.NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewMy roommate loaned me this book because I was trying do do some UI automation where I work. This book had just what I needed and I had my automation running in 1 day when I was trying to get it to work for nearly a month before the book. If you want to know how to write reflection UI automation this book will help you a lot..NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) OverviewThis book presents practical techniques for writing lightweight software test automation in a .NET environment. If you develop, test, or manage .NET software, you should find this book very useful. Before .NET, writing test automation was often as difficult as writing the code for the application under test itself. With .NET, it is possible to write lightweight, custom test automation (small, dedicated test harness programs which are two pages of source code or less in length and take less than two hours to write) in a tiny fraction of the time it used to take. The emphasis of this book is on practical techniques that you can use immediately. This book is intended for software developers, testers, and managers who work with .NET technology who have a basic familiarity with .NET programming but does not make any particular assumptions about your skill level. The examples in this book have been successfully used in seminars and teaching environments where it has proven highly effective as a platform for students who are learning intermediate level .NET programming.

Software Testing as a Service ReviewI am a newbie when it comes to software testing. Even though this book has good concepts in software testing but I found that you need to refer some additional books on software testing to makeup for the topics not covered in this book. Still it is a good read.Software Testing as a Service OverviewIn today's unforgiving business environment where customers demand zero defect software at lower costs-it is testing that provides the opportunity for software companies to separate themselves from the competition. Providing a fresh perspective on this increasingly important function, Software Testing as a Service explains, in simple language, how to use software testing to improve productivity, reduce time to market, and reduce costly errors. The book explains how the normal functions of manufacturing can be applied to commoditize the software testing service to achieve consistent quality across all software projects. This up-to-date reference reviews different software testing tools, techniques, and practices and provides succinct guidance on how to estimate costs, allocate resources, and make competitive bids. Replete with examples and case histories, this book shows software development managers, software testers, testing managers, and entrepreneurs how proper planning can lead to the creation of software that proves itself to be head and shoulders above the competition.

Software Fault Injection with CDROM ReviewVoas and McGraw make the case that, to produce reliable software, validation (usually applied as dynamic - or run-time -- testing), is more effective than process. That alone is nothing new -- many software development organizations invest much more in testing than in process improvement. But Software Fault Injection goes further: instead of more and more testing which always seems to miss the failures that the end user seems to find so easily, create those failures. Even (temporarily) create the defects that will cause those failures to happen. Sound strange? It is, but no stranger than what this book explains how to do -- as in the subtitle -- Inoculating Programs Against Errors. The idea is to produce modified, selectively defective copies of the software under test and see how the rest of the system handles the failures that now happen "in the lab" rather than in the field. It works with medical research and produces vaccines. If you're tired of the cycle of code, test, launch, surprise crash in the field, consider whether software failure injection might help.
--
Full disclosure: I only had time to read the first 10% of the book before I had to move on to other topics. But if and when I come back to software reliability improvement, this is a book I'll pick up again.Software Fault Injection with CDROM OverviewThe benefits and challenges associated with fault injection methods are described in this book. The authors seek to explain injection methodology by extensive use of applications data and real-world case studies. The book covers: how to predict where faults are most likely to hide; how failures in the software environment should impact software performance; how to use normal beta testing to uncover potential security problems; what fault injection reveals about maintenance and reuse; and how to introduce fault injection methods into your organization.

Manage Software Testing ReviewI have read many testing books and this book surely has lots of material which is not covered elsewhere. However, the book frustrates you when you try out the examples or try to figure out what to do and what to leave out (theoretical). Those trying to learn things not offered in regular books can find this insightful.
Be warned that many ideas are not practically implementable - for example 18.10.6 - Bug seeding model where we deliberately insert bugs in code to estimate the # of defects. This is NEVER done in real life (my experience) since we have difficult time doing the actual project and eliminating the real bugs. The author does not warn you of this. There are many other cases where the author should warn you if its theoretical or practical some examples -
(1) Section 18.2.1 (Revised) Propagation Analysis Algorithm - Not possible in real software development with deadlines.
(2) 18.2.5 Revised Execution Analysis Algorithm
The author should have given the data and XLS in his blog (very difficult to locate) so that the readers can use the information. I vainly tried the example in 18.3.1 How to Calculate Influences on Performance and was so frustrated thathe changed the columns between figure 18.2 and 18.3 and gives so much data in 6th decimal (making it useless for the readers when we are not able to follow).
On the positive side - there are a lot of insight in terms of reliability covered here. The references are very good and useful. It should have more stars if the XLS were provided or examples made more understandable.Manage Software Testing OverviewWhether you are inheriting a test team or starting one up, Manage Software Testing is a must-have resource that covers all aspects of test management. It guides you through the business and organizational issues that you are confronted with on a daily basis, explaining what you need to focus on strategically, tactically, and operationally. Using a risk-based approach, the author addresses a range of questions about software product development. The book covers unit, system, and non-functional tests and includes examples on how to estimate the number of bugs expected to be found, the time required for testing, and the date when a release is ready. It weighs the cost of finding bugs against the risks of missing release dates or letting bugs appear in the final released product. It is imperative to determine if bugs do exist and then be able to metric how quickly they can be identified, the cost they incur, and how many remain in the product when it is released. With this book, test managers can effectively and accurately establish these parameters.

