Management Information Systems for the Information Age ReviewI have used (and continue to use) this text for a college class on MIS. It's among the best textbooks I've ever come across. The book is filled with real world stories of real companies and how they have improved their competitive positions using IT. It also contains numerous 15-25 minute group activities and "On Your Own" assignments. Each chapter ends with a list of Key Terms, as well as several short answer and discussion questions.
Finally, and what I like most about the text, is a section on "Real HOT Group Projects." Many of these require creation of database reports or spread sheet pivot tables. So, you may find yourself diverting some time to teaching spreadsheet and database skills. But how can you teach the application of technology to managing and creating information, without actually using technology to do just that?Management Information Systems for the Information Age OverviewChapters of this title cover what instructors want students to know about MIS while Extended Learning Modules (XLMs) show students what they can do with MIS. A contemporary writing style and a wealth of examples engage students. Arranged with chapter opening cases that highlight how an organization has successfully implemented many of the chapter's concepts and chapter closing cases that help students apply what they just learned gives students the hands-on knowledge that is applicable in both their personal and professional experiences.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

A Message of Ancient Days ReviewI have used Houghton-Miffin Social Studies books in my Home School for two years now and I would highly recommend them because they are really well written. They bring History to life, they are colorful, down-to-earth, easy to understand and include time-lines. The lessons are easily divided up for you with headers of Lesson 1 (etc)--even without the teacher's edition and make studying and learning fun, easy, and exciting. These books really get you involved with the way things were and how and why they relate to you today.
Include in each chapter are focus points, key terms, lots of illustrations with full explanations, charts, colorful-detailed maps, and "Sliced view" of objects to see inside of things (like houses, buildings, etc). Though, I believe that you can sometimes find "workbooks" to go along with these books, I found them unnecessary as there are lots of activities included at the end of each lesson in the Review section, including: Focus questions, Connect questions, Citizenship, Critical thinking, and Writing Activities. Also along the side of the text are included Questions to provoke thought as you read the text, which are great discussion starters.
Also included in the chapters are sections for discussions and decisions which can be used for further research and reports. Finally Chapter Reviews make excellent "Tests" or "Quizzes" with a lot of open end and essay questions.
I am using these Houghton-Miffin Social Studies books again this year for teaching 6th grade (Ancient Days of world history) and already have my books for next year (World History Medieval Days).
My student is excited about history with these books and looks forward to our lessons--If they're fun and exciting, then they aren't just another subject he HAS to do, it's a subject he WANTS to do! How much better can you get than that?

Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice ReviewI am a practicing civil engineer (worked in both private and government practice) and Hansen and Zenobia's book is indeed a good reference for things practicing engineers typically learn after about 5 years on the job. Many engineering students (can) tend to focus on the technical aspect of engineering - absolutely necessary. But, something that is generally not taught (well) in school, or for which there are select references, are described well in this book. Hansen and Zenobia have done the research work for you - instead of learning the hard way on the job only, why not take the first step to learning things now? You would definitely be a step ahead of other entry level candidates. A must have in this difficult economy.
I am a practicing engineer for 13 years now, and such things as Ethics (chapter 3), Deliverables (chapter 6), Permitting (Chapter 8), legal (Chapter 11) and Communicating (Chapter 13) are apropos for today's multi-faceted and multi-tasking practicing engineers. No one tells you in school what a deliverable is, and that just because you can technically do something, doesn't mean you can legally. And communication - if you can't write or speak your ideas clearly - well, then learn. Those have been by far the most valuable skills I learned early (some in school, some just learned socially), and that have gotten me places in my career. May other things I learned via the "school of hard knocks" which can be career forming (in a bad way), and if you can avoid such knocks by having some understanding of engineering practice, you'd be better off for it. A book worth having on any engineering student / entry level professional's library.
This book was written by engineers for engineers - institutional knowledge on paper!

