Systems Analysis and Design (Shelly Cashman) ReviewThe book is easy to read and understand, but it is supposed to come with a printed access card to allow access to additional resources on the website. My book was missing this card. There was nothing in the description while ordering the book to indicate that this item was needed.
Back to the book... it is clear and concise with good examples. Some things are a bit wrong or impractical for real-world use, but it is acceptable for providing an overview for a beginner.Systems Analysis and Design (Shelly Cashman) OverviewSYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN, NINTH EDITION offers a practical, visually appealing approach to information systems development.

Project Requirements: A Guide to Best Practices ReviewA book search on "requirements" gets 10,000 hits; "project management" gets 3,000 more. So why this one? I used Young's previous requirements books - Effective Requirements Practices (what to do) and Requirements Engineering Handbook (how to do it) - to good effect earlier in my career as a software developer, so I was interested to see what he has to offer me now in my role as a Project Manager. I was pleased to find this book gives practical, actionable guidance across the spectrum of things a PM must worry about (mostly requirements related, but even a bit beyond) in a complete yet concise way. A key "take-away" from the book is steps to mitigate my two biggest requirements issues: having the REAL requirements identified early on, and maintaining control on requirements changes/additions during the life of my projects.
Compared against the Robertsons' popular "Requirements-Led Project Management," I found this book easier to read & to apply - with specific stuff you can use directly, things like a requirements-related project start-up checklist, requirements products to plan for, and a skills matrix to help you select (or grow) competent requirements manager/analysts for your project. This book manages to cover the waterfront while remaining concise (200 pp plus appendices). Wieger's "Software Requirements" is a classic reference, for example, but it's 500 pages that I don't have time to wade through; the best of Wieger's PM stuff is included here in an appendix. I particularly like the way key ideas are set off in boldface with distinctive dividers - you can get the jist of the book just by flipping pages and reading the callouts, and it helps when you go back to look for something, too.
Like Young's ERP & REH books, this one includes a couple of sections and many sidebars contributed by other luminaries, from both the US and the UK. Appendix A is Palmer's excellent paper on how to do Traceability; Appendix B is a humorous and compelling piece by Neal Whitten on "minimum requirements." Some of the best practices take a broad view of what is related to "requirements" -- the chapter on the PM's role in Quality by Dan Baker provides the best succinct description I've read of what "quality" should be on a project and how QA can make a real contribution; Stephen Waddell adds a terrific summation of Risk Management best practices in a chapter on Requirements and Risk.
The included Index isn't as comprehensive as I'd like, but the very thorough Table of Contents makes up for that somewhat -- and there's a very extensive list of references and links. In addition to the topics mentioned above, there are chapters on Key Requirements Success Factors, Partnering, Teamwork, Coaching, Communication, Process Discipline vs. Agility, Continuous Improvement, and Suggested Implementation Steps.
All in all, this is a very pithy, self-contained book to increase your effectiveness as PM and improve the management of your project. If you have the time (you must not be a PM :-), there are lots of other good, specific requirements books. If you're busy, spending just a little time with this one helps to ensure you're doing the things that are known to foster project success.Project Requirements: A Guide to Best Practices Overview"Project Requirements: A Guide to Best Practices" gives project managers tools they can assimilate and apply easily to improve project success rates, reduce development costs, reduce rework, and accelerate time to market. Based on experience and best practices, this valuable reference will help you: clarify real requirements before you initiate project work; improve management of project requirements; save time and effort; manage to your schedule; improve the quality of deliverables; and, increase customer satisfaction and drive repeat business.

