.NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewMy roommate loaned me this book because I was trying do do some UI automation where I work. This book had just what I needed and I had my automation running in 1 day when I was trying to get it to work for nearly a month before the book. If you want to know how to write reflection UI automation this book will help you a lot..NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) OverviewThis book presents practical techniques for writing lightweight software test automation in a .NET environment. If you develop, test, or manage .NET software, you should find this book very useful. Before .NET, writing test automation was often as difficult as writing the code for the application under test itself. With .NET, it is possible to write lightweight, custom test automation (small, dedicated test harness programs which are two pages of source code or less in length and take less than two hours to write) in a tiny fraction of the time it used to take. The emphasis of this book is on practical techniques that you can use immediately. This book is intended for software developers, testers, and managers who work with .NET technology who have a basic familiarity with .NET programming but does not make any particular assumptions about your skill level. The examples in this book have been successfully used in seminars and teaching environments where it has proven highly effective as a platform for students who are learning intermediate level .NET programming.

Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Vol. 2: Process Control and Optimization, 4th Edition ReviewThe first edition was published in 1969, the second edition was released in 1982 (Volume 1) and 1985 (Volume 2). This latest edition comprises over 3000 pages between the 2 volumes. Each volume includes 8 chapters with many sub-headings per chapter.
The Flow Measurement (29 sub-headins) and Analytical Instrumentation (60 sub-headings) chapters were heavily revised for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 1. PLC's & Other Logic Devices (10 subheadings), DCS & Computer-based Systems (16 sub-headings) and Process Control Systems (27 sub-headings) were largely rewritten for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 2. Within each product-oriented sub-heading (eg. Magnetic Flowmeters, Infrared Analyzers, DCS Basic Packages), in addition to extensive treatment of the applicable technology, a comprehesive listing of manufacturers and typical price ranges is provided. Under Process Control Systems, a diverse group of applications (Airhandler Controls, Clean Room Controls, Distillation Advanced Controls, Compressor Controls, Reactor Control & Optimation and many others) is profiled. Throughout this handbook, process control is treated in the time-domain to minimize mathematical complications implicit in frequency-domain analysis. Its focus is the practicding engineer and explains most control phoenomena visually.
Over 250 contributing authors are listed, including many prestigious names immediately recognizable by process control professionals. Liptak personally authored a substantial number of revised and up-dated easlier contribution of pioneering practitioners. This opus is a tour de force.
Liptak is a long-time industrial consultant, teaches a graduate course in advanced process control at Yale and writes the widely-followed Lessons Learned feature in CONTROL magazine. He has also lectured at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and been published on the editorial pages of the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Vol. 2: Process Control and Optimization, 4th Edition OverviewThe latest update to Bela Liptak's acclaimed "bible" of instrument engineering is now available. Retaining the format that made the previous editions bestsellers in their own right, the fourth edition of Process Control and Optimization continues the tradition of providing quick and easy access to highly practical information. The authors are practicing engineers, not theoretical people from academia, and their from-the-trenches advice has been repeatedly tested in real-life applications. Expanded coverage includes descriptions of overseas manufacturer's products and concepts, model-based optimization in control theory, new major inventions and innovations in control valves, and a full chapter devoted to safety. With more than 2000 graphs, figures, and tables, this all-inclusive encyclopedic volume replaces an entire library with one authoritative reference. The fourth edition brings the content of the previous editions completely up to date, incorporates the developments of the last decade, and broadens the horizons of the work from an American to a global perspective.
Béla G. Lipták speaks on Post-Oil Energy Technology on the AT&T Tech Channel.

Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice ReviewThis book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:
Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.
Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.
Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.
How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice OverviewA superior primer on software testing and quality assurance, from integration to execution and automation
This important new work fills the pressing need for a user-friendly text that aims to provide software engineers, software quality professionals, software developers, and students with the fundamental developments in testing theory and common testing practices.
Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice equips readers with a solid understanding of:
Practices that support the production of quality software
Software testing techniques
Life-cycle models for requirements, defects, test cases, and test results
Process models for units, integration, system, and acceptance testing
How to build test teams, including recruiting and retaining test engineers
Quality Models, Capability Maturity Model, Testing Maturity Model, and Test Process Improvement Model

Expertly balancing theory with practice, and complemented with an abundance of pedagogical tools, including test questions, examples, teaching suggestions, and chapter summaries, this book is a valuable, self-contained tool for professionals and an ideal introductory text for courses in software testing, quality assurance, and software engineering.

