Vital Factors: The Secret to Transforming Your Business - And Your Life (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewI was mostly surprised about what this book isn't about. It's not about Vital Factors really. It's about the people that have implemented the Map/Vital Factors (and many other branded terms) processes. 98% of the book is stories of how businesses have fared on the system. Very few pages are given to exactly how to impliment the system yourself.
That said, the purpose of the book is to lead you to Map consulting. For that I give it a three star rating, because I think the title and the summary are misleading. It's a book that convinces you quite well that you need the system, but doesn't focus how to do that. Should the last third have been instruction and method, I would have easily awarded this book 5 stars. Easy!
Even though the book gets a low rating, the success stories they present are mind-blowing. The companies they focus on (like Cold Stone) increased their company size ten fold. It's strange that company profiles only date back to 2000, besides one or two, but I am still convinced it's a good system.
After reading this book I can't tell if the map system is extremely simple or not. There's just not much about the Map system in the book. I would very much like to implement it in my companies so I will research it more before hiring Map. I am guessing that will start around $20k to have Map consult with us. It's a big leap from a $10 book you see.
Surprisingly absent was a focus on general processes. E-Myth handles that well, but that doesn't address Vital Factors (priorities) like this book does.
Please, let's have a book ABOUT the Map system. I am not one that needs to go to a seminar or hire a consultant to initiate change. Good book, but I can't recommend it fully until that is added.
To Mr Lee Froschheiser: I am sorry to be so negative about your book. Should you be interested in adjusting it to meet these concerns, I will happily issue 5 stars and hand out 30 copies to my network. If one of the Vital Factors measurements behind writing the book is increased company exposure, I think I have offered a simple solution to help that factor improve. On the other hand, I understand not wanting to give away all of Map's secrets. Sure would be good reading though!Vital Factors: The Secret to Transforming Your Business - And Your Life (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

Release Your Brilliance: The 4 Steps to Transforming Your Life and Revealing Your Genius to the World ReviewFrom the beginning of this book we are reminded that each of us is born brilliant. Not just OK, and not just special but brilliant like a polished gemstone.... a diamond. The problem with us lies not in the fact that we are born brilliant; the problem lies in the fact that we tend to let our brilliance die down and dim as the years go by.Much causes our brilliance to lose it's glimmer, outside sources dim its beauty, others cause us to become less of an eye-catching jewel, but according to author Simon T. Bailey, that does not have to happen. That is not something that we have to put up with in our lives. Our brilliance can be as bright and free from imperfections as we grow older as it is when we are young. The author knows of what he speaks. He spent much of his life struggling to find the brilliance within and it was only with deep introspection and study that he came up with the concepts within this book, concepts that are easily added to ones life to rediscover and maintain that brilliance that lies within us.... some of us having it lying dormant for years.

I would suggest this book for anyone who doubts his or her brilliance in life. For anyone who feels their brilliance dimming and who desires the help and guidance to find that brilliance once again and let it shine from deep within. It is a book well worth reading and one that will aid the reader in discovering that which I suspect has been buried for a long time. I know it did me. And lest one feel this review is but one woman's opinion, may I mention, I received not one but two of these books as Christmas gifts from well wishing friends and relatives. Obviously Mr Bailey is doing something right and is reaching far more readers than just myself.
Release Your Brilliance: The 4 Steps to Transforming Your Life and Revealing Your Genius to the World Overview
Each of us is born brilliant. Then we spend the rest of our lives having our brilliance buried by people, circumstances, and experiences. Eventually, we forget that we ever had genius and special talents, and our brilliance is locked away in a vault deep within. So we settle for who we are, instead of striving for who we were meant to be.

Release Your Brilliance provides the combination to the vault where your brilliance is kept. After struggling for thirty-two years with disillusion, defeat, and despair, author Simon T. Bailey cracked the code to personal transformation, turning his life around and becoming a highly successful entrepreneur, respected family man and community leader. Using the metaphor that we're all diamonds in the rough, Simon shares the four key steps to cut and polish the gem that is you in order to reawaken your genius, reignite your internal light, and release your potential. He guides your transformation with interactive tools such as Personal Appraisal exercises, Diamond Polishing action steps, and true stories of Living Diamonds. Join the thousands of individuals and organizations worldwide who've sat down with Simon and learned to create lasting change and release their brilliance!