Leading Global Projects Review"Leading Global Projects" is a comprehensive guide when you need to coordinate activities with participants scattered in multiple locations. The authors use of real-world anecdotes coupled with practical templates and "how to's" make this an indispensable resource for our increasingly interconnected global workplace.
Leading Global Projects OverviewThis book is a must-read for anyone responsible for projects and initiatives that span functional and geographical divides.Authors Moran and Youngdahl bring extensive experience and learning from industry practice to present a clear and straightforward treatment of the leadership skills and knowledge required to lead projects that are global in nature. They have written the first book of its kind to address the three essential skills of global project leaders - strategic project management, project leadership, and cross-cultural leadership. The authors argue that global project leadership is an essential skill in our project-based world and that we are all either intentional or accidental project leaders. Intentional project leaders pursue formal project management education and even certification whereas accidental project leaders find themselves leading global project and initiatives as a result of a special assignment or promotion.Moran and Youndahl have found that the vast majority of global projects leaders fall into the accidental category and have written the book to be accessible to those who have not necessarily pursued formal project management education.Experienced intentional project managers can skip the single chapter on project management fundamentals to move to the more advanced chapters addressing topics such as influencing without formal authority across functional and geographical boundaries and leading global projects at the edge of crisis. . The only book that combines themes of strategic project management, project leadership and cross-cultural leadership . Rich with examples and stories to illustrate key skills and knowledge required to lead global projects*Only book to focus on leadership and cross-cultural skills in global project management*Robert Moran is well-known author in these fields*Book is designed for easy use in executive education courses

Creating a Culture of Competence ReviewThe book contains numerous bits and pieces of advice, insights, and analyses on how to handle personal competencies, a person乫s traits and characteristics that help the individual become successful at performing their jobs. It is particularly useful with the tools and guidelines derived from the author乫s experience in the field of human resource management, i.e. headhunting.
It fails to provide any integrated view of how these ideas can be leveraged to create an organizational competence. For example, there is a very brief discussion of whether competency assessment should be linked to compensation, with a general list of pros and cons, and the answer is, 乬it depends on the organisation.乭 To adequately deal with this issue, we need at least a minimum understanding of the value of a 乬culture of competence乭 against those of alternative corporate cultures that place less emphasis on personal competencies than on other factors such as management control, cooperation, and competition.
I recommend the book for those seeking a practical understanding of personal competency management, but not for those seeking to 乬create a culture of competence.乭 The book only partially delivers on its stated promise, but remains useful for the hands-on guidance it contains.Creating a Culture of Competence OverviewCompetence-and its role in achieving peak performance-remains one of the hot issues in business today. Yet it's not enough for individual leaders, managers, and employees to demonstrate personal competencies. Rather, an entire organization must be unified to create a culture of competence. This culture can then be passed along to succeeding generations of employees who will continue to contribute to, and strengthen, a company's future. In Creating a Culture of Competence, Michael Zwell provides a bold, prescriptive approach to achieving organizational success through improved individual and group job performance and satisfaction. He clearly defines those core qualities that lead to peak performance, then illustrates, step-by-step, how companies can identify and develop individual leadership, managerial, and employee competencies for maximum personal and organizational benefit.Based on years of personal experience and research, Creating a Culture of Competence expertly combines behavioral theory with solid business practice to create positive organizational change. You'll discover how to:* Use vision and competencies for cultural transformation* Create competency models* Implement competencies in selection and performance managementYou'll learn what really makes an organization successful . . . understand how HR's role is becoming central to building a high-performance organization . . . find out what technologies are being used to change corporate culture . . . then combine these elements to create a highly effective, competency-based organizational strategy.Creating a Culture of Competence offers a blueprint for hiring, developing, and retaining a superior workforce. By encouraging individuals to realize their potential, then motivating them to work in concert, you can lead your organization to reach its objectives . . . and get superior business results.

Where in the World is My Team: Making a Success of Your Virtual Global Workplace ReviewBut did I? I just finished reading Terence Brake's book, "Where in the World is my Team?". I was intrigued by the reviews saying it was not a regular business book, and of course the topic of virtual teams, so I decided to pick it up.

If you are not familiar with this book, indeed, it is not like usual business books in that there are actually points in it that will make anyone laugh. At the beginning, we are introduced to Will Williams, the new assistant to the CEO at a gaming company, The Fun House. He is working in London, but there is a whole host of characters all over the world, with whom Will interacts. Will is tasked by his CEO, to put together a Briefing Report on the new workplace, working virtually, technologies that aid the new workplace, etc., for her upcoming TV appearance. The readers "learn" along with Will, as he wades in to the new workplace.

The set up having to go through Will's introduction in to working with virtual teams is a bit much, having to go through each of his meetings, and his personal feelings on meeting with his ex-girlfriend or the "interesting" analyst, whose work Will never bothered to read, dealing with his parents, his new love, etc. But you really can't skip any part of the book. The dialogue of a relevant conference call talking about ways to improve communication in virtual teams may be between a few paragraphs about the crazy analyst or Will's colleague in the next cubicle. You can certainly skim those parts though. By doing it in real world fashion though, every reader, who has worked in global virtual teams will recognize similar mistakes they have made as they have learned to work with virtual teams.

