Artificial Life Models in Software ReviewRemember Conway's Game of Life? Surely you must, if you are interested in this book. The Game has been around since the 70s. The editors have cultivated recent research papers that demonstrate how far the field has advanced. Reinforced by some pretty colour plates that depict artificial entities [dare we call them living?] in some surroundings. These include the modelling of bee flights through a garden, and simulated trajectories of a group of bacteria.
Nor is the Game of Life ignored. One plate shows it in three dimensions. The Game is played in 2 dimensions, with time as the third dimension. An obvious choice that gives interesting trajectories of the cells.
The narrative adds to the illustrations. By describing a variety of computer simulations [worlds?]. Where the experimenter can tweak many parameters, and watch her world unfold. Some worlds are impressively rich in complexity of observed behaviours.
The only drawback in the book is its skimpy index. A mere two pages. It should have been more detailed.Artificial Life Models in Software OverviewThe advent of powerful processing technologies and the advances in software development tools have drastically changed the approach and implementation of computational research in fundamental properties of living systems through simulating and synthesizing biological entities and processes in artificial media. Nowadays realistic physical and physiological simulation of natural and would-be creatures, worlds and societies becomes a low-cost task for ordinary home computers. The progress in technology has dramatically reshaped the structure of the software, the execution of a code, and visualization fundamentals. This has led to the emergence of novel breeds of artificial life software models, including three-dimensional programmable simulation environment, distributed discrete events platforms and multi-agent systems. This second edition reflects the technological and research advancements, and presents the best examples of artificial life software models developed in the World and available for users.

Practical Risk Assessment for Project Management ReviewThe ideal audience for this book is relatively narrow, consisting of readers who meet the following two criteria: (1) new to risk management techniques, and (2) using Palisade @Risk. In fact, this book comes close to being a tutorial on using @Risk, which is a popular commercial product that works within Microsoft Excel and project management programs.
If you are new to advanced techniques in project risk management you'll like the way the author succinctly covers all of the key elements of project risk assessment, project finance forecasting, and simulation and modeling. Considering the complexity of the subject area, and the fact that both probability and simulation techniques are covered, the author does a remarkable job of conveying the wide range of topics in a scant 134 pages. I especially liked the generous use of graphs and examples, and the way each topic was broken down into easy-to-grasp facts and steps.
However, even without @Risk you can learn much about risk assessment from this book, including a refresher on probability distributions, how to perform an assessment using manual techniques, and modeling and simulation with an emphasis on Monte Carlo simulation.
The only problem I have with this book is that it's out of date with respect to @Risk, which has evolved into a much more capable tool since this book was first published 7 years ago. Since one of the this book's strengths is the way it teaches how to apply @Risk to real world project risk assessment, the fact that it's out of date with respect to the software version diminishes its value.Practical Risk Assessment for Project Management OverviewIn the estimating, planning and management of any project, large or small, an understanding of the impact of risk is critical. This book explains how the growing number of people choosing to or forced to organise their work as projects can make realistic assessments of the uncertainty affecting costs, timescale and revenue, before commitments are made. A clear analysis of the role of uncertainty is combined in this concise and practical handbook with simple, cost-effective techniques for measuring and modelling the overall risk to a project's budget and schedule. There is advice and help here for the whole project team, including project managers; bid managers; project sales professionals; planners; estimators; managers running a project-based business; and consultants and auditors advising a projects business. Drawn from the author's extensive experience on projects ranging in scale from a few man-months to hundreds of man-years, the book will beelevant to anyone involved in a project-based business. Examples are presented as simple models, built in spreadsheets using the @Risk software package. No more than basic knowledge of Lotus 1-2-3?? or Excel?? will be required by the reader.

FPGA Design: Best Practices for Team-based Design ReviewI am started using FPGAs over 15 years ago, and back then, you just started writing HDL and got the thing working.
This approach simply doesn't work anymore - the FPGAs are too big, designs are much more complicated, need for design reuse, need to incorporate FPGA vendor or third party IP, incremental compilers, and so on. Plus, multi-person design teams are often the norm.
This is the first book I know of that walks you through all of these issues, and more, with common sense advice how to approach FPGA design systematically. The book is easy to read (I read the whole thing on a coast-to coast flight), and even for advanced FPGA designers or managers, I guarantee you will find some new ideas and suggestions on how to improve your design flow.
Lastly, despite the fact the author works for Altera, the book is completely nuetral on FPGA vendor choice, and doesn't make any sales pitches on behalf of Altera.FPGA Design: Best Practices for Team-based Design OverviewThis book describes best practices for successful FPGA design. It is the result of the author's meetings with hundreds of customers on the challenges facing each of their FPGA design teams. By gaining an understanding into their design environments, processes, what works and what does not work, key areas of concern in implementing system designs have been identified and a recommended design methodology to overcome these challenges has been developed. This book's content has a strong focus on design teams that are spread across sites. The goal being to increase the productivity of FPGA design teams by establishing a common methodology across design teams; enabling the exchange of design blocks across teams. overage includes the complete FPGA design flow, from the basics to advanced techniques.