Human Development: A Life-Span View ReviewI purchased the kindle edition. The only issue I have had with this edition is that the charts and tables are difficult to view. When using the kindle, you can not zoom in close enough to read the charts without squinting. When I view that charts on kindle for PC it is a little easier to read but still pretty difficult.
Overall it is a good text book, but if you are considering purchasing the kindle edition, I would not recommend it.Human Development: A Life-Span View OverviewBalanced coverage of the entire life span is just one thing that distinguishes HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: A LIFE-SPAN VIEW, 5TH EDITION. With its comprehensive, succinct, and applied coverage, the text has proven its ability to capture students' interest while introducing them to the issues, forces, and outcomes that make us who we are. Robert V. Kail's expertise in childhood and adolescence, combined with John C. Cavanaugh's extensive research in gerontology, result in a book with a rich description of all life-span stages and important topics. A modified chronological approach traces development in sequential order from conception through late life, while also dedicating several chapters to key topical issues. This organization also allows the book to be relatively briefer than other texts--a benefit given the enormous amount of information covered in the course.

Peak Performance: Aligning the Hearts and Minds of Your Employees Review"This book is concerned with energizing people for performance and the different successful paths to that end". Jon R. Katzenbach writes, "It describes how each path concentrates management attention on worker fulfillment to harness the emotions of many people in sustaining a higher-performing workforce. This is a different challenge than simply motivating people to meet demanding financial performance objectives. The latter is what most companies do, and it implies setting unambiguous goals, establishing clear measures, and holding people individually accountable for results (consequence management). Logical, rational motivation is certainly a good thing, but it is no match for engaged, emotional commitment...Energizing people for performance elevates the game significantly, to the point that many employees go well beyond leaders' expectations, individual accountabilities, financial resuts, and short-term market objectives. This book describes how to unleash the full individual and collectve potential of people to achieve and sustain higher levels of performance than the workers themselves thought possible, than management or customers expected, and than competitors can realistically achieve. Unleashing the full potential of people is undeniably a tall order; few institutions have managed to do it consistently. This book explores the approaches of those who apparently have gone far beyond any conventional notions of managing solely to meet ambitious financial objectives. It looks at how such institutions tap into worker fulfillment to develop the extra quotient of emotional commitment that deeply energizes many people to perform well beyond conventional norms".
In this context, Jon R. Katzenbach introduces five paths (balanced paths) that explain all the higher-performing workforce situations. As argued by Katzenbach, "each path constitutes a clearly different approach for energizing a workforce for higher performance. Certainly, there are overlaps and similarities among the paths, but the primary focus and value proposition of each is quite distinct". Hence, throughout this invaluable study, he explores these five paths as the overarching concept or framework for this book. And he defines (1) top management philosophy, and (2) characteristics of the five balanced paths as follows:
I- Mission, Values, and Pride:
(1). Employees will feel truly proud of what this enterprise stands for, what their specific work group can accomplish, and what they can contribute, both collectively and individually; their pride will be continually reinforced with external and internal recognition.
(2). a. Noble purpose
b. Rich history
c. Strong values
d. Group cohesion
II- Process and Metrics:
(1). Employees who consistently meet and exceed their metrics and adhere to the critical process requirements will be recognized and respected by their peers and conspicuously recognized and rewarded by management.
(2). a. Clear measures and standards
b. Focused processes
c. Performance transparency
d. Collaborative and collective effort
III- Entrepreneurial Spirit:
(1). Employees will be rewarded directly in proportion to what they create and the personal risk they incur; those rewards have virtually unlimited upside financial and ownership potential.
(2). a. High earning opportunity
b. Strong ownership interests
c. Personel risk
IV- Individual Achievement:
(1). Employees will be recognized and rewarded directly in proportion to their personal accomplishments. They will be paid and advanced based on those contributions, and they will work alongside talented individuals in the field.
(2). a. Lots of opportunity
b. Individuals given freedom to act
c. Focus on individual performance
d. Performance-based advancement
e. Healty competitiveness
V- Recognition and Celebration:
(1). Employees will be recognized, rewarded, and celebrated in dozens of ways-by supervisors and colleagues as well as top management-for their collective and individual contributions. As a result, they will work in an environment alive with enthusiasm, excitement, and fun and wherein formal compensation is of secondary importance.
(2). a. Widespread recognition/reward
b. Lots of specific events
c. Visible high energy
d. Social interaction and fun
Strongly recommended.Peak Performance: Aligning the Hearts and Minds of Your Employees OverviewThis book outperforms the competition with employees' positive emotional energy. It takes a fired-up workforce to deliver consistently higher levels of performance than its competition. What fuels the fire? Emotional commitment to company success, says Jon Katzenbach. Drawing on an in-depth study of twenty-five enterprises - including Marriott International, The Home Depot, Hewlett-Packard, Southwest Airlines, and the U.S. Marine Corps - the author found distinct patterns in how companies engage their employees to capitalize on emotional energy. At the heart of "Peak Performance" lies Katzenbach's identification of five balanced motivational paths: the Mission, Values, and Pride Path, the Process and Metrics Path, the Entrepreneurial Spirit Path, the Individual Achievement Path, and the Recognition and Celebration Path. He contends that these paths create a framework of options for managers about where and how to generate emotional energy and how to channel that energy to achieve higher performance. Essential to each path is leadership's commitment to strike a balance between enterprise performance and worker fulfillment.Through its detailed case studies, "Peak Performance" highlights the various sources of emotional energy unique to each organization and the discipline companies need to follow their chosen paths. The book concludes with guidelines for managers seeking to reshape their practices to achieve better performance from their own workforces and gain the resulting competitive edge.

