Going Visual: Using Images to Enhance Productivity, Decision-Making and Profits ReviewThis book aims at making corporate and marketing directors to realize that we have entered a culture of images and videos. It covers well some of the consequences of this mutation from writing to visual. Admittedly, lots of situation are covered to advocate for anticipating actions in the image civilization, and suggestions are made on how to do it. As a matter of fact, the discoveries of Neuro-sciences including Neuro-marketing (not covered in the book) explain why this phenomenum does happen. At a practical level, the successes of MySpace and YouTube (after the not so recent development of TV ads) should be sufficient evidence.
The book however does not refer to the problems linked to the daily use of images by the professional world (mainly the necessity to index them for database treatment or simply for searching, filing and handling). Machines do not know how to recognize if there is a blond guy on a picture in the middle of several other individuals, when they can do this selection with texts. There is a huge amount of research going on to solve such complex problems which have more consequences than it seems and the author simply does not even touches these aspects. Amazon's mechanical turk was created precisely for such reasons. Some scientists try to use the sound track of videos to that effect... This book totally misses these issues.
In brief a great topic properly advocated but imperfectly analyzed and not exhaustively covered. Reality doesn't need to be advocated, it lands by itself ; virtue for books (which are in depth studies) lays in detailed solutions and this book comes short on this.Going Visual: Using Images to Enhance Productivity, Decision-Making and Profits OverviewHow and why to make visual communication a powerful competitive toolFrom digital cameras and camera phones to videoconferencing, visual communication technology is changing not only personal lives but global business relationships and communities of interest. Visual communication is an essential tool for every corporation-in any industry-that wants to stay competitive.Going Visual demonstrates how businesses can harness the power of digital images and video to communicate comprehensively and unambiguously. Global Action Networks: Creating Our Future Together (Bocconi on Management) ReviewGlobal Action Networks provides an outstanding framework for addressing today's complex social and environmental issues. It gives a comprehensive overview of current systemic, large-scale change methodologies and also describes how the complex problems we face globally are being addressed by a new type of entity, the global action network. Based on research of 80 networks, it's rife with grounded examples and concrete ways these networks have been successful.
Waddell cites trends of continuing globalization, diversity, complexity and the disruptive impact of new technology as contributing factors to our inability to address today's issues utilizing traditional strategies. These factors are an impetus for shifting our assumptions about the way the world works and the way we engage and innovate to address social and environmental problems. He posits that we need to address issues by utilizing systems thinking and including an array of stakeholders to craft solutions and envision emerging futures rather than breaking up a problem and analyzing its parts in a linear fashion. This leads to more effective, locally applicable, timely solutions that work, given the dynamic nature of our interdependent world.
Global Action Networks are basically multi-stakeholder networks that span geographical and institutional boundaries in order to effect systemic change. Because they involve systems thinking, developed by Peter Senge and others at MIT, and are designed to build connections and trust, Waddell argues that they lead to superior results. He says the networks help shift perspectives because they create a collective understanding of a problem, take into account impacts on multiple parties, and operate from a place of future possibilities. The solutions tend to be breakthroughs that change the rules of the game.
Examples of global action networks include the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which has increased access to effective treatments, saving 3.5 million lives; the Forest Stewardship Council, which has certified 300 million acres of forests and engaged 16,000 retail businesses in 100 countries to sell certified products; and the Principles for Responsible Investment, which is changing the logic of the global finance system through a set of principles that has engaged 850 signatories representing $US 20 trillion in assets. These networks take a whole systems approach and a stance of emergence, where the relationships and power dynamics shift due to interactions of diverse players - and change can go viral by connecting local actions.
Waddell helps us understand characteristics of successful networks. While the speed and rapid growth of viral networks may be the most visible trait, he shows how crafting a set of principles, embracing diversity, building trust, and fostering entrepreneurial action are necessary components that help networks take global concerted action while responding to a wide range of local conditions. With their voluntary leadership, focus on levers for change, and advancement of best practice GAN's aim to reach a tipping point to shift the global system in their issue area. GAN's go beyond "scaling up" and beyond reform to "scaling across" geographies, applying "triple-loop learning" where the change is both meaningful and transformational. The depth of his approach is similar to Frieze's observations on building resilience and "scaling across" in Walk Out and Walk On (Barrett-Kohler, 2011).
The book includes chapters on "seeing the whole," "mastering change," and "formalizing connections" with some specific and very useful tools to develop effective networks. Mapping in many different forms is presented as a way to understand the complex and dynamic relationships of network players and to distinguish between types of complexity (spatial, cultural, knowledge, change, relational).
In the chapter on mastering change, Waddell starts with action learning as a basis for change and expands on that by proposing four change strategies that range from the individual to the collective to inter-personal to systemic, noting that in order for change to be transformational, it must include both individual and structural change - even bringing in spiritual aspects of change. He includes "leading from the future as it emerges" as seen in Otto Scharmer's Theory U (Society for Organizational Learning, 2007) as well as many forms of Dialogue (reflective, generative) including those in the comprehensive text Democratic Dialogue by Pruitt (UNDP/OAS, 2007).
In addressing formalizing connections, the book gets into some of the nuts and bolts of organizing, utilizing design principles and building structural components of the network.
One of the most helpful chapters outlines competencies required for success. This well thought out set of eight competencies not only applies to those in GAN's but also to any leader working with complex issues, uncertainty, and tumultuous change. They include knowledge, skills, and behaviors in leadership, network development, measuring impact, conflict and change, communications, learning systems, policy and advocacy, and resource mobilization. He brings in the concept of shared leadership seen in "Leadership, Excellence and the Soft Skills" by Bradford and Robin (Stanford GSB, 2004) and personal mastery and learning organizations in Senge's The Fifth Discipline (Doubleday, 1990).
Waddell's model is part of a growing body of work that addresses social issues with a level of depth and engagement that leads to impact on the global, local, and personal levels as it shifts the system within which it works. In the United States, The Interaction Institute for Social Change (IISC), with its eighteen-year track record, is probably the leading organization pioneering this transformational work. Waddell asserts that global action networks represent a 21st-century global governance model that stems from two main sources: the positive impact of technology on how work and society is organized; and the weaknesses in post-World War II international institutions. Global Action Networks contributes to this articulation of what's next in governance by showing how we can envision a future and work collaboratively to create a better world.
With solid examples and clear logic, Waddell articulately presents a concise, effective, and useful model for us to consider local and global approaches to the complex issues we face as a society. The book will help any social innovation practitioner look at his or her competencies, learn an emerging networked approaches, and find new ways to discern and navigate our most complex problems.