Many of the points made in the book, building virtual trust, communication, etc., have been stated in other books, but I do like the diagrams that are used to show the different points. For example the Collaboration Controller is good. I also like the diagram on pg. 25 on virtual trust and its different aspects.

Some of my favorite points include:

- Being in a virtual team, and especially leading one, means communicating when you don't have to - not just when you want something from someone. Only when you want something makes it very shallow relationship. Do you know anything else about them?
- Also under process I like the emphasis on the transition from establishing a relationship to going in to the task. The delicate balance between these two processes - of course I did not see in the book any details about how to actually do this transition.
- Working in isolation, means less communication which builds paranoia, people get anxious. Which I have talked about many times.
- The confusion caused by vague communication, lack of transparency, etc.
* I like the example given - an American to a Brit - "I created a "straw man" agenda for the upcoming meeting, and I have a "hard stop", at 3:00pm". What does that mean? Writing something like, "I created a preliminary agenda for the upcoming meeting and I have a deadline of 3:00pm, can you provide feedback until then", would do. Why do we write in the first way? I think a lot of Americans can relate to this example, we tend to use a lot of buzz words and are almost judged on our use of them.
* I also like a lot of the comments in the book, such as why do we waste time being vague.....as there is enough distance between people!!! It just leads to a lot of second guessing.....and the need to communicate a lot more in the future....

- With virtual teams, problems can easily be blown out of proportion! - so true!!!
- I like the emphasis on understanding the purpose - the book puts it out on the "purpose" of the team, or the "why" the team is doing what it is doing. I have always liked the emphasis on the "why" as to "why" the users need to work the way they do, why the system needs to work in a certain way, but I like the emphasis on "why" the team has formed.
- Team members tend to side with those who are located closest to them
- I like the list of 10 Behavioral Rules for The Fun House - 10 rules I think are great for any team!

About halfway through the main portion of the book (and one too many paragraphs about Spinks - read the book if you want to know who this is), I decided to skip to the Briefing Report located in the appendix, to see if something could be learned from reading that portion of the book only.

There are some points that I think could stand on their own if a reader was looking for a quick reference.

- The Collaboration controller chart on pg. 187, I like the outlining of the challenges and how to counteract them.
- In general good parts on the 6 items that make a team work well
- Section 3 on Cooperation is good - similar to other books though, especially on giving and getting trust.
- The general pointers part of Section 3 is good - pointers for building cooperation, although also ones you can see in other books. But at least something you can read quickly and get some ideas.
- Good questions for testing your readiness for managing the team and for testing the preparedness of the team members
- I like the cultural intelligence section, section 8. The Worldprism(tm) model

"Where in the World is my Team", is certainly not an ordinary business book and it is not dry, so it is something new. One of the negatives I have often found with many of these books is the lack of real life examples. "Where in the world is my Team?", provides those real world examples (of course changing the names to protect the innocent!). The bad part is that you can't skip significant sections of it or easily hone in on sections that may be relevant to your situation. The information comes to you in bits and pieces through reading the dialogue of conference calls, or reading email exchanges that Will has engaged in. It is an easy read and, and I hate to say it, but I found myself wondering what was going to happen to Will's father, but at the same time I was often frustrated with all of the "filler" stories and was skipping ahead when I could. However, if you are new to working with global teams and with virtual teams, this is a great first book to pick up. Why pick up a regular business book, when you can have a "story" to go along with it! If you are more experienced, you can still pick up new points, you will just have to wade through a lot of "story" to get to them.
Where in the World is My Team: Making a Success of Your Virtual Global Workplace OverviewAs the economy becomes increasingly global, businesses need employees who can work in teams that cross borders and transcend physical spaces. In Where in the World Is My Team, fictional character Will Williams shares entertaining anecdotes and practical advice to accustom readers to the challenges of a global, virtual workplace. This easy-to-follow guide, ideal for managers and those interested in succeeding in a global economy, introduces new technologies but focuses especially on the six Key Performance Zones for global team collaboration with briefing report summaries to emphasize key points.