You Already Know How to Be Great: A Simple Way to Remove Interference and Unlock Your Greatest Potential ReviewThe book is not about gaining new knowledge it's about helping you use the knowledge you already have. Fine discusses the principles of "Inside Out".
Inside Out
This is where you eliminate the interference that's getting in the way of using the knowledge you already have. In companies, managers (especially micro-managers) tend to divert their employees' attention away from learning and creating and have them instead focus on remembering and complying. Fine uses examples of how, when he was coaching, he saw people too focused on what they were supposed to be doing (the "right way") instead of focusing on what was actually happening. He makes the point that you learn mostly from processing real-time experiences, especially when you are unencumbered by interference. Sometimes interference comes from trying to remember how to do everything right - instead of just doing it!
The Three Performance Gaps
He identifies these performance gaps and gives remedies for them.
Awareness gap - what they thought they were doing versus what they were actual doing;
Pressure gap - choking under pressure. The difference between practicing versus the real performance;
Expertise gap - you don't have to be better than the person you're training.
Necessary for Top Performance
Here are the things Fine says you must have:
Faith: believe you can do it
Fire: have the passion
Focus: have a concentrated effort
He explains how to get rid of interferences caused by fears in the workplace, such as - getting fired, being criticized in front of others, getting stuck in a dead-end job and not getting recognition.
Fine introduces the principle of creating focus throw "GROW"
Goal - what you want to do;
Reality - where you are/what the situation is;
Options - the different ways to get there;
Way forward - the action to take.
He gives many practical examples of how to apply "GROW" to things like
fear of public speaking and decision making. GROW makes it easy to increase "decision velocity" and improve performance.
The book explains how to effectively coach using the inside-out methods. For example, having no judgments and focusing on what's actually happening instead of what you feel should be happening.
Then he applies inside-out to teams and organizations. He uses the example of Lou Gerstner coming into IBM and not changing the knowledge of the company but changing the focus. He discusses what a high performance culture is and how to apply GROW to teams.
The last part is about implementation. The book has great stories on how other people have increased their performance by putting GROW into practice. Through these stories you learn how to use faith, fire and focus to increase your performance.
The book is well written and delivered in a very practical and easy to understand way. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to increase their performance or the performance of who they manage.
Another recommendation is "GOAL! Your 30 Day Game Plan for Business & Career Success." This is perhaps the best kept secret in attaining a goal.
Goal!: Your 30-Day Game Plan for Business and Career SuccessYou Already Know How to Be Great: A Simple Way to Remove Interference and Unlock Your Greatest Potential OverviewA bold new approach to performance by one of the top coaches in the country. In trying to improve-on the playing field, in the office, or even at home-most people seek out new information to get to the next level. They read a book, attend a class, or hire an expert to give them an edge. But Alan Fine, an accomplished tennis, golf, and executive coach and a renowned authority on peak performance, believes that this "outside-in" method is precisely what's holding you back from doing your best work. He's found the biggest obstacle to improved performance isn't not knowing what to do; it's not doing what you already know. Ironically, the quest for information and instructions designed to help you get ahead can often interfere with your ability to focus on doing something. Fine reveals his simple and proven approach to achieving breakthrough performance. It starts with reducing the interference that blocks your potential through an amazing process called G.R.O.W. (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward). No matter who you are or what you do, You Already Know How to Be Great will help you eliminate what is standing in the way of your goals.