Global Action Networks: Creating Our Future Together (Bocconi on Management) OverviewThe world's governments are overwhelmed with climate change, war and unrest, the global financial crisis and poverty but there is a promising invention in Global Action Networks (GANs). GANs mobilize resources, bridge divides and promote the long-term deep change and innovation work that is needed to address the global challenges.

The Psychology of Persuasion: How To Persuade Others To Your Way Of Thinking ReviewThe Psychology of Persuasion is written for the person who wants to influence others. Hogan reveals more communication and influence secrets in one book than you might expect possible. The phallic paradigm of persuasion begins with the concept of Win/Win (which the author clearly believes in and repeats over and over throughout the text) and finishes with some very complex and advanced persuasion techniques that are difficult to describe in a book review.
Having been in market research for seven years, I can tell you that his insights into what works and what doesn't is pretty accurate. I also learned a great deal I hadn't come across in my work with P&G.
Specifically, the section about power words is worth a great deal to a person running their own business or for a salesperson. (It's also nice to have this information as a mother of a teenager!)
The next information that is striking (and there are some basics in the book like building rapport, elementary sales tools, and the like that make this useful for beginners as well as those of us who use this material to make a living)is the detailed discussions about nonverbal communication and strategic movement. I've never seen discussions of strategic movement in any book and the body language components are mature and insightful. Everything seems well researched and ready for use.
Another very nice benefit of this book is the subject of collecting intelligence. It seems that most everyone in the influence and persuasion professions have ignored this element and Hogan pulls a rabbit out of his hat here. Using simple examples, he shows how to really gather useful intelligence whether you are a marketer with a big budget or a small business person.
The most exciting material is the second half of the book. Here Hogan describes advanced techniques of persuasion that, once again, I have never seen anyone discuss. What again seems like magic is described carefully and with a simple but scientific precision.
Appropriate to news events of the year 2001, brainwashing is discussed in detail in the book and in light of current events, these revelations should be read by all.
The Psychology of Persuasion is a fun read. It is written so that you can be more influential with your kids, your boss or your business dealings.
The only drawback of this book was that most of the stories are about small business people. Those of us in corporate America have to extrapolate how to use these one on one tools, or small group strategies to the much larger audience of America and Western Europe. Aside from that, there isn't anything to complain about.
This was a big win for me.The Psychology of Persuasion: How To Persuade Others To Your Way Of Thinking OverviewUsing techniques from hypnosis, neurolinguistic programming, the Bible, and the greatest salespeople in history, Hogan empowers you to improve all areas of your life.

