This is a superb book reconciling the often conflicting dimensions of the writing process--public vs. private, high-stakes vs. low-stakes writing, freewriting vs. crafted writing, etc.--so much so that it has virtually eliminated my 15-year-old case of writer's block. Despite its scholarly appearance, this is a supremely *practical* book on the writing process, that attempts to lower the stakes and make writing accessible to all of us, while simultaneously cultivating the ground for excellent writing and thinking. The Glamour of Grammar: A Guide to the Magic and Mystery of Practical English ReviewSo, what do you think about when you hear the word "grammar"? As a kid, I would think "Uh oh; I guess I wrote something wrong again." As a young adult I'd say, "Hey, that's just the way I speak." As an Englishwoman moving to America I'd groan that it's not just the spellings that are different here but the grammar rules as well. And after reading this book I'd say, "Wow!"
So, what about my punctuation above? Why did I put that question mark outside the quotes when the exclamation point went inside at the end of the paragraph? I'd often wondered how to punctuate quotes, and since I want to be a writer, I'd often thought I really ought to learn. At last I have.
Clark's book starts by pointing out that "glamour" and "grammar" come from the same root. I guess is makes sense. After all, we "spell" words correctly or otherwise, and wizards cast "spells." Grammar's just the next step.
I used to teach chess, and I'd explain to the kids that there are two types of rules. Some have to be obeyed (pawns move forwards for example), or else you're not playing chess. Others are there to be understood and used judiciously (such as "Don't get your queen out too soon") to set or avoid falling into traps. Once you know the rules, you know what it means when they're broken.
Spelling's probably the first sort of rule, and Clark includes a chapter on how meanings can change where the wrong spelling or wrong word is used. Suddenly you're not saying what you thought; your reader's dragged out of the writing; you're not playing the same game. But other grammar rules can be judiciously broken. We just have to know what we're doing and why--be prepared for what the reader will see, and be ready to make sure it's what we intend.
Clark's chapters are written with delightful style, great voice, amazing examples, and just pure fun. (Yes, grammar can be fun!) There's advice for aspiring writers that any of us could use--the value of the well-chosen long or short word, the nuances of sound or foreign phrase, the alliteration of short and long sentences... And then there are chapter endings with quick and easily read "Keepsakes." There he might emphasize a point, help the reader practice a technique, or simply list the rules. (That's how I learned how to punctuate my first paragraph.)
Clark doesn't want to regiment our writing. He acknowledges how different countries (UK and US for example), industries (newspaper vs book), and even publishers have their own chosen styles. Obey the rules of your intended audience he says. But then he frees us to shift those chess pieces round and win the game.
Is grammar glamorous? It certainly is now. I love this book, and I'd recommend that everyone who loves reading or writing really should read it. I can hardly believe how lucky I was to get a copy to review--you'll hardly believe how lucky you are if you get your own copy too. And, just for reference, since Roy Peter Clark is vice president and senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, I have no qualms about trusting him to give me, and you, the right facts.

The Linguistics Student's Handbook ReviewLaurie Bauer's THE LINGUISTICS STUDENT'S HANDBOOK is a compendium of information for those entering this academic pursuit that traditional textbooks don't explain so clearly. When I entered linguistics, I slowly learnt how to interpret the algebraic representation of sound change laws and syntax trees, how to write bibliographies, and glossing rules as I went along. Bauer presents all these little details in one handy book for the beginning undergraduate. Even I learned some new things here, such as the existence of Dania phonetic symbols and how some IPA symbols have been superseded.
The entire second half of the book is the "Language File", a listing of 280 languages that a student is likely to encounter in linguistics works. Now, this material can be useful in that each entry lists some of the noteworthy typological properties of the language, but I suspect that when many students encounter a language they're not familiar with, they'll be more comfortable just doing a Google search and winding up at Ethnologue or Wikipedia. Sadly, if it weren't for the Language File, than Bauer's work could have been a cheap pamphlet accessible to anyone. As it is, the book has been published at the full rate of a university press. I therefore can't really recommend it except to people who don't really worry about their budgets (and most undergraduates do fret about money).The Linguistics Student's Handbook OverviewThe book that tells you all the things you felt you were expected to know about linguistics, but were afraid to ask about. *What do you know about Burushaski and Miwok? *What's the difference between paradigmatic and syntagmatic? *What is E-language? *What is a language? *Do parenthetical and non-restrictive mean the same thing? *How do you write a bibiliographic entry for a work you have not seen? Part reference work, part revision guide, and with tables providing summary information on some 280 languages, the book provides a new learning tool as a supplement to the usual textbooks and glossaries.