Creative Genius: An Innovation Guide for Business Leaders, Border Crossers and Game Changers ReviewCREATIVE GENIUS: AN INNOVATION GUIDE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, BORDER CROSSERS AND GAME CHANGERS provides a key to new ideas, technologies and directions and offers business leaders ideas for exploring creative places to further business. It introduces the Genius Lab, offering practice tools to locate these potentials and ensure best solutions from strategies of innovative companies from Apple to Samsung and IDEO. The concept of 'innovation drivers' is often talked about in business books, but this uses specifics and exercises on how to actually recognize - and act upon - the 'bigger picture', and is a pick for any innovation-oriented business collection!Creative Genius: An Innovation Guide for Business Leaders, Border Crossers and Game Changers OverviewTime and space. Genetics and robotics. Education and fashion. Possibilities limited only by our imaginations. The future is yours to create. Could you be the Leonardo da Vinci of our times?
Most ideas are incremental, quickly copied and suffocated by conventions. "Future back" thinking starts with stretching possibilities then makes them a reality "now forward". The best ideas emerge by seeing what everyone has seen, and thinking like nobody else. Newness occurs in the margins not the mainstream. Solutions emerge through powerful fusions of the best ideas into practical, useful concepts. Creative people rise up. Visionaries, border crossers and game changers. Engage your right brain, open your eyes, think more holistically... intuition rules.
From Apple to Blackberry, GE to Google, innovative companies stand out from the crowd not so much for their exceptional products, despite what one might assume, but for the way they challenge conventions, redefine markets, and change consumer expectations. Apple didn't just create the iPod; it envisioned the future of music and then made a product to service that future. And the same holds true for every highly innovative company. In Creative Genius, Peter Fisk presents ten tracks for innovation and provides business blueprints for making that innovation happen.Creative Genius is inspired by the imagination and perspective of Leonardo da Vinci, in order to drive creativity, design and innovation in more radical and powerful ways. It includes practical tools ranging from scenario planning and context reframing to accelerated innovation and market entry, plus 50 tracks, 25 tools, and 50 inspiring case studies.
Creative Genius is "the best and last" in the Genius series by bestselling author Peter Fisk. Others include Business Genius, Marketing Genius and Customer Genius.

It's educational, heartwarming and a joy to read!Dolphin Diaries: My 25 Years with Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas OverviewDr. Denise Herzing began her research with a pod of spotted dolphins in the 1980s. Now, almost three decades later, she has forged strong ties with many of these individuals, has witnessed and recorded them feeding, playing, fighting, mating, giving birth and communicating. Dolphin Diaries is an account of Herzing's research and her surprising findings on wild dolphin behavior, interaction, and communication. Readers will be drawn into the highs and lows—the births and deaths, the discovery of unique and personalized behaviors, the threats dolphins face from environmental changes, and the many funny and wonderful encounters Denise painstakingly documented over many years. Staying Power: Six Enduring Principles for Managing Strategy and Innovation in an Uncertain World (Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies) ReviewProfessor Cusumano's "Staying Power" is a major contribution in the field of business strategy.
I am in the business of technology and management strategy consulting and think his ideas have enormous value to any executive grappling with the implications and opportunities of cloud-computing enabled business. His six principles are easy to grasp. They are deceptively simple and are particularly powerful in a commercial and public sector business climate of austerity where new business models are emerging that will fuel our next growth cycle, but are disrupting incumbents. The introduction of cloud computing is beginning to have a disruptive effect on a wide range of business. Living through that disruption in day-to-day business can make it hard to see the bigger patterns at play and think through what the future state will look like. Professor Cusumano's elaboration of the platform/complementer services model with his excellent historical context and current market analysis makes it much clearer where we are headed in my industry and to seize emerging opportunities.
I purchased the book based on an Amazon recommendation and I am very grateful I did. The book is written in a more academic style than is typical of the more popular style business and management books. In fact, I picked it up and sat it down several times before committing to the book. It is not a book designed to skim. It requires concentration and focus to understand how Professor Cusumano has reached the conclusions he has. His ability to characterize the current disruptive innovation cycle in the information technology business using his analysis of the history of both the information technology and automotive industry is excellent. It is a fascinating story leading up to today's new business models.
Once I started really focusing on the book, I could not put it down. My copy is full of highlighter pen marks and 3M stickers. Kudos to Professor Cusumano for a valuable tool for business executives trying to figure out how to proactively take advantage of the cloud-enabled business models that are emerging. I hope that he extends this work with additional video and supplementary blog or presentation materials to continue to expand on his ideas and share more examples of the ideas in action. I have already begun converting his ideas into execution in my business.Staying Power: Six Enduring Principles for Managing Strategy and Innovation in an Uncertain World (Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies) OverviewBusiness news tends to focus on the travails of a handful of giants: Apple's iPad, the Toyota recall, the controversy over Google's book-digitization program. Whatever the day's headlines, though, most of these firms have been there before--up and down, written off and overpraised--yet they endured and triumphed. What is their secret? What is it that has lifted them to preeminence and allowed them to come out of each crisis stronger than before? In Staying Power, Michael A. Cusumano provides the answers. A bestselling business author and leading scholar, Cusumano has spent a quarter of a century studying the world's most successful companies--many of them from the inside, by serving as an advisor to more than one hundred firms. He identifies six critical principles that have driven the success of today's foremost companies, including Google, Intel, Apple, JVC, Toyota, and Microsoft. He argues that companies today must develop distinctive organizational capabilities, not just business strategies; focus on platforms and services, not just products; pull information from the market, responding to real-time changes in demand and competitive conditions, and not just push products out; achieve economies of scope, not just scale, by creating efficiencies across all a firm's activities; and acquire flexibility, in addition to efficiency, to quickly adapt to a volatile marketplace. Drawing on real-life examples, he illustrates how the best companies put these principles into practice, identifying precisely how these ideas have lead to concrete success time after time.Business books, the author notes, often promote short-lived fads in management thinking. But Staying Power is different. Written by a bestselling international expert, this book focuses on lasting success, analyzing the fundamental elements common to the leading competitors in the world today.