Leadership and the Sexes: Using Gender Science to Create Success in Business (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewI am a professor of Cognitive Science who specialized in brain imaging at a major research University. I write this review having been disgusted to recently read some quotes from this book in a paper by a student. This book makes baldly false claims. It is worthless from a scientific point of view. Gender differences in the brain are subtle, and so far it has proven hard to identify any reliable brain differences that translate through to behavioral differences. I often look for such differences in my research on social and scientific reasoning, and to date I have found them too small to be significant. This is not to say that there are no biological gender differences. There are small behavioral differences (e.g. on mental rotation), and some small biological differences (see work by Larry Cahill). However cultural effects of gender stereotype are also very strong - the current evidence would suggest they are far stronger than any genuine biological differences. Self-report measures show clear differences, because those measures assess people's self-concept, but neither objective behavior nor neural measures show such clear differences.
Books like this one play loose with scientific facts in the service of reinforcing social stereotypes. These stereotypes tend to be heavily internalized by men and women, so that they actually influence their performance on tests, causing them to perform less well than they might otherwise. This phenomenon is called stereotype threat - you can google it. Because of stereoptype threat, we can't even be sure the small differences we see between genders on objective performance tests reflect genuine differences in potential, or are merely reflections of social sterotypes.
I hope this makes it clear that a book like this not just scientifically inaccurate, it is also socially dangerous.
Those who want to read a scientifically respectable, well-informed, and balanced book about gender differences in the brain should read Lise Eliot's book "Pink Brain, Blue Brain".Leadership and the Sexes: Using Gender Science to Create Success in Business (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

Perfection: Coming to Terms with Being Human ReviewI think Michael Hyde is one of the most brilliant minds in his subject area. When I attended Wake Forest some 12-14 years ago I had the honor of taking a linguistics class which he taught. To this day, he is one of the only professors I can remember by name. The other reviewer should have read the product description before purchasing, as it clearly states, "he ponders the consequences of the perfection-driven impulse of medical science." You can not get a clearer explanation of what to expect in terms of subject matter.Perfection: Coming to Terms with Being Human OverviewIn a masterful survey of the history of the idea of human perfection, prize-winning author and noted rhetorician Michael J. Hyde leads a fascinating excursion through Western philosophy, religion, science, and art. Eloquently and engagingly he delves the canon of Western thought, drawing on figures from St. Augustine and John Rawls to Leonardo da Vinci and David Hume to Kenneth Burke and Mary Shelley. On the journey, Hyde expounds on the very notion and Otherness of God, the empirical and ontological workings of daily existence, the development of reason, and the bounds of beauty. In the end, he ponders the consequences of the perfection-driven impulse of medical science and considers the implications of the bourgeoning rhetoric of our posthuman future. It is nothing short of a triumphant examination of why we humans are challenged to live a life of significant insignificance.

