You Already Know How to Be Great: A Simple Way to Remove Interference and Unlock Your Greatest Potential ReviewThe book is not about gaining new knowledge it's about helping you use the knowledge you already have. Fine discusses the principles of "Inside Out".Inside Out
This is where you eliminate the interference that's getting in the way of using the knowledge you already have. In companies, managers (especially micro-managers) tend to divert their employees' attention away from learning and creating and have them instead focus on remembering and complying. Fine uses examples of how, when he was coaching, he saw people too focused on what they were supposed to be doing (the "right way") instead of focusing on what was actually happening. He makes the point that you learn mostly from processing real-time experiences, especially when you are unencumbered by interference. Sometimes interference comes from trying to remember how to do everything right - instead of just doing it!
The Three Performance Gaps
He identifies these performance gaps and gives remedies for them.
Awareness gap - what they thought they were doing versus what they were actual doing;
Pressure gap - choking under pressure. The difference between practicing versus the real performance;
Expertise gap - you don't have to be better than the person you're training.
Necessary for Top Performance
Here are the things Fine says you must have:
Faith: believe you can do it
Fire: have the passion
Focus: have a concentrated effort
He explains how to get rid of interferences caused by fears in the workplace, such as - getting fired, being criticized in front of others, getting stuck in a dead-end job and not getting recognition.
Fine introduces the principle of creating focus throw "GROW"
Goal - what you want to do;
Reality - where you are/what the situation is;
Options - the different ways to get there;
Way forward - the action to take.
He gives many practical examples of how to apply "GROW" to things like
fear of public speaking and decision making. GROW makes it easy to increase "decision velocity" and improve performance.
The book explains how to effectively coach using the inside-out methods. For example, having no judgments and focusing on what's actually happening instead of what you feel should be happening.
Then he applies inside-out to teams and organizations. He uses the example of Lou Gerstner coming into IBM and not changing the knowledge of the company but changing the focus. He discusses what a high performance culture is and how to apply GROW to teams.
The last part is about implementation. The book has great stories on how other people have increased their performance by putting GROW into practice. Through these stories you learn how to use faith, fire and focus to increase your performance.
The book is well written and delivered in a very practical and easy to understand way. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to increase their performance or the performance of who they manage.
Another recommendation is "GOAL! Your 30 Day Game Plan for Business & Career Success." This is perhaps the best kept secret in attaining a goal.
Goal!: Your 30-Day Game Plan for Business and Career SuccessYou Already Know How to Be Great: A Simple Way to Remove Interference and Unlock Your Greatest Potential OverviewA bold new approach to performance by one of the top coaches in the country. In trying to improve-on the playing field, in the office, or even at home-most people seek out new information to get to the next level. They read a book, attend a class, or hire an expert to give them an edge. But Alan Fine, an accomplished tennis, golf, and executive coach and a renowned authority on peak performance, believes that this "outside-in" method is precisely what's holding you back from doing your best work. He's found the biggest obstacle to improved performance isn't not knowing what to do; it's not doing what you already know. Ironically, the quest for information and instructions designed to help you get ahead can often interfere with your ability to focus on doing something. Fine reveals his simple and proven approach to achieving breakthrough performance. It starts with reducing the interference that blocks your potential through an amazing process called G.R.O.W. (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward). No matter who you are or what you do, You Already Know How to Be Great will help you eliminate what is standing in the way of your goals.