The SIM Guide to Enterprise Architecture ReviewThis should have a much snappier title to convey the usefulness and readability of what in other hands, can be a very dry subject. Kappelman brings out the important issues and ideas, and does it with some professional flair and personality, with input from some of the best in the field. This is an excellent overview of a complex subject. The starting roundtable synopsis sets the stage, and your brain, for the content that follows. A very useful work for bringing these ideas into management discussions and practice. The SIM Guide to Enterprise Architecture OverviewEnterprise architecture is leading IT's way to the executive boardroom, as CIOs are now taking their place at the management table. Organizations investing their time, money, and talent in enterprise architecture (EA) have realized significant process improvement and competitive advantage. However, as these organizations discovered, it is one thing to acquire a game-changing technology but quite another to discover ways to use it well.A project of the Society for Information Management's Enterprise Architecture Working Group and edited by Leon A. Kappelman, The SIM Guide to Enterprise Architecture provides insights from leading authorities on EA, including John Zachman, Larry DeBoever, George Paras, Jeanne Ross, and Randy Hite. The book supplies a solid understanding of key concepts for effectively leveraging EA to redesign business processes, integrate services, and become an Information Age enterprise. Beginning with a look at current theory and frameworks, the book discusses the practical application of enterprise architecture and includes a wealth of best practices, resources, and references. It contains the SIM survey of IT organizations' EA activities, which provides important metrics for evaluating progress and success. Successful businesses exploit synergy among business functions and push the boundaries of process design. IT's cross-functional position uniquely qualifies it to lead process innovation. EA lets CIOs integrate technology with business vision and is the roadmap for implementing new systems, changing behavior, and driving value. This book explores the vision, foundation, and enabling technology required to successfully transform organizations with enterprise architecture.

White Space Revisited: Creating Value through Process ReviewIn 1990, after decades of work helping companies improve their business processes, Geary A. Rummer joined with his business partner, Alan Brache to publish Improving Performance: How to Manage the White Space on the Organization Chart. The book proved a seminal event in the development of the business process movement, still sells, and is often known as the "white space" book. The "white space" referred to in the title is the space between the departmental silos one finds on any organization chart - and the way on manages them is by defining business processes that flow across the various silos to produce and ultimately sell the organization's products and services.
This new book was written by Geary Rummler, his long time colleague, Alan Ramias and his son, Rick Rummler over the course of the past two years to provide an update on what they have learned since the first book was published in 1990. Given Rummler's importance in shaping the thinking of so many, this publication of this update will necessarily be a major event.
To my way of thinking, Geary Rummler was always the performance analysts' performance analyst. He didn't promote himself in the way that others did and was never as well known to the general public as process gurus like Edwards Deming or Michael Hammer. On the other hand, over the course of his career, he has done more to influence the way process improvement work is actually done today than anyone else I know. The quality control community owes the emphasis on defining processes at the core of Six Sigma to Geary's work at Motorola. Similarly, the IT community owes their current swimlane-based, customer-focused BPMN diagrams to Geary's efforts to create flow diagrams that business people could easily understand. And we all owe Geary thanks for his relentless emphasis on process change that improved corporate and human performance.
Over the years Improving Performance has been a bible to many process practitioners. Reviewers have consistently said that it was the best book to give to business mangers who were looking for an introduction to process. Predictably, this new book, summarizing Geary Rummler's latest thinking about process analysis, process management, and organizational performance, will be widely read by new managers who are trying to make their organizations more process centric, and by today's process practitioners who are trying to figure out how to fit all the various technologies together into a whole.
I was proud to be asked to write the Foreword to this book and recommend it to anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to what process and performance improvement is all about.White Space Revisited: Creating Value through Process OverviewWhen Improving Performance: Managing the White Space on the Organization Chart was published in 1990, it was lauded as the book that launched the Process Improvement revolution. This was the book that first detailed an approach that bridged the gaps between organization strategy, work processes and individual performance. Two decades later, White Space Revisited goes beyond a mere revision of that groundbreaking book and refocuses on the ultimate purpose of organizations, which is to create and sustain value. This book picks up where Improving Performance left off and shares what we have learned about process in the past 15 years since it was published and how the reader (primarily practitioners) can capitalize on these notions in their own pursuit of process excellence.
White Space Revisited is a comprehensive resource that offers process and performance professionals a conceptual foundation, a thorough and proven methodology, a set of remarkable working tools for doing process work in a more significant way, and a series of candid observations about the practice of Business Process Management (BPM). The book's time-tested methods, models, tools, and guidelines serve to align people, process, and technology
White Space Revisited includes information on a wealth of vital topics and
Describes the difference in impact of focusing on single processes vs. large scale improvements
Provides an integrated step-by-step blueprint for designing, implementing, and sustaining process management
Offers a detailed methodology for strategic and tactical process definition and improvement
Spells out how to leverage the power of IT to optimize organizational performance
Shows how to integrate the energy and value of Six Sigma, Process Improvement and Process Management into an effective Process Excellence Group