Motivate Like a CEO: Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act ReviewI figured since I am a CEO, I should figure out how to motivate like a CEO so I read the book called, "Motivate Like A CEO Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act!" by Suzanne Bates.
The first chapter resonated a lot with me. The gist of the message is summarized by one of the quotes, "Purpose is necessary, critical to a happy, healthy, and successful life". The message is that purpose is essential for motivation. The challenge is that people are motivated by different things. People work for a pay cheque but they live for a purpose. The first step in leading an organization is to be in touch with your own purpose.
The second chapter talks about the eight principles of motivating others through communication. In her previous book, Bates wrote "Speaking Like a CEO" and much of her topic was on communications. This book further re-emphasizes that with eight principles which include:
1) Begins with you -- your purpose and passion.
2) Communicate a clear powerful mission.
3) Learn what motivates people.
4) Make personal connections with others.
5) Make the conversation about them (like Stephen Covey's first law -- Seek first to understand).
6) Praise recognize and reward.
7) Walk the talk.
8) Empower people (I am big on this one. I don't believe any organization is scaleable unless people are empowered to do the right thing). Any leader is very limited if they expect to control and do everything themselves.
The book has exercises on how to discover your purpose; how to connect with people to purpose; link the what with the why, etc.
The book absolutely needs to be written. It is clear that good leaders need to inspire people and the book gives a lot of the reasons why they need to be inspired and some examples on how some people were inspired. I think in some cases it is harder to put into action some of the ideas in real-life.
I found the book to be an easy read and very well laid out. I like the summaries at the end of the chapters and you could read just the insert boxes to understand the book.
It is a good, well written book for any leader.
Motivate Like a CEO: Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act Overview
"An exciting read, you won't want to put Motivate Like a CEO down until you've mastered all of its secrets!"Marshall Goldsmith, New York Times bestselling author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There

"Motivated leaders are rare, yet everyone seeks to become one. The greatness of this book is that it breaks down the process by giving you the ideas and the tools to motivate and inspire yourself first, and then others second. If you're in a leadership position or hoping to get to the next level, make the decision to buy this book, study this book, and put it into practice."-Jeffrey Gitomer, author of The Little Red Book of Selling

Meanings in Madagascar: Cases of Intercultural Communication ReviewAs a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar I chanced upon this book in the Malagasy PC library. So rare was the book I was not allowed to remove it from our training center and had to read the book in three days. Like the other reviewer stated, I wish I had read this before going to Mada. Very accurate and balance commentary of Malagasy culture and history.Meanings in Madagascar: Cases of Intercultural Communication OverviewMost analyses of interpersonal communication ignore the relationship between communication and culture. When intercultural communication takes place, the interlocutors may have very different conceptions of what is being discussed, since meaning in any culture results from lifelong learning within that culture. Such concepts as worldviews, cultural beliefs, and decision-making processes are unique to each culture, and affect each culture's interpretation of the same discussion. In illustrating possible misunderstandings because of cultural differences, Dahl focuses on the Merina in the Highlands of Madagascar and the Western World. He suggests many ways in which the Malagasy's worldview and values are different from the Westerner's, and how these differences affect communication.

Teaching Intercultural Rhetoric and Technical Communication: Theories, Curriculum, Pedagogies and Practices (Baywood's Technical Communications Series) (Baywood's Technical Communication Series) ReviewThe world is smaller than ever, as many nations can converge to create a single product. "Teaching Intercultural Rhetoric and Technical Communication: Theories, Curriculum, Pedagogies, and Practices" discusses this development of culture and business, discussing the need for businesses to understand the business culture of the countries they work with to avoid a nasty misunderstanding which can lead to a major profit and time loss for all those involved. Combining knowledge, research, theory, and much more, Barry Thatcher & Kirk St. Amant lead a group of thinkers who offer much practical and wise thought for succeeding in a business plan not constrained by a single culture or nation. "Teaching Intercultural Rhetoric and Technical Communication" is an excellent resource for any business leader.
Teaching Intercultural Rhetoric and Technical Communication: Theories, Curriculum, Pedagogies and Practices (Baywood's Technical Communications Series) (Baywood's Technical Communication Series) OverviewABOUT THE BOOKIn today's integrated global economy, technical communicators often collaborate in international production teams, work with experts in overseas subject matter, or coordinate documentation for the international release of products. Handbook of Mobile Communication Studies ReviewThis is a book of thirty two independent chapters written by some of the leaders in mobile communication studies by MIT Press, a leader in ethnographic titles devoted to technology.
The chapters span research in countries and regions including Ghana, China, Mexico, Northern Africa, the Arab Gulf States, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Israel, India, the Philippines, Indonesia and South Korea. The editor, James E. Katz, heads the Center for Mobile Communication Studies at Rutgers University.
The focus is not on mobile technology, but how it is used by people based on primary research.
The authors are largely university researchers or researchers in mobile carrier labs. Included are well known mobile ethnographers Jan Chipchase and early prognosticators on technology adoption such as Harold Rheingold and Sherry Turkle.
Much of this type of research is conducted within companies with mobile business interests, and is never published. The value of the book is as a guide to university mobile research centers, who is publishing publicly in the field, in which journals, and at which conferences.
Every essay is fascinating, readable, and extensively footnoted.
The first section is Digital Divides and Social Mobility: studies of feature phone use in developing countries. The second is Sociality and Copresence: studies of dimensions of the always connected individual and group. The third section, Politics and Social Change includes specific studies on democracy, civil society and social change driven by individual and group use of mobile technology. The last section is Culture and Imagination: including studies of mobile gaming, courtship and family dynamics in India, music, and even mobile applications to spiritual mysticism in the Philippines.
I look forward to more books in this format on the topic, published every 2-3 years. Mobile society is a critical worldchanging topic, and moves quickly.Handbook of Mobile Communication Studies OverviewExperts analyze how mobile communication is changing daily life and localculture around the world, in both industrialized and developing countries.

Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear ReviewThe world's best message is ineffective if the person on the receiving end does not understand or relate to it.
It is a harsh standard. It is a message communicators ignore at their own peril. You can be brilliant, creative, even right, but your message will fall flat unless it touches the hearer's prism of experience, beliefs, preconceptions and prejudices.
In Words that Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear, Frank Luntz offers insights into finding and using the right words to achieve your goals. The key to communication is to place yourself in the listener's situation and understand his or her deepest thoughts and beliefs. What the listener perceives constitutes the listener's reality.
Based on his experience as a political and corporate pollster he recommends 11 rules for effective communication:
1.Use small words.
2.Use short sentences.
3.Credibility is as important as philosophy.
4.Consistency matters.
5.Novelty: offer something new.
6.Sound and texture matter.
7.Speak aspirationally.
8.Visualize.
9.Ask a question.
10.Provide context and explain relevance.
11.Visual imagery matters.
Luntz does not stop there. In addition to an insightful discussion complete with illustrations from his professional experience of the 11 rules, he adds critical elaboration:
1.Never assume knowledge or awareness.
2.Get the order right.
3.Gender can obstruct understanding.

If communicating is important to you, and who does not need to, then time spent reading Frank Luntz's book will be well spent. We are all subject to the power of language. Words spell the difference between success and failure. The right words grant you an edge. The author says it all in his subtitle, "It's not what you say--it's what people hear."

Discourse and Practice: New Tools for Critical Analysis (Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics) ReviewFor those involved in the CDA, this book will provide with tools to understand and put into practice CDADiscourse and Practice: New Tools for Critical Analysis (Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics) OverviewAdding a new introduction and two previously unpublished papers, Discourse and Practice: New Tools for Critical Discourse Analysisbrings together van Leeuwen's methodological work on discourse analysis of the last 15 years.Discourse, van Leeuwen argues, is a resource for representation, a knowledge about some aspect of reality which can be drawn upon when that aspect of reality has to be represented, a framework for making sense of things. And they are plural. There can be different discourses, different ways of making sense of the same aspect of reality that serve different interests and will therefore be used in different social contexts. However abstract some discourses are, discourses ultimately always represent doings, van Leeuwen argues. Doing is the foundation of knowing, and social practices are the foundation of discourses.Studying children's books, newspaper reports, brochures and other texts, as well as photographs and children's toys, van Leeuwen investigates what can happen when practices are transformed into discourses and provides analytical tools for reconstructing discourses from texts.Throughout the book, van Leeuwen makes connections between sociological and linguistic or semiotic concepts and methods to ensure the social and critical relevance of his analytical categories.van Leeuwen's work has already been widely used by critical discourse analysts across the world. This volume will be a welcome guide for anyone looking for a form of discourse analysis that is both explicit and methodical, and critically incisive.