Embedded Core Design with FPGAs Review"Embedded Core Design with FPGAs" written by Dr. Zainalabedin Navabi is an excellent book to learn FPGA based Embedded system design. This book covers everything a person needs to know for learning FPGAs.
It explains logic design concepts first. Even if a person is very new to the digital field, he/she will be able to start right from there. Then the chapter named RTL design with Verilog, gives an opportunity to learn a hardware description language named Verilog right from this book. This chapter is so well written that no other separate book on verilog is necessary to learn.
This book explains very well how the Field Programmable Devices work. It has lots of examples to work with and program with Altera UP3 and DE2 board. These examples have made this book a unique one, because most of the books only provide examples, but this one shows how one can really use an FPGA board and provides step by step procedure to run those example in the FPGA board.
This book also has a chapter to design with Embedded processors. Embedded design steps were shown brilliantly with examples like design of a microcontroller etc.
Overall, this is a very good book on Embedded system design which covers topics like logic design to learning verilog to using FPGA boards to designing embedded processors.Embedded Core Design with FPGAs OverviewThis is a complete toolkit for designing embedded cores and utilizing those cores in an embedded system. Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate ReviewThere is more significance to the title than one may initially assume. Some "play" can be taken much too seriously as when overzealous parents scream at their children as they begin to compete in organized sports; other "play" is not treated seriously enough as when a corporation discourages (perhaps even punishes) innovative thinking unless it has an immediate and favorable impact on the bottom line. Many executives, thus abused, may then vent their frustrations by behaving boorishly at a Little League game.
In the Foreword, Tom Peters quotes Schrage's assertion that "Innovative prototypes generate innovative teams. Not vice versa." Peters then observes that, in Serious Play, the "big idea" is that "the prototyping process becomes the scaffolding" for an enterprise's approach to innovation. As Schrage explains, "I have always enjoyed rehearsals more than performances." I suggest that you keep that statement clearly in mind as you proceed through the book. It reveals much about Schrage's perspective on the correlations between prototypes and innovation.
Here is how the book is organized: Part I: Getting Real, Part II: Model Behavior, and Part III:S(t)imulating Innovation. Schrage then provides a User's Guide and Bibliography. Throughout the book, he shares a wealth of real-world experience which explains what innovation is, and, what it can help to accomplish, not only with the design of a new product or service but also with the formulation of new and better ways for people to work together. The key is simulation; moreover, "not just playing with representations of ideas" (lots of ideas, the more the better) but "playing with the various versions of representations of ideas."
Near the end of the final chapter, Schrage poses a number of critically important questions, suggesting that the "best hope for answering these questions, or coping with their implications, is to build or grow models and play with them seriously." The world's best companies simulate to innovate. For example: American Airlines, Boeing, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric, IBM, IDEO, Walt Disney, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, and Royal Dutch Shell. Schrage believes that the creative tensions between innovators who design and innovators who evolve "will likely result in breakthroughs in products, services, and their yet-to-be-anticipated hybrids." So, why not prototype how to prototype? Why not play simulation games which reveal new and better ways to simulate?
Tom Peters describes Serious Play as "simply the best book on innovation I've ever read." I agree. Perhaps you will, also.Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate Overview