Public Speaking Today, Student Edition ReviewThe reason why I like this text so much better than other speaking texts is that the assignments in it are practical. This pragmatic approach teaches students about all elements of speech preparation and delivery, from research to structure to what they will feel like when they're up there giving the speech. There are how-to sections on most types of competitive speeches, such as oratory, lincoln-douglas debate and extemporaneous speaking, which is great for teachers like me who also double as speech coaches for competitive teams. I've never found a useful speech text for high school students until I found this one.Public Speaking Today, Student Edition Overview
Public Speaking Today will teach your students the public speaking skills that are used by presidents, generals, business leaders, and celebrities. This text is organized into a step-by-step approach beginning with "What is Public Speaking," then moves through the speech building process. A special chapter dealing with debate is also included.

Now, Discover Your Strengths ReviewTrying to overcome your weaknesses is a waste of time, according to Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D., of the Gallup Organization, and authors of the book NOW, DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS (Free Press, 2001).
"Casting a critical eye on our weaknesses . . . will only help us prevent failure. It will not help us reach excellence," they write in their thought-provoking book, the follow-up to the outstanding and best-selling Gallup work, FIRST, BREAK ALL THE RULES (Simon & Schuster, 1999).
Most organizations fail to achieve excellence, the authors contend, because they also fall into the "overcome your weaknesses" trap. Companies do a poor job of tapping the potential already present on their payroll because they try to make employees into something they're not-at the expense of exploiting individuals' innate talents.
Furthermore, Gallup researchers conclude that most of the energy, time, and money that organizations place on trying to hire, train, and develop well-rounded employees is wasted. "When we studied them, excellent performers were rarely well-rounded. On the contrary, they were sharp," the authors quip.
Internet Connection. To actually discover your strengths, you cannot rely on the book's pages. You must go online to complete an innovative web-based assessment that identifies your top five individual talent-strengths (and provides you with a brief custom report that you can print or email to someone, like your spouse or boss).
Oddly, if you like the assessment, you cannot purchase additional assessments for your staff, spouse, kids, or anyone else. For them to access the assessment, they must each buy another book.
Other Weaknesses. The book encourages managers to review and become familiar with their direct reports' strength analyses (so as to manage to each individual uniquely). But the authors provide neither a mechanism nor a process to do this.
You are told to consult the book for suggestions on managing your employees who each embody unique mixes of some 34 different strengths. Dauntingly, the authors tell us there are "over thirty-three million possible combinations of the top five strengths." A well-intending manager apparently has a lot of customizing to do. The book provides scant help for that.
Putting the Strengths concept to work more broadly in the organization is even more complex and overwhelming. Selecting and promoting people, as suggested in the book's "Practical Guide," requires profiling at least 100 employees who are all working in the same job (50 top achievers and 50 clunkers). Then you build a database of statistically significant trait patterns. Then you buy every candidate a book, give them a web connection... Then you try to do pattern matching...
The so-called Practical Guide quickly appears all but practical to all but the largest operations.
Target: HR Folk. The authors also take a swing at their firm's consulting customers-HR departments. They assail broad competency training efforts and write: "Many human resources departments have an inferiority complex. With the best of intentions they do everything they can to highlight the importance of people, but when sitting around the boardroom table, they suspect that they don't get the same respect as finance, marketing, or operations. In many instances they are right, but, unfortunately, in many instances they don't deserve to. Why? Because they don't have any data."
Unfortunately, this book does NOT provide them with meaningful solutions for closing that gap (other than, presumably, hiring Gallup consultants for large scale projects).
My Motivation. Gallup's StrengthFinder report tells me that my top personal strengths include the Maximizer tendency-which compels me to "transform something strong into something superb." And the Command strength--characterized as feeling "compelled to present the facts or the truth, no matter how unpleasant it may be."
The truth is this: One can't help but think that the well-constructed concept advanced in this enlightening and occasionally entertaining book might have gone from strong to superb. But instead, it seems to have been rushed to market to quickly capitalize on the success of FIRST, BREAK ALL THE RULES. And that's too bad. Because this worthwhile book, as is true of many of the people it intends to help, has considerable strengths undermined by what are otherwise correctable weaknesses. Now, Discover Your Strengths Overview