More extensive than Steven Stark's, more engaging than Garner's, Goldstein and Lieberman's book is my first choice for any lawyer seeking to become a competent writer. Part III, the longest part of the book is entitled, "Making Your Prose Serviceable," the part one must read. But particularly worthy is the Part following, "Making Your Prose Memorable." Even though few of us will ever attain that goal, it's worth trying. I can't think of another book in the genre suggesting such a lofty purpose. It's also a lot of fun to read. As someone who cares deeply about "getting it down right," it's a great relief to know there are people out there whose job it is to pay attention to how our language is evolving (or not), especially in this age of computerese and political correctness. Wallraff manages to impart a wealth of useful information with a light, witty touch. She seems to answer almost every frustrating question I've ever had about English. Word Court is essential if your craft is writing, or even if you merely enjoy thinking about language. The book has earned a spot on my shelf, right next to the old classics like Fowler and Strunk & White. Aliens and Alien Societies (Science Fiction Writing Series) ReviewThis is a good overview of the basics of realistic SF aliens. However, I found it a bit too basic, and wished for more specifics. But the subject matter is just so broad and protean that anything more than a general overview like this would be very hard to achieve. Perhaps the most valuable portion of the book is its bibliography, referring the reader to numerous fiction and nonfiction works offering more detail. In many ways, this is as much a guide to the mechanics of writing about aliens as to the physics, psychology etc. of designing them, and it contains some good insights. I found the chapter on alien languages pretty interesting. Overall, it's certainly a useful reference, though I'm sure that supplementing it with works from the bibliography is necessary to get a fuller picture.Aliens and Alien Societies (Science Fiction Writing Series) OverviewTeaches writers how to use real scientific knowledge of our universe to create more convincing extraterrestrial life forms in their science fiction or fantasy novel.

A Better Pencil: Readers, Writers, and the Digital Revolution ReviewA slim book, but not an easy read. Lots of repetition of ideas and content, as if the book had been written as separate essays and then stitched together without the aid of a good editor. He goes off on tangents within chapters which often had me re-reading pages to see if I had missed a transition.
Pitched as a book about how people have reacted to and adopted new communication technologies, it is really more a light historical overview of the topic. Disappointing. If you like technology and history you've already read most of this book elsewhere. Lots of rehashing of Petroski's book on the pencil and on Thoreau. Chapters on handwriting and Wordstar don't really add much. The last few chapters begin to get at what I thought the book was about -- how people react to and adopt new writing/communication technologies. The illustrations are also not the best, although some are at least interesting. The early Photoshop ad showing Marilyn Monroe holding Abraham Lincoln's arm is something I had not seen before.
If you haven't any background in the history of technology and want a very brief overview, this might be of interest. For me there are better sources and better edited books written in a more engaging style.I expected a lot more than I got.A Better Pencil: Readers, Writers, and the Digital Revolution OverviewComputers, now the writer's tool of choice, are still blamed by skeptics for a variety of ills, from speeding writing up to the point of recklessness, to complicating or trivializing the writing process, to destroying the English language itself. A Better Pencil puts our complex, still-evolving hate-love relationship with computers and the internet into perspective, describing how the digital revolution influences our reading and writing practices, and how the latest technologies differ from what came before. The book explores our use of computers as writing tools in light of the history of communication technology, a history of how we love, fear, and actually use our writing technologies--not just computers, but also typewriters, pencils, and clay tablets. Dennis Baron shows that virtually all writing implements--and even writing itself--were greeted at first with anxiety and outrage: the printing press disrupted the "almost spiritual connection" between the writer and the page; the typewriter was "impersonal and noisy" and would "destroy the art of handwriting."Both pencils and computers were created for tasks that had nothing to do with writing. Pencils, crafted by woodworkers for marking up their boards, were quickly repurposed by writers and artists. The computer crunched numbers, not words, until writers saw it as the next writing machine. Baron also explores the new genres that the computer has launched: email, the instant message, the web page, the blog, social-networking pages like MySpace and Facebook, and communally-generated texts like Wikipedia and the Urban Dictionary, not to mention YouTube.Here then is a fascinating history of our tangled dealings with a wide range of writing instruments, from ancient papyrus to the modern laptop. With dozens of illustrations and many colorful anecdotes, the book will enthrall anyone interested in language, literacy, or writing.