Handbook on Business Process Management 2: Strategic Alignment, Governance, People and Culture (International Handbooks on Information Systems) ReviewThis is really the most comprehensive and up-to-date source on BPM I have seen so far. All top shots are in there, such as Michael Hammer, Tom Davenport, Paul Harmon, Andrew Spanyi and Geary Rummler, just to name a few. I particularly like the scope that really goes beyond "old school BPM" incorporating a wider range of BPM elements such as "strategic alignment", "governance", "people and culture" in addition to more elements such as "modelling methods" and "process-aware information systems" which are also covered. All in all, great read and very recommended!Handbook on Business Process Management 2: Strategic Alignment, Governance, People and Culture (International Handbooks on Information Systems) OverviewBusiness Process Management (BPM) has become one of the most widely used approaches for the design of modern organizational and information systems. The conscious treatment of business processes as significant corporate assets has facilitated substantial improvements in organizational performance but is also used to ensure the conformance of corporate activities. This Handbook presents in two volumes the contemporary body of knowledge as articulated by the world's leading BPM thought leaders. This second volume focuses on the managerial and organizational challenges of Business Process Management such as strategic and cultural alignment, governance and the education of BPM stakeholders. As such, this book provides concepts and methodologies for the integration of BPM. Each chapter has been contributed by leading international experts. Selected case studies complement their views and lead to a summary of BPM expertise that is unique in its coverage of the most critical success factors of BPM.

Alpha Male Syndrome ReviewThis is a book that would have benefitted me greatly had I had it during my Enron years... Alpha Male Syndrome by Kate Ludeman and Eddie Erlandson. It would have helped me deal with a majority of the management there...
Contents: Alpha Male Syndrome; The Variety of Alpha Males; The Alpha Commander; The Alpha Visionary; The Alpha Strategist; The Alpha Executor; The Alpha Male Team; The Care and Feeding of the Alpha Male; Coaching for Alphas; Sample Alpha Assessment Report; The Alpha Scale; Notes; Index; About the Authors
Many people have heard the term "Alpha Male" in the business world... They are the dominating leaders who have charisma and produce results. And on the positive side, the alpha traits of the commander/visionary/strategist/executor can be a boon to your business. But with the strengths of each of those roles come a number of risks. Ludeman and Erlandson break down the traits of each alpha style in a clear and consistent fashion, and then proceed to speak to each of those personas with practical ideas on how they can capitalize on the strengths and minimize the risks. There is also an analysis of how each style plays out in the "alpha triangle", the interplay between villain, victim, and hero. The alpha and their coworkers each show up in the triangle, and often the players shift between roles with each situation. If you're *not* the alpha, you'll start to understand how to deal with each of those personality types, which might make the difference between your survival or burnout on the job. Oh, and women? You can be an alpha too. You show it differently, but you still have the same risks to manage...
When I worked at Enron Broadband, management was rife with all these types. Unfortunately, I didn't have these tools on hand to survive as well as I could have. It wouldn't have made a difference in their behavior, but it would have made a huge difference in my job satisfaction. A critical read if you have one of these creatures in your life...

