Clinical Decision Support: The Road Ahead ReviewSomeone who wants to gain deep knowledge of the field of medical informatics -- a hot topic these days -- would do well to read this book. Thorough, well-written, insightful, and authored/edited by one of the founders of the field, I believe that this book belongs on the shelf of any practitioner.Clinical Decision Support: The Road Ahead OverviewThis book examines the nature of medical knowledge, how it is obtained, and how it can be used for decision support. It provides complete coverage of computational approaches to clinical decision-making. Chapters discuss data integration into healthcare information systems and delivery to point of care for providers, as well as facilitation of direct to consumer access. A case study section highlights critical lessons learned, while another portion of the work examines biostatistical methods including data mining, predictive modelling, and analysis. This book additionally addresses organizational, technical, and business challenges in order to successfully implement a computer-aided decision-making support system in healthcare delivery.

Biomedical Informatics: Computer Applications in Health Care and Biomedicine (Health Informatics) ReviewThis second edition of Shortliffe's textbook is an excellent overview of the field. Although I used it as a course text, it is extremely readable. The chapters are not overly technical, as befits an introductory text, but by no means is this a "Dummmies" book either.
There are now a variety of introductory/overview books on medical informatics. However, of the ones I've read (including van Bemmel's Handbook of Medical Informatics and Coiera's Guide to Medical Informatics), this book is by far the best.Biomedical Informatics: Computer Applications in Health Care and Biomedicine (Health Informatics) OverviewThis book focuses on the role of computers in the provision of medical services. It provides both a conceptual framework and a practical approach for the implementation and management of IT used to improve the delivery of health care. Inspired by a Stanford University training program, it fills the need for a high quality text in computers and medicine. It meets the growing demand by practitioners, researchers, and students for a comprehensive introduction to key topics in the field. Completely revised and expanded, this work includes several new chapters filled with brand new material.

Developing Literacy in Preschool (Tools for Teaching Literacy) ReviewThis is another one of the professional books that I have been reading this summer that I recommend for teaching literacy. I attended a workshop on Intentional Teaching where the facilitator mentioned this book. It was written in 2007. The one thing I found invaluable is her ability to put you in the classroom. She also puts information on ELL and includes parent tips in each chapter. This is not Early Childhood 101 rehashed but a well researched book to up date your teaching tools. She includes assessments we can use in the classroom to check progress, pictures and strategies. I am learning something from each chapter thanks to the field research and her experience/training. The author, Dr. Lesley Mandel Morrow is a former reading specialist as well as classroom teacher. She is Chair of the Department of Learning and Teaching at Rutgers U Grad School of Education BUT her teachings are available to me and I live in the mid-west.Developing Literacy in Preschool (Tools for Teaching Literacy) OverviewPreschoolers are passionate about learning, and a high-quality preschool program offers rich learning experiences in the areas of language and literacy. This engaging book gives teachers and other professionals fresh ideas, inspiration, and practical tools for integrating age-appropriate literacy instruction into the preschool curriculum. Including helpful vignettes, sample lesson plans, and reproducibles, the book shows how to create a motivating classroom environment, balance child-initiated exploration with structured activities, and support students' developing skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Essential topics include preschool assessment and working with English language learners.

IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) ReviewThis book is more of a general programming guide using IEC 61131-3. That's o.k. except the name implies an emphasis on industrial automation systems yet many of the examples in the book aren't examples of the typical IA system.
I was hoping for more of a detailed outline of each language in IEC 61131-3. I would have liked to have seen a composite list of each type of block available in FBD. Instead, this book uses examples of different aspects of each language and how you can leverage the power as a whole.
As a general programming book it's average. The authors try to convey what they feel is a better way to program but to each his own. It's not the way *I* program.
I don't see a real value in this book (especially for the price) because a person who is tasked to program in one of the IEC 1131 languages had better already have a good idea how to build code.IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) OverviewThis practical book gives a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and languages of the new standard IEC 61131 used to program industrial control systems. A summary of the special requirements in programming industrial automation systems and the corresponding features in the IEC 61131-3 standard makes it suitable for students as well as PLC experts. The material is presented in an easy-to-understand form using numerous examples, illustrations and summary tables. There is also a purchaser's guide and two CD-ROMs containing two reduced but functional versions of programming systems. These increase the value of the book for PLC programmers and for those in charge of purchasing software in industrial companies.

The Language of Physics: The Calculus and the Development of Theoretical Physics in Europe, 1750 - 1870 ReviewFor the first time Garber makes sense out of the threads which came together at the end of the nineteenth century to create modern theoretical physics.
Beginning in the late eighteenth century, scientists working on the development of differential and integral calculus showed how a group of bodies possessed invariant qualities such as kinetic energy, action, and potential energy.
Until Gerber's work, these scientists -- Bernoulli, Mayer, Lagrange, Laplace, Poisson, and Jacobi, among others -- were celebrated as doing great work in physics.
Their work did have consequences for physics, and implied quite a bit from the point of view of mathematical treatment of physical phenomena, but their intention had been to develop the boundaries of mathematics, specifically the differential equations of calculus.
Using detailed examples from not only mechanics but electromagnetism and thermodynamics as well, Garber revises the old-fashioned view of the development of theoretical physics, and proves how the work of a large number of her colleagues in the history of 18th- and 19th-century mathematics and physics supports her interpretation.
A major step forward in the history of science. The Language of Physics: The Calculus and the Development of Theoretical Physics in Europe, 1750 - 1870 OverviewThis work is the first explicit examination of the key role that mathematics has played in the development of theoretical physics and will undoubtedly challenge the more conventional accounts of its historical development. Although mathematics has long been regarded as the "language" of physics, the connections between these independent disciplines have been far more complex and intimate than previous narratives have shown. The author convincingly demonstrates that practices, methods, and language shaped the development of the field, and are a key to understanding the mergence of the modern academic discipline. Mathematicians and physicists, as well as historians of both disciplines, will find this provocative work of great interest.