The most useful book on dramatic writing I've come across--including Syd Field and Lajos Egri. It's perfect for experienced writers looking for exercises and analytical tools to help with rewrites; but it's also ideal for anyone first learning the craft. It can be used as either a how-to book, or a reference manual. My favorite feature is a troubleshooting guide at the end called "Fixing Common Script Problems." Each section gives you the problem ("Not enough conflict," "Main character too passive,"etc.), suggests how to approach it, then points to exercises in the book to help fix it. That section alone is worth the price of the book! The key to communication is to place yourself in the listener's situation and understand his or her deepest thoughts and beliefs. What the listener perceives constitutes the listener's reality.
Based on his experience as a political and corporate pollster he recommends 11 rules for effective communication:

I attended a workshop on Intentional Teaching where the facilitator mentioned this book. It was written in 2007. The one thing I found invaluable is her ability to put you in the classroom. She also puts information on ELL and includes parent tips in each chapter. This is not Early Childhood 101 rehashed but a well researched book to up date your teaching tools. She includes assessments we can use in the classroom to check progress, pictures and strategies. I am learning something from each chapter thanks to the field research and her experience/training. The author, Dr. Lesley Mandel Morrow is a former reading specialist as well as classroom teacher. She is Chair of the Department of Learning and Teaching at Rutgers U Grad School of Education BUT her teachings are available to me and I live in the mid-west.Developing Literacy in Preschool (Tools for Teaching Literacy) OverviewPreschoolers are passionate about learning, and a high-quality preschool program offers rich learning experiences in the areas of language and literacy. I was expecting a book with too many ideas, but instead this book is for those that aren't familiar with the arts or how to incorporate them into the classroom. There are better books out there, and this is more of a stroking of the authors' worth than anything else. I was very disappointed with this book.

Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer ReviewRoy Peter Clark invites aspiring writers "to imagine the act of writing less as a special talent and more as a purposeful craft." In his "Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer," Clark urges the reader to "think of writing as carpentry, and consider this book your toolbox." The goal is to take away the fright and nausea that accompanies writer's block, and to make every writer more proficient at expressing himself.
Clark divides his book into four sections: "Nuts and Bolts," "Special Effects," "Blueprints," and "Useful Habits." Within these divisions, the author clearly and concisely presents his tools; he also includes excerpts from the works of outstanding writers to illustrate each point. For instance, Tool 22 is "Climb up and down the ladder of abstraction." The writer should know when to use concrete examples and when to reach for "higher meaning." Avoid the treacherous middle rungs of the ladder where "bureaucracy and technocracy lurk," and where euphemisms and meaningless phrases abound. Clark cites Updike and a baseball writer named Thomas Boswell to show the reader how it's done. Tool 38 exhorts us to "Prefer archetypes to stereotypes." We should beware of heavy-handed symbols and strive for subtlety. Although it is tempting to fall back on familiar phrases and well-worn ideas, a writer should aspire to cultivate his own distinctive voice. To get his message across, Clark cites a passage from James Joyce's tale "The Dead." Each tool is followed by a "workshop," with several practice exercises.
Some of the tools mentioned in this book are far from unique--most writing handbooks encourage us to make every word count and vary sentence length--but there are a few noteworthy tips that stand out. For example, Clark discusses how to "establish a pattern, then give it a twist," and how to "mix narrative modes" using the broken line technique. A clever writer knows when to move his lens back to broaden his perspective and when to zoom in for a close-up on his subject.
There is no shortage of excellent books on the art of writing. Along with "On Writing Well," by William Zinsser, and Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," I recommend "Spunk and Bite," by Arthur Plotnik, "How Not to Write," by Wiliam Safire, and "A Dash of Style," by Noah Lukeman.
