The Electrical Engineering Handbook (AP Series in Engineering) ReviewIn my opinion, a good handbook should begin each subject treated with a clear elementary introduction suitable for nonspecialists, and continue to include a collection of tables, diagrams, and formulas to aid the specialist.
The introductions are sometimes incomplete and misleading. The specialist will usually not find the reference material normally expected in handbooks.
It is an attractively printed volume and generally quite readable. The global plan is generally quite good, and one can hope that this work will be allowed to mature in future revisions.

From Gutenberg to Google: Electronic Representations of Literary Texts ReviewWhen you start the introduction of this book the author talks about the thoughts he was having as he stood in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany. I had exactly the same thoughts. Gutenberg caused a revolution that led to our modern society. The move to electronic texts is no less dramatic. Although if you talk with the attendents in the Gutenberg museum they don't see any threat at all to the continued dominance of the printed page. And as I look at the amount of paper produced in my own office, I see a certain justification for their view.
In this book Dr. Shillingsburg takes a hard and critical view of the current state of electronic publishing. He talks primarily about scholastic publishing. Where books need to be carefully reviewed during the publishing process. And there is no question about his conclusion that the definitive concepts of electronic publishing simply aren't here yet. It is important to remember, however, that printed publishing has had almost six hundred years to get to its present state, and the whole concept of electronic publishing is only a handful of years old.

However, those of us familiar with the costs of legal texts I am certain will understand my motivation. The edition I received from bookseller "oilpainter13" was a 20 year old text!! 8th Edition, NOT 9th Edition as advertised by Amazon. While the references and principles cited are obviously sound (after all, they're citing law) THEY ARE CONSPICUOUSLY DATED. My two stars are for the text itself in spite of its age. Because if this book is used in the proper way, in fact it will contribute greatly to your understanding of the bible. It would be unwise to depreciate this excellent work. The only thing preventing it from being a 5 star book is the overall presentation. The writing style is very dry and somewhat redundant. Strictly English: The Correct Way to Write . . . And Why It Matters ReviewSimon Heffer has written a book that everyone who speaks and writes English ought to read, if not to improve his facility with the language, to enjoy the wit and charm of the book. This is an instruction book that does not read like one. He first tells us what the rules are, and then explains the purpose of those rules as well as the right and wrong ways of applying them. For example, he wrote: "Punctuation is not merely for the ease of reading, but also for the ease of comprehension and the avoidance of ambiguity. If used correctly, it shows the reader how clauses in a sentence relate to each other; how sentences are delineated; and how an argument or exposition is broken up into paragraphs." (p.31) and that grammar "is a question of logic, and if regarded as such it will, all but the most resolutely illogical minds, become second nature in anyone's use of English. Grammar is designed to keep our language comprehensible and free from ambiguity." (p.45)
He has a chapter on the use of the wrong word (in which he points out the result of dishonesty in the use of the wrong word) and another on the wrong tone. The highlight of the book may be his chapter on "The Essence of Good Style", but I enjoyed the two chapters that that was wittily placed between - "Three Sinners" (state officials, academics, and lawyers and their verbose and obscure style of writing) and "Three Saints (George Orwell, Barbara Pym, and Enoch Powell). Every one of the 309 pages in this book is a joy to read.Strictly English: The Correct Way to Write . . . And Why It Matters OverviewSimon Heffer's incisive and amusingly despairing emails to colleagues at the Telegraph about grammatical mistakes and stylistic slips have attracted a growing band of ardent fans over recent years. Now, he makes an impassioned case for correct English and offers practical advice on how to avoid the solecisms and mangled sentences that increasingly pepper everyday speech and writing. Do's and Taboos of Using English Around The World ReviewAxtell's capsule treatments of various cultures are too superficial for all but the most oblivious travelers. In his attempt to include a multitude of countries and customs, nothing gets decent coverage. Though it's doubtful anyone would expect a book about using English to serve as a foreign-language phrasebook, the brief appendix tries to do just that, contributing to the book's scattershot feel.
The Church Lady seems to have ghostwritten five pages of Chapter 5, where we are informed of the Canadians' "special heritage," Quebecers' "special pride in their ethnic heritage," and Australians' "special brand of coined and abbreviated words," not to mention their "special brand of lingo."
This book is for you if you're an after-dinner speaker who needs cute anecdotes about language and cultural snafus, or if lists of misstatements like "Our Father who art in heaven, Howard be thy name," send you into convulsions of laughter. Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary ReviewComprehensive, well illustrated, and written to be understood by children aged 9 - 12. The definitions of most words searched have been easily understood by my nine year old son. Some definitions have necessitated my participation to provide a more simplified explanation. A further noted weakness of the dictionary is that a significant number of words fail to provide an example of its use in a sentence. A more consistent usage of this feature would have resulted in a 5 star rating. These faults, however, are minor and should not deter the reader from purchasing this dictionary. Some noteworthy unexpected strengths of the dictionary was the inclusion of a reference section containing maps of the world and seven continents, illustrations of the flags of the world, a list of the 50 states and their capitals, and a listing of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the United States.