Introduction to Early Childhood Education ReviewIt's a little bit pricey, but you get excellent overview of the field in Essa's book.
She strives for economy over quantity, so you get reviews of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Malsow, and the other names that influence early childhood in a concise but informative format.
It's a great companion after J.A. Brewer's, Feeny/Moracik's, and G.S. Morrison's introductory early childhood texts.Introduction to Early Childhood Education OverviewINTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, 6/E, provides a comprehensive overview of early childhood education that is solidly based on current research and theories. Grounded in constructivist theory but also covering other perspectives, the text focuses on developmentally appropriate practices for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, early elementary schoolchildren, and children with disabilities. The majority of the text examines curriculum and the fostering of creativity, as well as physical, cognitive, language, and social development--and every facet of early childhood education is examined and explained. This edition also has been extensively revised and includes new standards and accountability in the field of early childhood education, a new emphasis on working with children from diverse backgrounds, and discussions of the role of families and forms of parent communication. With a strong emphasis on DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practice) along with completely updated references, examples from practitioners, and new video offerings, this book has become the most comprehensive resource available.

A Field Guide for the Sight-Impaired Reader: A Comprehensive Resource for Students, Teachers, and Librarians Review"Comprehensive" starts the subtitle, and Comprehensive it is! Too many print-handicapped people are forced to stumble through the multi-layered service system, picking up clues almost by accident until they "strike gold" in the person of a skilled counselor or librarian. Here is a full set of Tools for Learning, along with a user's guide! Important for every visually impaired student and family, vital for every school or school system's Special Education department. No less useful for those with serious learning disorders like dyslexia, or with challenging physical disabilities that prevent the easy handling of printed material. Yes, addresses and phone numbers may change; new organizations may develop; but this is a book that will be USED and that will repay its purchase many times over.A Field Guide for the Sight-Impaired Reader: A Comprehensive Resource for Students, Teachers, and Librarians Overview
The first reference book written for the sight-impaired student and those who serve their needs, A Field Guide for the Sight-Impaired Reader explains how to locate, obtain, and integrate all forms of aid to construct a world of reading equal to that of the fully sighted reader. It profiles the major blind service organizations; explores specialized formats such as Braille, large print, and electronic texts; and shows what technology readers require and where to find it. It provides comprehensive lists of audio and large print publishers, a state-by-state listing of resource agencies for the blind, and valuable internet resources to assist students and their teachers and librarians in obtaining the texts they need to succeed in both academic and pleasure reading.

Beginning with thorough coverage of the national organizations in place for visually handicapped readers and how they can assist both students and librarians, A Field Guide for the Sight-Impaired Reader outlines the types of technology available to readers and the companies that manufacture it. Available software, braille resources, large print resources, and internet web sites are all discussed in detail, with contact information. Also included are reading strategies for a variety of academic subject areas, a detailed listing of state resources with addresses, phone numbers, and web sites, an exhaustive list of audio publishers, and a list of books compiled from recommended reading lists such as the American Library Association's Outstanding Books for the College Bound. A discussion of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its impact on libraries is provided, as well as funding sources for librarians who want to provide more materials and technology for their sight-impaired patrons than their budgets might allow. With the encouragement and resources provided here, sight-impaired students who felt the world of reading was closed off to them can now create a reading life as rich as that of any fully sighted student.