Rethinking Retention In Good Times and Bad: Breakthrough Ideas for Keeping Your Best Workers ReviewYou might think that a recession is exactly the time when good employees batten down their hatches and cling to their jobs, even if they do not like them. Think again. Really talented employees can find work during any economic period. Indeed, they change jobs all the time. Such turnover cuts productivity, making operations less efficient, and burdens companies with heavy employee replacement costs. Although the tariff can be staggering, most organizations do not have a formal - or even an informal - retention abatement process. Instead, they relegate retention to a sideline human resources department activity. To correct this operational oversight, retention consultant Richard P. Finnegan provides the "Rethinking Retention Model," a robust best-practices program you can use to cut down on expensive employee churn. In his heavily researched and sourced book, Finnegan thoroughly details the exact steps organizations should implement to increase retention. He offers numerous case studies that illustrate how companies hold on to their best employees. getAbstract highly recommends this comprehensive, logical, thoughtful guide as an ideal resource for CEOs, managers and HR executives who need to close the revolving door.Rethinking Retention In Good Times and Bad: Breakthrough Ideas for Keeping Your Best Workers OverviewHow do organizations keep the workers they want? Until now, employee retention strategies have been based on instincts rather than research. With no firm body of knowledge to use as a guide, employee turnover has been a problem for all organizations. This book is the first to offer a top-to-bottom, organization-wide retention action plan. Many organizations lose employees and profits because they don't know which processes to put into place to cut employee turnover. They speak of building retention cultures but don't know who should do what and when. This hands-on tactical guide gives those answers, providing specific strategies and tactics backed by the author's own research and on-site experience. It is essential reading for all types of organizations-large or small, public or private, with high concentrations of low-skilled or high skilled workers, and across multiple industries. Also addressed is how to retain your high-performing workers in slow economic times. If you are losing workers you want to keep, this book will tell you how to put retention solutions in place across Read this book with a pen in your hand. Circle ideas you like, strike through those you don't, and make notes as to how you can apply these tactics in your company. Then pass it on to a colleague and ask her to do the same. Stir up your company's thinking on employee retention so progress happens, fast.-From the Introduction, Rethinking Retention

How to Hire A-Players: Finding the Top People for Your Team- Even If You Don't Have a Recruiting Department ReviewI haven't purchased the book and it may well be worth five stars from everyone. This review is intended as a sanity check for other people who buy lots of books on Amazon.com and who count on natural reviews to help guide their purchases.
I took a look at this book based in part on the remarkable rating. However, all current ratings (as of July 21, 2010) are five stars, mostly by Real Name(tm) reviewers who've never reviewed another book, mostly from around the day the book was first released (fast readers or advance copies?).
While the current thirteen rave reviews may indeed be legitimate, representative, and spontaneous, my spidey sense tingled as I went through them. I certainly don't doubt they're real people given that at least a couple of them (e.g. Jennifer Pausch and Rich Ledbetter) both appear to be existing customers of the author who've also provided nice testimonials for his website.
I theorize this is a deliberate (and a little too obvious) marketing campaign rather than spontaneous reviews like we rely on for most other books (or maybe other authors' publicists are just more subtle). If the former, to me that feels misleading and in bad faith towards those who look for a pattern in natural reviews to help make a buying decision.
Maybe Amazon also needs a "Disclosure: I know the author on a first name basis(tm)" demarcation? Or perhaps this is indeed a really awesome book with an unfortunate and irrelevant confluence of indicators in the reviews. I'm keen to see additional spontaneous and bona fide reviews from people who don't know the author and have read this book.

The Philosophy and Practice of Coaching: Insights and Issues for a New Era ReviewAs an executive coach who works with organizations in leadership development, I was eager to read this book. I reviewed Diane Brennan's chapter on Leadership Coaching: The Impact on the Organization, and took away several new insights. Brennan's intention was to explore the value of coaching for both the leader and the organization. She accomplishes this by introducing academic rigor to the coaching process, using case study material which is analyzed and linked back to leadership theory.
Brennan's writing style is easy to follow and informative. Using a scholar-practitioner model, Brennan offers her readers a synthesis of critical and creative insights. She challenges the reader to approach the coaching experience with a mind-set for continuous learning and critical reflective practice. Brennan demonstrates how to ask the "tough questions" as they relate to both the client and the coach. Furthermore, Brennan points out the duality of learning that can occur in the coaching partnership when inward reflection is at the core of the experience.
In my opinion, Brennan achieved her purpose by presenting a systematic approach that allows the reader to easily follow her thinking process. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about coaching and leadership. The Philosophy and Practice of Coaching: Insights and Issues for a New Era OverviewThe Philosophy and Practice of Coaching will help to advance the global conversation about the future of coaching. The book is organized into three key sections: Foundations for Coaching, Applications of Coaching, and Organizations and Coaching, and the focus is on enabling the reader to astutely link theory and practice.