The Power Presenter: Technique, Style, and Strategy from America's Top Speaking Coach ReviewJerry Weissman breaks through a powerful myth about public speaking and offers an appealing alternative right at the start of this book. I'll rephrase it for you: Public speaking should not be required to mimic what a Broadway actor does on his or her day off!
This is really important for the many businesspeople who speak and have been browbeaten by well-meaning but ill-informed coaches to think that they need to summon up their Inner Thespian just to make an acceptable speech. They don't. I was once a speech coach and I was on the side of Weissman's philosophy. Namely, that a speech is not necessarily a Tony-Award-winning performance; but it _is_ a _conversation_ with your audience.
Drama ain't for everyone. But clear, connected, and ideally compelling communication is.
There's lots more in this book besides that stress-relieving idea, but it alone will make it worth your reading, especially if you are a man or woman in business. Here is why: Many people successful in business have already learned how to listen and how to speak persuasively, long before they needed to get in front of an audience. (Not all, but many.) That everyday persuasion skill is relatively easy to extend and expand on the platform, compared to the much more demanding (and often awkward) skill set that needs to be mastered from the dramatic arts.
I know a number of people in the professional speaking community and a number of coaches. One other good thing Weissman does that I haven't seen anyone else in his field do nearly as well or as thoroughly is, he meticulously researches and presents examples from famous people familiar to the reader (one chapter: Winston Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King, Billy Graham, Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama) and shows someone who has no mastery of oratorical skills, and no desire to have it, how to apply some lessons from the greats in their own presentations.
I've been speaking in front of groups professionally since 1987. I know from experience (not just as a coach, but as a speaker) that it makes a huge difference to have a model and approach that lets you be yourself in front of a group while still being interesting and worthwhile for your audience. This book gives you many tips and techniques to get you there. The Power Presenter: Technique, Style, and Strategy from America's Top Speaking Coach OverviewLearn the successful presentation techniques used in over 500 IPO road shows and featured in The Wall Street Journal and Fast Company.
Jerry Weissman is the presentations coach to Microsoft, Cisco Systems, and many of America's top executives, including founding Yahoo CEO Tim Koogle, Intuit founder Scott Cook, Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings, and many others. The San Jose Mercury News says that Weissman's IPO presentation coaching "is worth 10% on a company stock." Learn why your body language and voice are more important than your words, how to present with poise and confidence naturally, and how to connect with any audience emotionally. Filled with illustrative case studies of Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, John F. Kennedy, and many others, The Power Presenter will bring out the best in anyone who has to stand and deliver.
Readers of The Power Presenter will have access to video clips referenced in the book.

The Power of Framing: Creating the Language of Leadership (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Review
This is a sequel to Gail T. Fairhurst's earlier book, The Art of Framing (1996), and in both she is brilliant when explaining how to position ideas in a context, within a frame-of-reference. "Creating the Language of Leadership" is this later book's subtitle but by no means has she written this book solely for those who are C-level executives or members of a governing board. All organizations need leadership at all levels and in all areas. That is, they need people who recognize what must be done and understand how to get it done in collaboration with others who respect them and, more to the point, trust them.
The most successful leaders are those who attract and sustain the engagement of others with effective management of meaning. That is, they possess highly-developed verbal and non-verbal skills (e.g. body language, tone of voice). That was certainly true of Winston Churchill prior to and then throughout World War Two and, more recently, Martin Luther King, Jr. I was especially interested in what Fairhurst has to say about other leaders of lesser stature who nonetheless demonstrated great framing skills when sharing their thoughts and feelings on traumatic occasions. That is certainly true of President George Bush and Major Rudolph Giuliani after the attack of the World Trade Center. In their public statements, both shared harsh realities with effective communication as did Churchill and King before them.
More than two thousand years ago, Aristotle suggested that there are four levels of discourse: exposition (to explain), description (to make vivid), narration (to tell a story or explain a sequence), and argumentation (to convince with logic and/or evidence) . Each is most effective when whatever is shared is properly framed. Invoking a simile, it is presented in ways that resemble setting a table for a gourmet meal. Yes, framing creates a context within a frame-of-reference; it also ensures the desired impact as did President Roosevelt's "Fireside Chats" did during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
With rigor and eloquence, Fairhurst discusses framing as (a) a skill, (b) a science, (c) an art form, (d) an emotional connection, (e) an ethical connection, (f) a context for leadership, and (g) a set of specific applications. It is noteworthy that a set of practice exercises accompanies the narrative in each chapter so the Fairhurst can sustain an interactive relationship with her reader. She also concluded each chapter with a summary of key pints that will facilitate, indeed expedite periodic review of those key points later. Readers will also welcome the "Glossary of Framing Terms" (Pages 209-215) and "Notes" to the Preface and all eight chapters (Pages 217-237). There is an additional "bonus": the provision of Free Premium Content (i.e. 14 Framing Tools) that can be accessed online at www.josseybass.com/go/gailfairhurst, using the password "professional" when registering. Such content is a significant value-added benefit.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out three others. They are Robert B. Cialdini's Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition) and two authored by Annette Simmons: The Story Factor (2nd Revised Edition) and Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins: How to Use Your Own Stories to Communicate with Power and Impact. The Power of Framing: Creating the Language of Leadership (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview
Praise for The Power of Framing