Reading to Learn in the Content Areas ReviewTo quote the "official" reviewer, "She has experience teaching at the elementary, middle, high school and adult levels." Not sure if that means the author was a really good teacher (seems she moved around a lot) or not.
Much of the content in this text is/was of the "common sense" variety recognized by most experienced teachers. The main theme of the text centers on a "P A R" framework (Preparation, Assistance, Reflection) approach to reading/literacy; reminding this reviewer of the teacher's adage, "Tell them what you're going to tell them, TELL THEM, and tell them what you told them."
Younger teachers, however, may find the techniques to be new and useful to them. BUT (always a "but" - right?), many of the studies cited in this "latest edition" are 20 +/- years old (unreasonable for such a highly priced book).
I'm not sure that our "younger" teachers can afford this book, nor should they, for a work partly based on studies done at the time they were still in elementary school.Reading to Learn in the Content Areas OverviewWith READING TO LEARN IN THE CONTENT AREAS, Eighth Edition, future educators discover how they can teach students to use reading, discussion, and writing as vehicles for learning in any discipline. The book explores how the increased availability of computers, instructional software, social media, and Internet resources--as well as the rise of electronic literacy in general--have affected the ways children learn and create meaning from their world. The authors' unique lesson framework for instruction, PAR (Preparation/Assistance/Reflection), extends throughout the book. A reader-friendly presentation, balanced approach, strong research base, and inclusion of real-life examples from a variety of subject areas and grade levels have helped make this resource one of the most popular and effective books on the market.

Many new discussions have been added, including technology's influences on the societal system, evolutionary theory and William James's theory of consciousness, adoption as an alternative to childbearing, the fact that toddlers aren't getting enough physical activity to support optimal physical development, the relationship between playing violent video games and moral development, the reduction in unstructured child-initiated play time, how sibling relationships influence social development, and ways to help socially anxious children increase their sense of closeness to friends.
Other new discussions cover early adolescence as a time of positive strides toward maturity, the interaction of cognition and emotion and how the brain processes emotions, how hostile and aggressive parenting can lead to increased feelings of alienation for early adolescent children, four contexts for predicting alcohol misuse (parents, peers, school, neighborhood), the concept of career decision-making self efficacy, the rationale for calling the stage later adolescence rather than emerging adulthood, and role experimentation as a cycling of commitment formation and commitment reevaluation.
Additional new content explains how the transition into adulthood has changed, speed dating and online dating as new ways of finding a partner, the communal norm and the exchange norm as explanations for how relationships are sustained in the early years of marriage, workers who experience hostility from their supervisors, an international comparison of poverty rates in 21 countries (noting the relatively limited resources dedicated to workers in the United States), online social networking, and, in a new section, the benefits of sleep in early adulthood.
Coverage of middle adulthood includes new discussions of sex discrimination, age discrimination, race discrimination, and sexual harassment; and elder-hood coverage includes new discussions of insomnia, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.

Additional Features
Two chapters are devoted to the theories of development: one focuses on the major theorists such as Piaget and Vygotsky, and a second is devoted to the psychosocial theories of Erikson and Havighurst that are used in the rest of the book.
Every chapter helps to guide student study with a chapter-opening outline and brief list of objectives, an integrated case study with accompanying analysis and critical-thinking questions, an Applied Topic, a chapter-ending summary organized by learning objectives, Questions for Further Reflection, and specific references to the optional Life-Span Development: A Case Book that is available with the main text.
The authors' organizing conceptual framework of psychosocial theory highlights the continuous interaction and integration of individual competencies with the demands and resources of culture. Psychosocial theory attempts to explain human development across the life span, especially patterned change in ego development, which is reflected in self-understanding, social relationships, and worldview.
One or more case studies in each chapter, accompanied by Critical Thinking and Case Analysis questions, illuminate concepts.
A strong multicultural perspective--including discussions of cultural practices and reviews of cross-national and interethnic research--is interwoven throughout the text in the narrative, in application boxes, and in first-person accounts. The multicultural aspect of the text is a result of the psychosocial point of view, in which the social-cultural context of development is fundamental to the process of development.

