Creating a Culture of Competence ReviewThe book contains numerous bits and pieces of advice, insights, and analyses on how to handle personal competencies, a person乫s traits and characteristics that help the individual become successful at performing their jobs. It is particularly useful with the tools and guidelines derived from the author乫s experience in the field of human resource management, i.e. headhunting.
It fails to provide any integrated view of how these ideas can be leveraged to create an organizational competence. For example, there is a very brief discussion of whether competency assessment should be linked to compensation, with a general list of pros and cons, and the answer is, 乬it depends on the organisation.乭 To adequately deal with this issue, we need at least a minimum understanding of the value of a 乬culture of competence乭 against those of alternative corporate cultures that place less emphasis on personal competencies than on other factors such as management control, cooperation, and competition.
I recommend the book for those seeking a practical understanding of personal competency management, but not for those seeking to 乬create a culture of competence.乭 The book only partially delivers on its stated promise, but remains useful for the hands-on guidance it contains.Creating a Culture of Competence OverviewCompetence-and its role in achieving peak performance-remains one of the hot issues in business today. Yet it's not enough for individual leaders, managers, and employees to demonstrate personal competencies. Rather, an entire organization must be unified to create a culture of competence. This culture can then be passed along to succeeding generations of employees who will continue to contribute to, and strengthen, a company's future. In Creating a Culture of Competence, Michael Zwell provides a bold, prescriptive approach to achieving organizational success through improved individual and group job performance and satisfaction. He clearly defines those core qualities that lead to peak performance, then illustrates, step-by-step, how companies can identify and develop individual leadership, managerial, and employee competencies for maximum personal and organizational benefit.Based on years of personal experience and research, Creating a Culture of Competence expertly combines behavioral theory with solid business practice to create positive organizational change. You'll discover how to:* Use vision and competencies for cultural transformation* Create competency models* Implement competencies in selection and performance managementYou'll learn what really makes an organization successful . . . understand how HR's role is becoming central to building a high-performance organization . . . find out what technologies are being used to change corporate culture . . . then combine these elements to create a highly effective, competency-based organizational strategy.Creating a Culture of Competence offers a blueprint for hiring, developing, and retaining a superior workforce. By encouraging individuals to realize their potential, then motivating them to work in concert, you can lead your organization to reach its objectives . . . and get superior business results.

Vital Factors: The Secret to Transforming Your Business - And Your Life (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewI was mostly surprised about what this book isn't about. It's not about Vital Factors really. It's about the people that have implemented the Map/Vital Factors (and many other branded terms) processes. 98% of the book is stories of how businesses have fared on the system. Very few pages are given to exactly how to impliment the system yourself.
That said, the purpose of the book is to lead you to Map consulting. For that I give it a three star rating, because I think the title and the summary are misleading. It's a book that convinces you quite well that you need the system, but doesn't focus how to do that. Should the last third have been instruction and method, I would have easily awarded this book 5 stars. Easy!
Even though the book gets a low rating, the success stories they present are mind-blowing. The companies they focus on (like Cold Stone) increased their company size ten fold. It's strange that company profiles only date back to 2000, besides one or two, but I am still convinced it's a good system.
After reading this book I can't tell if the map system is extremely simple or not. There's just not much about the Map system in the book. I would very much like to implement it in my companies so I will research it more before hiring Map. I am guessing that will start around $20k to have Map consult with us. It's a big leap from a $10 book you see.
Surprisingly absent was a focus on general processes. E-Myth handles that well, but that doesn't address Vital Factors (priorities) like this book does.
Please, let's have a book ABOUT the Map system. I am not one that needs to go to a seminar or hire a consultant to initiate change. Good book, but I can't recommend it fully until that is added.
To Mr Lee Froschheiser: I am sorry to be so negative about your book. Should you be interested in adjusting it to meet these concerns, I will happily issue 5 stars and hand out 30 copies to my network. If one of the Vital Factors measurements behind writing the book is increased company exposure, I think I have offered a simple solution to help that factor improve. On the other hand, I understand not wanting to give away all of Map's secrets. Sure would be good reading though!Vital Factors: The Secret to Transforming Your Business - And Your Life (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

The Philosophy and Practice of Coaching: Insights and Issues for a New Era ReviewAs an executive coach who works with organizations in leadership development, I was eager to read this book. I reviewed Diane Brennan's chapter on Leadership Coaching: The Impact on the Organization, and took away several new insights. Brennan's intention was to explore the value of coaching for both the leader and the organization. She accomplishes this by introducing academic rigor to the coaching process, using case study material which is analyzed and linked back to leadership theory.
Brennan's writing style is easy to follow and informative. Using a scholar-practitioner model, Brennan offers her readers a synthesis of critical and creative insights. She challenges the reader to approach the coaching experience with a mind-set for continuous learning and critical reflective practice. Brennan demonstrates how to ask the "tough questions" as they relate to both the client and the coach. Furthermore, Brennan points out the duality of learning that can occur in the coaching partnership when inward reflection is at the core of the experience.
In my opinion, Brennan achieved her purpose by presenting a systematic approach that allows the reader to easily follow her thinking process. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about coaching and leadership. The Philosophy and Practice of Coaching: Insights and Issues for a New Era OverviewThe Philosophy and Practice of Coaching will help to advance the global conversation about the future of coaching. The book is organized into three key sections: Foundations for Coaching, Applications of Coaching, and Organizations and Coaching, and the focus is on enabling the reader to astutely link theory and practice.

Leading Organization Design: How to Make Organization Design Decisions to Drive the Results You Want ReviewThis is an extremely insightful and highly useful guide for designing organizations prepared to succeed in today's competitive marketplace. I was expecting a ten thousand foot, theoretical examination of necessary constructs and thought parameters, but instead found something very different and refreshing. While Kesler and Kates' book is well researched and thoughtful, it also provides an experience and example-based road map that is both logical and clear. The authors present a planning and implementation guide that specifically outlines participation, tasks and milestones. Want to design an organization that is customer focused, efficient, scalable, and achieves results? This book is not only a must-read, it's a must follow.Leading Organization Design: How to Make Organization Design Decisions to Drive the Results You Want Overview
Praise for Leading Organization Design

"Designing organizations for performance can be a daunting task. Kesler and Kates have done an admirable job distilling the inherent complexity of the design process into manageable parts that can yield tangible results. Leading Organization Design provides an essential hands-on roadmap for any business leader who wants to master this topic." -Robert Simons, Charles M. Williams Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School
"Kesler and Kates have encapsulated their wealth of knowledge and practical experience into an updated model on organizational design that will become a new primer on the subject." -Neville Isdell, retired chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company
"In today's world of global business, organizational design is a critical piece of long-term success. Kesler and Kates have captured multiple approaches to optimize global opportunities, while highlighting some of the keys to managing through organizational transition. A great read for today's global business leaders." -Charles Denson, president, Nike Brand
"Leading Organization Design has some unique features that make it valuable. It is one of the few and certainly only recent books to take us through an explicit process to design modern organizations. This is accomplished with the five-milestone process. The process is not a simple cookbook. Indeed, the authors have achieved a balance between process and content. In so doing, Kesler and Kates show us what to do as well as how to do it."-Jay Galbraith, from the Foreword
"Sheds light on the challenges of organization design in a complex enterprise and more importantly provides aninsightful and practical roadmap for business decisions."-Randy MacDonald, SVP, human resources, IBM