Modeling & Simulation-Based Data Engineering: Introducing Pragmatics into Ontologies for Net-Centric Information Exchange ReviewIt is often the case that a new area of inquiry, comprised of elements from seemingly disparate disciplines, yields surprising insights. Zeigler's and Hammonds's effort is no exception. While linguistics has from time to time informed mathematics and computer science, to my knowledge little has been done to date towards the application of semantics and pragmatics to this type of data exchange.
The prose is concise, clear, and conversational. Given the complexity of the two topics and the more or less mutual exclusivity of their lexicons, readers whose experience has been acquired only in the one or the other of these two disciplines will nevertheless quickly become comfortable in this discussion. The authors provide many examples to illustrate their line of reasoning, all drawn from a wide variety of sources.
As an IT professional with 15 years' experience and an advanced degree in a foreign language, I found this book satisfying, illuminating, and provocative. While it is intended to address a specific engineering problem, its implications extend well beyond its stated purview. Heartily recommended for those who would like to think about the synergies of data engineering and pragmatics, and also for those who want to think about what might be beyond the horizon.Modeling & Simulation-Based Data Engineering: Introducing Pragmatics into Ontologies for Net-Centric Information Exchange OverviewData Engineering has become a necessary and critical activity for business, engineering, and scientific organizations as the move to service oriented architecture and web services moves into full swing. Notably, the US Department of Defense is mandating that all of its agencies and contractors assume a defining presence on the Net-centric Global Information Grid. This book provides the first practical approach to data engineering and modeling, which supports interoperabililty with consumers of the data in a service- oriented architectures (SOAs). Although XML (eXtensible Modeling Language) is the lingua franca for such interoperability, it is not sufficient on its own. The approach in this book addresses critical objectives such as creating a single representation for multiple applications, designing models capable of supporting dynamic processes, and harmonizing legacy data models for web-based co-existence. The approach is based on the System Entity Structure (SES) which is a well-defined structure, methodology, and practical tool with all of the functionality of UML (Unified Modeling Language) and few of the drawbacks. The SES originated in the formal representation of hierarchical simulation models. So it provides an axiomatic formalism that enables automating the development of XML dtds and schemas, composition and decomposition of large data models, and analysis of commonality among structures.Zeigler and Hammond include a range of features to benefit their readers. Natural language, graphical and XML forms of SES specification are employed to allow mapping of legacy meta-data. Real world examples and case studies provide insight into data engineering and test evaluation in various application domains. Comparative information is provided on concepts of ontologies, modeling and simulation, introductory linguistic background, and support options enable programmers to work with advanced tools in the area. The website of the Arizona Center for Integrative Modeling and Simulation, co-founded by Zeigler in 2001, provides links to downloadable software to accompany the book.* The only practical guide to integrating XML and web services in data engineering* Introduces linguistic levels of interoperability for effective information exchange* Covers the interoperability standards mandated by national and international agencies * Complements Zeigler's classic THEORY OF MODELING AND SIMULATION

Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models, Second Edition ReviewThis book covers many facets of the task of creating testbenches. However, it doesn't seem to follow a very well thought out plan, and there are holes in the coverage.
Most of the book is a 'tips and tricks' coverage of how to get each language to do what it wasn't designed to do. He walks through various situations and says that something is easy to do in Specman (shows a short code fragment), but then goes into long detail in how to get around VHDL's limitations and get the same result. I realize these are probably pretty cool tricks, but not at all the approach for me (a beginner to writing sizable testbenches). If he kept up the coverage of all 4 languages throughout, it might be useful, but the focus shifts from language to language at whim. You won't learn how to write a testbench as much as you will learn some pitfalls to avoid.
One more gripe before I get to the parts I liked. Each chapter ends with a summary. The summary lists the author's favorite tricks, not a summary of the whole chapter. I found these to be not at all helpful in either deciding whether to read the chapter, or as a review of what was covered.
I did like the explanations of:
-- The importance of verification (now I know why I was hired)
-- Overview of all the lingo (I can sound like I know what I'm talking about now, even if I don't)
-- Merits of the various types of coverage (code/functional/transition ...)
-- Aspect Oriented Programming (e) and why it is useful (cool stuff!)
-- Using coverage to drive a random bench
That is only about 10% of the book, however. That 10% was really pretty good.
I see one of the other reviewers complained about lack of downloadable sourcecode. It is available at www.janick.bergeron.com/wtb along with an extensive errata list (I'd recommend taking the hour or so and marking up your book before reading).
I still give the book 3 stars, since it is the only verification book I've found, and I did really like parts of it. I read the book front to back, and would not particularly recommend this to others. Pick the parts that interest you, and skip the rest.Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models, Second Edition OverviewThe Second Edition of Writing Testbenches, Functional Verification of HDL Models presents the latest verification techniques to produce fully functional first silicon ASICs, systems-on-a-chip (SoC), boards and entire systems.Topics included in the new Second Edition: *Discussions on OpenVera and e; *Approaches for writing constrainable random stimulus generators; *Strategies for making testbenches self-checking; *A clear blueprint of a verification process that aims for first time success; *Recent advances in functional verification such as coverage-driven verification process; *VHDL and Verilog language semantics; *The semantics are presented in new verification-oriented languages;*Techniques for applying stimulus and monitoring the response of a design; *Behavioral modeling using non-synthesizeable constructs and coding style; *Updated for Verilog 2001.