Ego: The Fall of the Twin Towers and the Rise of an Enlightened Humanity ReviewI enjoyed the psychology and scientific studies that point to the evolution of consciousness, and that this was presented in a way almost everyone can understand. If you have never read about the evolution of consciousness (C. Graves, Spiral Dynamics, K. Wilber, A. Maslow, L. Kohlberg, etc.) this is a good place to start.
I did not like the way the events of 9/11 were used throughout. It seemed to be their "sensational" marketing tool. I suspect I will get a lot of "dislikes" for that statement.
I wish I had waited until it was cheaper to purchase, or available at the library.Ego: The Fall of the Twin Towers and the Rise of an Enlightened Humanity OverviewBaumann and Taft skillfully weave eyewitness accounts of 9/11 with insights from evolutionary theory, neuroscientific studies on brain plasticity and emotion, genetics, and other new areas of research. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in how science can help in understanding both the human capacity for horrific action and the clear reasons for optimism about our collective future.Alfred W. Kaszniak, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Neurology & Psychiatry, University of Arizona Ego: The Fall of the Twin Towers and the Rise of a New Humanity by Peter Baumann and Michael W. Taft is the first book to explore the positive evolutionary potential hidden in one of the most destructive events in history. In their examination of the evolutionary implications of 9/11 and its aftermath, the authors contend we are not falling into the grip of a new dark age at all, rather we are on the verge of a much brighter one as the Darwinian process of natural selection continues to advance humankind.Peter Baumann began his career as a member of the massively successful 1970s band Tangerine Dream and later founded the Private Label record label. Instead of being derailed by early fame and fortune, he asked himself this question in his late forties: "If I have only 10,000 days left on the planet, what will I do with that time?"; Baumann put his resources to work exploring the source of human conflict and suffering with some of the greatest living scientists and students of consciousness, assembling a top-notch interdisciplinary think tank in the process. Michael W. Taft, a long-term student of meditation, psychology, and the history of evolution, brings rigorous research to the subject of human experience. The authors inquiry led them to the roots of human suffering: the ego. That the ego underlies our problems as a species may come as no surprise. But a deeper look into the ego's origin and history is full of unexpected revelations:The modern human is dominated by a Stone Age brain; Energy consumption and the environmental crisis is nothing more than the evolutionary drive to survive gone haywire; Evolution has wired us to be riveted to bad news, bad outcomes, and worst-case scenarios; When beliefs are challenged it triggers a life or death stance in the human nervous system; Emotions are mostly physical, not mental The self we identify with "along with its biases and beliefs" turns out to be an evolutionary tool that made its first appearance some 50,000 years ago during what's called the conceptual revolution, arguably the biggest developmental leap in human history. The emerging ego accompanied our ability to construct complex tools, create art, and redefine social structure. For the first time as a species, we were able to imagine the future, consider the thoughts of others, and picture ourselves in our own minds. The ego is a cognitive trick of natural selection intended to insure the survival of the individual. Baumann and Taft say the problem comes when we take the ego's conceptualization of reality as the truth about who we actually are. The ego has locked humanity in a trap that Albert Einstein identified: A human being is a part of a whole, called by us "universe", a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison.Using the latest research from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, psychology, and paleontology, Baumann and Taft show that modern humanity may be on the verge of an expansion of cognitive abilities akin to the development of the ego. This next step will free the human mind to see beyond the confines of the prison, and open the vast potential of conscious awareness.