"The primary work of leadership involves managing meaning through framing. Fairhurst shows that the way leaders use language to frame people, situations, and events has important consequences for the way individuals make sense of the world and their actions. The Power of Framing is an accessible and inspirational read for leaders who want to shape their organizations in ethically responsible ways."-J. Kevin Barge, professor, Texas A&M University
"An ideal book for MBA students and business professionals who are interested in specific tools for constructing leadership in their professional worlds. By focusing on the language toolbox of leadership, the book empowers anyone to construct leadership through talk and interaction." -Jolanta Aritz, associate professor, Center for Management Communication, USC Marshall School of Business
"Building on her earlier acclaimed work, and written in a highly accessible style, Fairhurst's thoughtful study provides us with a practical and highly relevant analysis of the power of framing language from a leadership perspective. This is a must-have book." -David Grant, professor of organizational studies, University of Sydney
"Communication is the most important element of leadership, and framing of the subject and situation is one of the most powerful tools available to leaders. Gail Fairhurst has created the handbook to help leaders do this right. A must-read for anyone in a leadership capacity." -Rich Kiley, venture capitalist, and retired Procter & Gamble marketing and HR executive
"To be an effective global manager, there is nothing more critical than understanding how to frame an issue so that you are effectively communicating and motivating in a culturally sensitive manner. This book will tune you into these issues and show you how to make certain your communication is properly interpreted by your audience." -Olga Jacob, general sales manager (Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg), American Airlines

Words and Minds: How We Use Language to Think Together ReviewThis book is about how human beings think together and, through the medium of language, jointly construct meaning. The author adopts a descriptive linguistic approach so if you are looking for a prescription for how to write or speak the `Queen's English' then I suggest you look elsewhere.
It begins by looking, albeit briefly, at Vygotsky's seminal work on the relationship between language and thought, and continues by stressing the importance of context in the making of meaning. It then discusses the uses to which language has been put in the pursuit of power, influence and control, continues by exploring the contribution that living in communities has made to the development of collective thought and ends by examining the varied forms of dialogue that occur in different situations.
Though quite a slight book and somewhat 'academic' in tone, it is, nevertheless, and as might be expected, very well written. More importantly, though, it manages, succinctly, to summarize the latest developments in linguistics and language study relating to the connections between language and thought and certainly highly recommended for anyone wanting a `taster' before delving into weightier tomes!
Words and Minds: How We Use Language to Think Together OverviewWords and Minds takes a lively and accessible look at how we use language to combine our mental resources and get things done. Examining everyday language and drawing on a wide range of research, but always with a light style, Neil Mercer provides a unified account of the relationship between thought and language.Mercer analyses real-life examples of language being used effectively, or otherwise, in many different settings, including workplaces and schools, the home, the internet and the courtroom, and offers practical insights into how we might improve our communication skills.Words and Minds will appeal to anyone interested in language and the psychology of everyday life.

The Power of Body Language Review
What you don't say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. As interesting as it is to learn to read others, it is also important to learn your own particular non verbal quirks: i.e.: Tonya's book teaches that although the reader may not be aware of it, people receive messages through body language (nonverbal signals) that can have a huge impact in a positive or negative way, just as the sound of your voice may make more of an impact (positively or negatively) than your actual words.
She teaches the reader to watch for body language signals may indicate truths that are not expressed in words. She also teaches the nuances and psychology of mirroring body language. The book clarifies the meanings of signals and nonverbal cues and shows the reader how to use this knowledge to his/her best advantage in every day situations, including the differences in male and female body language.
After reading this book, I found that watching political speeches more interesting, especially when the body language and spoken words do not match.
I would recommend this book to everyone.
The Power of Body Language OverviewTHE POWER OF BODY LANGUAGE is for everyone who wants to know what others are really saying and thinking - what is going on beneath the words. It's also for people who want to improve their own communication and improve how they are perceived by others in both their professional and personal lives. What makes Reiman's book on body language different from others on the market is its simplicity and practical nature. Essentially, it is a book you can use to enhance your everyday communication. After you read this book you will immediately understand what specific gestures, facial cues, body positions and body movements mean, and you will know how to use this information to understand others better and to express yourself more effectively.

