picturebook research. Tying picturebook studies to studies in childhood, multimodality, and literacy, this anthology is representative of the different opportunities for research in this emerging field.

Teaching Literacy in First Grade (Tools for Teaching Literacy Series) ReviewIf you are a new first grade teacher (like myself) and only read one book read this one. It is practical and has so many tips on making your classroom a literature rich environment. It truly has everything!Teaching Literacy in First Grade (Tools for Teaching Literacy Series) OverviewFirst grade is a year of important new experiences for students and teachers alike. Some students will arrive knowing how to read, others will know a few letters of the alphabet, and most will be somewhere in between. Including dozens of reproducibles, this book guides first-grade teachers in the many decisions they face about how to orchestrate effective, appropriate, and engaging instruction. A special strength of the book is the authors' deep understanding of the oral language base of literacy learning - both reading and writing - and their expertise in differentiating instruction for English language learners.

Developing Literacy in Preschool (Tools for Teaching Literacy) ReviewThis is another one of the professional books that I have been reading this summer that I recommend for teaching literacy. I attended a workshop on Intentional Teaching where the facilitator mentioned this book. It was written in 2007. The one thing I found invaluable is her ability to put you in the classroom. She also puts information on ELL and includes parent tips in each chapter. This is not Early Childhood 101 rehashed but a well researched book to up date your teaching tools. She includes assessments we can use in the classroom to check progress, pictures and strategies. I am learning something from each chapter thanks to the field research and her experience/training. The author, Dr. Lesley Mandel Morrow is a former reading specialist as well as classroom teacher. She is Chair of the Department of Learning and Teaching at Rutgers U Grad School of Education BUT her teachings are available to me and I live in the mid-west.Developing Literacy in Preschool (Tools for Teaching Literacy) OverviewPreschoolers are passionate about learning, and a high-quality preschool program offers rich learning experiences in the areas of language and literacy. This engaging book gives teachers and other professionals fresh ideas, inspiration, and practical tools for integrating age-appropriate literacy instruction into the preschool curriculum. Including helpful vignettes, sample lesson plans, and reproducibles, the book shows how to create a motivating classroom environment, balance child-initiated exploration with structured activities, and support students' developing skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Essential topics include preschool assessment and working with English language learners.

Teaching Literacy in Fourth Grade (Tools for Teaching Literacy) ReviewI am a fourth grade teacher and just finished my first year. I bought this book hoping it would have some specific lessons and ideas for teaching literacy to fourth graders that I could implement next year. This book seems more intended to be a college textbook. If you've taken college literacy classes in the last decade, you probably know most of the information in this book. Overall, I didn't think it was worth the money because of the lack of take-away strategies.Teaching Literacy in Fourth Grade (Tools for Teaching Literacy) OverviewFourth grade is a momentous year for literacy learning. Having left the primary grades behind, students must grapple with more demanding texts and content material--and effective, motivating instruction can help them succeed. This book helps teachers vanquish the dreaded "fourth-grade slump" by creating an energized and organized learning environment in which all students can improve their reading and writing strategies. Taking readers into the classroom of an exemplary fourth-grade teacher, the book includes useful assessment tools, differentiation techniques, minilessons, unit plans, reproducibles, and examples of student work. Special attention is given to meeting the challenges of high-stakes testing without sacrificing instructional quality.

Teaching Literacy through the Arts (Tools for Teaching Literacy) ReviewThis book is set up as a text book, with anticipatory guides, questions and activities for the reader to do. I was expecting a book with too many ideas, but instead this book is for those that aren't familiar with the arts or how to incorporate them into the classroom. There are better books out there, and this is more of a stroking of the authors' worth than anything else. I was very disappointed with this book.
If you have no clues about what art is or how to use it in your lessons, than this book is for you, but if you have any background using art at all, ignore this book.Teaching Literacy through the Arts (Tools for Teaching Literacy) OverviewAccessible and hands-on yet grounded in research, this book addresses the "whats," "whys," and "how-tos" of integrating literacy instruction and the arts in grades K-8. Even teachers without any arts background will gain the skills they need to bring music, drama, visual arts, and dance into their classrooms. Provided are a wealth of specific resources and activities that other teachers have successfully used to build students' oral language, concepts of print, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing, while also promoting creativity and self-expression. Special features include reproducible worksheets and checklists for developing, evaluating, and implementing arts-related lesson plans.