Microstyle: The Art of Writing Little ReviewI bought Microstyle after reading the NY Times review, and found it to be an interesting but slightly repetitive survey of short marketing messages and funny one-liners.
Most of the examples in the book are advertising slogans, mixed in with far too many fake headlines from The Onion and selections from Twitter Wit and the FakeAPStyleGuide. I kept waiting for a discussion of more substantive micro-communication. There was no mention of Iran, China, or other places where people have been experimenting with short bursts of text to organize, communicate with the world and avoid censorship. Surely the author has seen instructive examples of that type of communication, and I think the book would benefit by moving beyond branding, marketing and humor.
Highlights were the three short chapters on rhythm, poetic patterns and sonority, but in general this book made me want to re-read Strunk & White. For a more elegantly curated collection of microstyle, try Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style.
(As an aside, I bought the Kindle version because I could not stand to look at the book jacket. Microstyle applies to graphic design as well, and the jacket design is a clunky and nonsensical mixture of metaphors: ruled notebook paper, two kinds of typewriter text, digital type and a stylized magnifying glass, which might also represent a search icon. The author is able to elegantly dissect mixed metaphor in text, but his insights should have been aggressively applied to the cover.)
Microstyle: The Art of Writing Little Overview
A field guide for the age of the incredible shrinking message.
Some of the most important verbal messages we craft are also the shortest: headlines, titles, sound bites, brand names, domain names, slogans, taglines, company mantras, email signatures, bullet points. These miniature messages depend not on the elements of style but rather on the atoms of style. They require microstyle. Branding consultant Christopher Johnson here reveals the once-secret knowledge of poets, copywriters, brand namers, political speechwriters, and other professional verbal miniaturists. Each chapter discusses one tool that helps miniature messages grab attention, communicate instantly, stick in the mind, and roll off the tongue. As he highlights examples of those tools used well, Johnson also examines messages that miss the mark, either by failing to use a tool or by using it badly. Microstyle shows readers how to say the most with the least, while offering a lively romp through the historic transformation of mass media into the media of the personal.

The Tell-Tale Brain: A Neuroscientist's Quest for What Makes Us Human ReviewThe preeminent neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran has, without a doubt, raised the bar in this, his newest book, The Tell-Tale Brain. He states in the preface, "Readers who have assiduously followed my whole oeuvre over the years will recognize some of the case histories that I presented in my previous books, Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind and A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness: From Impostor Poodles to Purple Numbers. These same readers will be pleased to see that I have new things to say about even my earlier findings and observations. Brain science has advanced at an astonishing pace over the past fifteen years, lending fresh perspectives on - well, just about everything. After decades of floundering in the shadow of the "hard" sciences, the age of neuroscience has truly dawned, and this rapid progress has directed and enriched my own work." And what an enriching book this is!
In a nutshell, what Ramachandran does is to discover how the normal brain works by studying individuals with abnormal neurological conditions. In this respect, his books are similar to Oliver Sacks (The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales and The Mind's Eye). Some of the disorders Ramachandran discusses are: Agnosia, Anosognosia, Autism, Capgras Syndrome, Cotard Syndrome, and Synesthesia, to name a few. However, one of the finest things about Ramachandran's book is that this doesn't account for everything in the book; it's not simply Ramachandran rolling out one bizarre disorder after another. He hits the subject matter from every angle - anatomically, evolutionarily, psychologically, and philosophically. It's exceedingly evident that Ramachandran knows all of the topics - inside-and-out - in regards to mind, brain, and consciousness. And still, the writing was never over my head. It was just as Ramachandran said it would be, "I presume some degree of interest in science and curiosity about human nature, but I do not presume any sort of formal scientific background or even familiarity with my previous works. I hope this book proves instructive and inspiring to students of all levels and backgrounds, to colleagues in other disciplines, and to lay readers with no personal or professional stake in these topics."
Ramachandran states in the Epilogue, "One of the major themes in the book - whether talking about body image, mirror neurons, language evolution, or autism - has been the question of how your inner self interacts with the world (including the social world) while at the same time maintaining its privacy. The curious reciprocity between self and others is especially well developed in humans and probably exists only in rudimentary form in the great apes. I have suggested that many types of mental illness may result from derangements in this equilibrium. Understanding such disorders may pave the way not only for solving the abstract (or should I say philosophical) problem of the self at a theoretical level, but also for treating mental illness."
In conclusion, I strongly recommend reading this book. The writing is great, the style is flawless, and Ramachandran's self deprecating humor really keeps the material lively. Every issue in contemporary Mind/Brain/Consciousness literature has been addressed in one way or another and I think everyone would have something to gain from reading it. I would put this book right on par with Antonio Damasio's, Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain, and Paul Nunez's, Brain, Mind, and the Structure of Reality. Along with V.S. Ramachandran, these men, each in his own way, is pointing the way for the entire Neuroscientific community..."The question of how neurons encode meaning and evoke all the semantic associations of an object is the holy grail of neuroscience, whether you are studying memory, perception, art, or consciousness." Ramachandran's book is not to be missed! The Tell-Tale Brain: A Neuroscientist's Quest for What Makes Us Human Overview