Executive Presence: The Art of Commanding Respect Like a CEO ReviewAbsolutely love this book! Not only is Harrison's thinking down to earth and practical but easy to understand and implement immediately. It has been a huge relief to learn that someone of his clout and experience believes and teaches you can reach the C-suite by leveraging what you already have, yourself - just managed. Harrison reminds me that we all have `that special thing' if we could just hone our executive presence and plan for the career changing moments. Just over the past four months, I've used his knowledge on several occasions in my career and I continuously find myself in planning meetings and leading initiatives where I am the only person in the room that is not a VP or Executive. Why? Because I have been able to establish report, reputation and an executive presence that allows the executives to give me reign and freedom to show them the goods to back it all up. As Harrison points out, commanding respect like a CEO requires reading others, influencing perceptions, persuading naysayers, creating a personal brand, managing reputation and controlling any possible damage to the previous. It's quite easy to lay out a strategy with his experience and research as a guide. In fact I've used several of the personal points within this book to ignite the company to go about the same transformation.Executive Presence: The Art of Commanding Respect Like a CEO Overview

About the Book

An expert in coaching high-level players inthe art of perception management, HarrisonMonarth reveals the critical difference betweenCEOs and those of us who wish to beCEOs. It's not a matter of intelligence, connections,or luck. It can be summed up in twowords: executive presence.

While most of us toil in obscurity and expectgreat things to follow, those on the path tocorporate leadership spend their time perfectingthe types of leadership communicationskills that generate respect and get others toshare their vision. They use these skills toestablish how they are perceived by others andto manage their reputation throughout theorganization. In other words, these soon-tobetop players have developed the presenceof an executive through careful imagemanagement—and they make sure they havethe goods to back it up.

In Executive Presence, Monarth shows how youcan seize control of your own career using thesame skills. Inside, he explains how to:
Accurately "read" people andpredict their behavior
Influence the perceptions of others
Persuade those of opposing viewsto your side
Create and maintain a personal"brand"
Manage and control your onlinereputation
Perform damage control whenthings go wrong

Monarth's conclusions aren't based solely onhis keen insight and extensive experience;they're the result of the latest scientifi c researchin interpersonal communication andhuman behavior.

Talent and skills are important, but they alonewon't take you to the top of your organization.People reach highly infl uential positionsbecause they deeply understand the powerof perception and know how to leverageit in their favor. The good news is, anyonewith the will to succeed can do it. ExecutivePresence provides all the techniques you needto take your career to the highest level ofany organization.
