Quality Function Deployment: How to Make QFD Work for You ReviewI am (among other things) a recognized QFD "Subject Matter Expert" within Xerox Corp. I've read any number of QFD books and academic papers on the topic, and lead/facilitated several major QFD projects. Cohen's book best mirrors my own experiences in using QFD effectively, and is the book I most often recommend to someone who is new to QFD but wants to actually use the process. Cohen plainly has considerable experience in actually using QFD, and clearly shares his own experiences, from the mundane (not counting on computer display tools in meetings) to the sublime (the use and importance of contextual inquiry; the importance of personality mix in the QFD team selection). Cohen's writing style is excellent - very readable, even entertaining, but always clear and informative. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:
Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.
Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.
Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.
How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult.