Modern Industrial Automation Software Design ReviewHonestly, I expected more of a book titled Modern Industrial Automation Software Design. Over half of the book focused on generally accepted practices for software development and the other half focused on case studies of existing systems most of which dealt with automated measurement. Avoid this book if you are interested in learning about software design for robotic equipment.Modern Industrial Automation Software Design Overview
The main subjects in this book relate to software development using cutting-edge technologies for real-world industrial automation applications
A hands-on approach to applying a wide variety of emerging technologies to modern industrial practice problems
Explains key concepts through clear examples, ranging from simple to more complex problem domains, and all based on real-world industrial problems

A Semantic Web Primer (Cooperative Information Systems series) Review
If you've read about the basics of the semantic web online, you won't get much more from this book. There's only 6 pages devoted to SPARQL, and no mention of RDFa. Later chapters (especially "Ontology Engineering") are thin and weak. You learn the dirt basics, but not how to build anything meaningful with it.A Semantic Web Primer (Cooperative Information Systems series) OverviewThe development of the Semantic Web, with machine-readable content, hasthe potential to revolutionize the World Wide Web and its use. A Semantic Web Primerprovides an introduction and guide to this still emerging field, describing its keyideas, languages, and technologies. Suitable for use as a textbook or for self-studyby professionals, it concentrates on undergraduate-level fundamental concepts andtechniques that will enable readers to proceed with building applications on theirown and includes exercises, project descriptions, and annotated references torelevant online materials. A Semantic Web Primer provides a systematic treatment ofthe different languages (XML, RDF, OWL, and rules) and technologies (explicitmetadata, ontologies, and logic and inference) that are central to Semantic Webdevelopment as well as such crucial related topics as ontology engineering andapplication scenarios. This substantially revised and updated second editionreflects recent developments in the field, covering new application areas and tools. The new material includes a discussion of such topics as SPARQL as the RDF querylanguage; OWL DLP and its interesting practical and theoretical properties; the SWRLlanguage (in the chapter on rules); OWL-S (on which the discussion of Web servicesis now based). The new final chapter considers the state of the art of the fieldtoday, captures ongoing discussions, and outlines the most challenging issues facingthe Semantic Web in the future. Supplementary materials, including slides, onlineversions of many of the code fragments in the book, and links to further reading, can be found at http://www.semanticwebprimer.org.Grigoris Antoniou is Professor atthe Institute for Computer Science, FORTH (Foundation for Research andTechnology-Hellas), Heraklion, Greece. Frank van Harmelen is Professor in theDepartment of Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, theNetherlands.

IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) ReviewThis book is more of a general programming guide using IEC 61131-3. That's o.k. except the name implies an emphasis on industrial automation systems yet many of the examples in the book aren't examples of the typical IA system.
I was hoping for more of a detailed outline of each language in IEC 61131-3. I would have liked to have seen a composite list of each type of block available in FBD. Instead, this book uses examples of different aspects of each language and how you can leverage the power as a whole.
As a general programming book it's average. The authors try to convey what they feel is a better way to program but to each his own. It's not the way *I* program.
I don't see a real value in this book (especially for the price) because a person who is tasked to program in one of the IEC 1131 languages had better already have a good idea how to build code.IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) OverviewThis practical book gives a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and languages of the new standard IEC 61131 used to program industrial control systems. A summary of the special requirements in programming industrial automation systems and the corresponding features in the IEC 61131-3 standard makes it suitable for students as well as PLC experts. The material is presented in an easy-to-understand form using numerous examples, illustrations and summary tables. There is also a purchaser's guide and two CD-ROMs containing two reduced but functional versions of programming systems. These increase the value of the book for PLC programmers and for those in charge of purchasing software in industrial companies.
