A New Sound in Hebrew Poetry: Poetics, Politics, Accent (Jewish Literature and Culture) ReviewGet this book if you seek to understand the revival of the Hebrew language in Palestine and the Land of Israel. It provides a sound understanding of the "how and when" with regards to the formation of the new-accent hebrew. The first two chapters - my favourites - are especially strong where the author describes the politics of its creation (zionism, local power conflicts, opposing approaches made by pedagogues, etc). Although I was more interested in this part of the book, ie the history, I was surprised by how interesting the second part - the poetry part - was for a lay person like me. Probably this is because the chapter about the women (some of whom wrote in the new accent some of whom wrote in Ashkenazic) not only was about poetry but also about how these women were used as symbols for the nation.A New Sound in Hebrew Poetry: Poetics, Politics, Accent (Jewish Literature and Culture) OverviewWith scrupulous attention to landmark poetic texts and to educational andcritical discourse in early 20th-century Palestine, Miryam Segal traces theemergence of a new accent to replace the Ashkenazic or European Hebrew accent inwhich almost all modern Hebrew poetry had been composed until the 1920s. Segal takesinto account the broad historical, ideological, and political context of this shift, including the construction of a national language, culture, and literary canon; thecrucial role of schools; the influence of Zionism; and the leading role played bywomen poets in introducing the new accent. This meticulous and sophisticated yetreadable study provides surprising new insights into the emergence of modern Hebrewpoetry and the revival of the Hebrew language in the Land of Israel.Want to learn more information about A New Sound in Hebrew Poetry: Poetics, Politics, Accent (Jewish Literature and Culture)?