The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help--or Hurt--How You Lead ReviewWe all know the message we see with our eyes doesn't always match the message we hear with our ears. For example, think of the role of a parent hearing their child say they didn't break the lamp, but the child's body language says otherwise. In her new book, THE SILENT LANGUAGE OF LEADERS, Carol Kinsey Goman sums this up with this statement, "body language is in the eye of the beholder".

This very intriguing book defines the subtitle - how body language can help - or hurt - how you lead. The book begins asking the question, "What does leadership look like?" and answers it with a succinct analysis of the 1960 presidential debates (the first televised debates) where Americans viewed a very nervous, defensive and unprepared looking Richard Nixon compared to a very calm, poised and well prepared Jack Kennedy. People who saw the debates on television easily recognized Kennedy as the clear winner, however those who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon came out ahead.
After developing what leadership looks like, Chapter 2 looks at negotiations and the importance of "engagement", as well as the body language that accompanies engagement or the lack of it. People put on their best "poker-face" when entering negotiations, but Goman teaches other things to look for that a poker-face cannot hide. A big portion of this chapter also deals with how to deal with someone that is disengaged. The chapter concludes with a very valuable set of body language guidelines for negotiators.
Every leader has had to deal at one time or another with leading change. Change can be hard to accept as it forces people out of their comfort zones but chapter 3 teaches how leaders can use their body language to improve buy-in. Effectively creating buy-in revolves around building an emotional connection and developing the WIFFM (what's in it for me) answer.
Next we find a short but very informative chapter on collaboration. Since much of business today is via rich technology such as video conferencing, this can make things such as collaboration more of a challenge than through conventional face-to-face methods. Here you'll find tips useful for all types of collaboration building.
Chapter 6 looks at gender and body language. I found this chapter a fascinating study in gender differences in the workplace. This chapter explains the mars/venus effect in the boardroom.
Many of us today find ourselves working across cultural boundaries. Working With Global Teams bridges many of those boundaries. Here we look not only at cultural differences, but also similarities that span all cultures. The author identifies 7 universal emotional expressions that we will see no matter where we are.

In Chapter 8, Goman brings in a multicultural panel to discuss 8 specific questions. I was amazed at the variation of answers to the questions. These very simple business related questions are also very specific and could save the reader from a very embarrassing situation. "What does it mean to be "on-time" for a meeting?", sounds like a very simple question, but has very differing answers depending on the culture involved. This chapter concludes with a "cheat-sheet" of sorts with abbreviated answers to each of the 8 questions for the 12 countries/cultures of the panelists.

The book concludes with a chapter on the Nonverbal Future of Leadership. Here we learn how Baby boomers changed how business is conducted; how Gen Xers have transformed those rules of business and what we can expect in the way of changes brought on as Gen Yers make their way into the workforce.

This book is invaluable for taking leadership to a higher level.
The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help--or Hurt--How You Lead OverviewA guide for using body language to lead more effectively
Aspiring and seasoned leaders have been trained to manage their leadership communication in many important ways. And yet, all their efforts to communicate effectively can be derailed by even the smallest nonverbal gestures such as the way they sit in a business meeting, or stand at the podium at a speaking engagement. In The Silent Language of Leaders, Goman explains that personal space, physical gestures, posture, facial expressions, and eye contact communicate louder than words and, thus, can be used strategically to help leaders manage, motivate, lead global teams, and communicate clearly in the digital age.
Draws on compelling psychological and neuroscience research to show leaders how to adjust their body language for maximum effect.
Stands out as the only book to address specifically how leaders can use body language to increase their effectiveness
Goman, a respected management coach, is widely considered as the expert in body language issues in the workplace

The Silent Language of Leaders will show readers how to take advantage of the most underused skills in the leadership toolkit—nonverbal skills—to improve their credibility and stay ahead of the curve.