Rescue the Problem Project: A Complete Guide to Identifying, Preventing, and Recovering from Project Failure ReviewIt is almost certain that an experienced Project Manager has, at one time or another, run up against a project that is over-budget, running late, or otherwise out of control...a project that is "in the red." Rescue the Problem Project by Todd Williams presents methods for recovering red projects, reminds us that recovery is itself a project and provides insights into keeping projects out of the red in the first place.
The book presents suggestions and prescriptions based on the author's 25 year experience as a "Senior Audit and Recovery Specialist" and each chapter is peppered with very readable, brief case studies highlighting examples of his applying the techniques he describes. While there are a few examples that come off as a bit self-aggrandizing all are immensely helpful in understanding how and why the techniques work which provides a degree of credibility lacking in many business books.
A seasoned Project Manager will recognize their own experience as the author notes that poor scope definition, lack of executive leadership, and ineffective change management are barriers to project recovery (and most likely contributed to problems in the first place). And no PM should be surprised at the need to perform an audit and engage with stakeholders to collect data and understand the current and desired states. However the author follows his own prescriptions providing specificity in his examples of how each of these is often done wrong and how to do them right.
It may be unsettling to some PM's to read the suggestion that a specialized, external "Recovery Manager" rather than the Project Manager him or herself is the best person to perform the audit and analysis. The chief argument in favor of this approach is that "An objective view is critical to a proper audit and reducing any preconceptions of a solution." The book notes the potential for resistance to this notion but it seems a reasonable approach and calls to mind the frequently cited Einstein quote that "Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them."

The audit is the second of the five steps in the recovery process with the first being the problem realized and the remaining three being analyze data, negotiate solutions, and execute the new plan. The "how to" of each step is well described and the book's companion website provides templates and spreadsheets to assist in rescuing your own projects should your organization decline to hire a recovery manager. Another of the recurring themes of the author's method is to start performing root-cause analysis early and to respond to the findings quickly, "This is a distinguishing feature of my approach; other approaches often omit root-cause analysis or leave it for the end of the process." The reason for this is straightforward...until the root causes are found and mitigated; they are still able to exert the same kind of pressure on the project that put it in the red in the first place.
Identifying and recovering from project failure are not the only goals of the book; prevention is an essential theme to which the last 40 pages are dedicated and again the author's experience proves valuable as he provides details for improvement in, and specific examples of the areas of leadership, team management, risk and handling change. Chapters 10 through 13 are not officially part of the section on prevention but clearly could be. These chapters provide some of the best primers on and comparisons of classical, agile and critical chain methodologies that I've read and I couldn't agree more that when it comes to methodology, "This philosophy--one size fits all--really fits no project." The idea is to treat methodologies as tools in the bag where the marrying of the right methodology to the particular project can go quite a long way toward avoiding problems.
While many of the 261 pages of Rescue the Problem Project present ideas with which an experienced Project Manager is likely familiar, there is much to gain in the detailed examples and the way in which the ideas are presented. New PM's (those who have some education or experience in the field) will certainly benefit as they learn from the author's advice and experience how to prevent projects from going into the red.
Rescue the Problem Project: A Complete Guide to Identifying, Preventing, and Recovering from Project Failure OverviewWhen budgets are dwindling, deadlines passing, and tempers flaring, the usual response is to browbeat the project team and point fingers of blame. Not helpful. For these situations, what is needed is an objective process for accurately assessing what is wrong and a clear plan of action for fixing the problem. "Rescue the Problem Project" provides project managers, executives, and customers with the answers they require. Turnaround specialist Todd Williams has worked with dozens of companies in multiple industries resuscitating failing projects. In this new book, he reveals an in-depth, start-to-finish process that includes: techniques for identifying the root causes of the trouble; steps for putting projects back on track audit the project, analyze the data, negotiate the solution, and execute the new plan; nearly 70 real-world examples of what works, what doesn't, and why; and, guidelines for avoiding problems in subsequent projects. Many books explain how to run a project, but only this one shows how to bring it back from the brink of disaster. And with 65 per cent of projects failing to meet goals and 25 per cent cancelled outright, that's essential information.
