Mathematics Unlimited - 2001 and Beyond ReviewMaybe you like the idea of this book but you are wondering, does it live up to the promise, will you actually read much of it, is it just too big? The answers are yes, probably yes, and no.I've browsed maybe half of the chapters. Each one is clear, easy to skim through, with a lot to dig into if you want. So far I've found not one "book report" just summarizing recent work. I've found fascinating helpful interpretations of subjects I don't know -- and challenging positions on subjects that I have my own view of.
Of course you can find fault. The book leans more to applied math than I'd like. And what about functional analysis?
Overall, I am stunned to think I wavered on buying this. I almost passed it up. It would have been a big mistake.Mathematics Unlimited - 2001 and Beyond OverviewThis is a book guaranteed to delight the reader. It not only depicts the state of mathematics at the end of the century, but is also full of remarkable insights into its future de- velopment as we enter a new millennium. True to its title, the book extends beyond the spectrum of mathematics to in- clude contributions from other related sciences. You will enjoy reading the many stimulating contributions and gain insights into the astounding progress of mathematics and the perspectives for its future. One of the editors, Bj"rn Eng- quist, is a world-renowned researcher in computational sci- ence and engineering. The second editor, Wilfried Schmid, is a distinguished mathematician at Harvard University. Likewi- se the authors are all foremost mathematicians and scien- tists, and their biographies and photographs appear at the end of the book. Unique in both form and content, this is a "must-read" for every mathematician and scientist and, in particular, for graduates still choosing their specialty.