The Art of Software Testing, Second Edition ReviewIt's hard to give the appropriate number of stars to this edition. On the one hand, this is one of the classics of the field, and deservedly so. In it's first edition, this may have been the first great book on testing, and there is something about the "first great book" on any topic that makes it a lasting value decades later: DeMarco on Structured Analysis, Brooks on the wicked complexity of software project management, Booch on object-oriented design, K&R on C. And so I think it goes with The Art of Software Testing. It's a short book, and full of good ideas that will stay with you.
But.
This revised edition is simply a terrible value. At the full list price, you'd be paying something like fifty cents a page...and, let me tell you, a book had better revolutionize my life for that kind of money. I'm a dedicated capitalist sell-out software developer, but this kind of pricing arouses even _my_ hacker sensibilities. Also, the value of the revision is questionable: there may be a chapter on Extreme Programming, but it seems to me that the best material in this book is still the classic text that survives from the 1st ed. So, my recommendation is that you simply _buy_ the first edition, new or used, at a fraction of the price. Then, you get nearly all of the benefit, plus the cachet of having the "classic" on your shelf. You can put it right next to "The C Programming Language" and "The Mythical Man-Month." Then, your visitors will know you're a serious software developer...and, you know what? They'll probably be right.
I also like and recommend Kaner, Falk and Nguyen, "Testing Computer Software," for a more in-depth and up-to-date treatment of testing issues. The Art of Software Testing, Second Edition OverviewThis long-awaited revision of a bestseller provides a practical discussion of the nature and aims of software testing. You'll find the latest methodologies for the design of effective test cases, including information on psychological and economic principles, managerial aspects, test tools, high-order testing, code inspections, and debugging. Accessible, comprehensive, and always practical, this edition provides the key information you need to test successfully, whether a novice or a working programmer. Buy your copy today and end up with fewer bugs tomorrow.

Testing and Quality Assurance for Component-Based Software (Artech House Computing Library) ReviewThis book provides a thorough and detailed discussion of the key differences between testing and QA for 'monolithic' or integrated software, and component-based software engineering.
The distinction is important because while the reason to go with a component-based approach is reusability and leveraging developer efforts across a number of applications or products can also introduce widespread problems across a range of systems. This book shows how to approach testing and QA in a manner that eliminates this problem. The approach itself includes validation methods that need to be rigorously applied, and a detailed quality assurance approach that includes testing, certification and verification after the validation layer is completed.
In addition to a coherent approach, the authors discuss specific methods, automated testing tools, testing frameworks, and specifics about test cycles that apply to component-based software. Overall, this book provides a complete picture of the differences between conventional and component-based software, challenges and solutions to meet those challenges.
While the value of this book will be readily apparent to anyone who is working in a component-based software engineering environment, it is also invaluable to the growing number of project teams and shops developing and implementing web services. There is much commonality shared between component-based software and web services, and the principles and approach given in this book will apply equally to both.Testing and Quality Assurance for Component-Based Software (Artech House Computing Library) OverviewPresenting the state of the art in component-based software testing, this cutting-edge resource offers you an in-depth understanding of the current issues, challenges, needs and solutions in this critical area. The book discusses the very latest advances in component-based testing and quality assurance in an accessible tutorial format, making the material easy to comprehend and benefit from no matter what your professional level. The book clearly explains what component-based software testing is, why it is important, and how it differs from traditional software testing. From an introduction to software components, testing component-based software and validation methods for software components, to performance testing and measurement, standards and certification and verification of quality for component-based systems, you get a revealing snapshot of the key developments in this area, including important research findings. This volume also serves as a textbook for related courses at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level.

Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice ReviewThis book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:
Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.
Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.
Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.
How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice OverviewA superior primer on software testing and quality assurance, from integration to execution and automation
This important new work fills the pressing need for a user-friendly text that aims to provide software engineers, software quality professionals, software developers, and students with the fundamental developments in testing theory and common testing practices.
Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice equips readers with a solid understanding of:
Practices that support the production of quality software
Software testing techniques
Life-cycle models for requirements, defects, test cases, and test results
Process models for units, integration, system, and acceptance testing
How to build test teams, including recruiting and retaining test engineers
Quality Models, Capability Maturity Model, Testing Maturity Model, and Test Process Improvement Model

Expertly balancing theory with practice, and complemented with an abundance of pedagogical tools, including test questions, examples, teaching suggestions, and chapter summaries, this book is a valuable, self-contained tool for professionals and an ideal introductory text for courses in software testing, quality assurance, and software engineering.

Software Quality Engineering: Testing, Quality Assurance, and Quantifiable Improvement ReviewI made the mistake of assigning this book for CSE 5321 Software Testing (a graduate course) at the University of Texas at Arlington during the fall of 2008. I abandoned it 2/3 of the way into the semester. I replaced it with "Introduction to Software Testing" by Ammann & Offutt.
The title of my review pretty much says it all.Software Quality Engineering: Testing, Quality Assurance, and Quantifiable Improvement OverviewThe one resource needed to create reliable softwareThis text offers a comprehensive and integrated approach to software quality engineering. By following the author's clear guidance, readers learn how to master the techniques to produce high-quality, reliable software, regardless of the software system's level of complexity. The first part of the publication introduces major topics in software quality engineering and presents quality planning as an integral part of the process. Providing readers with a solid foundation in key concepts and practices, the book moves on to offer in-depth coverage of software testing as a primary means to ensure software quality; alternatives for quality assurance, including defect prevention, process improvement, inspection, formal verification, fault tolerance, safety assurance, and damage control; and measurement and analysis to close the feedback loop for quality assessment and quantifiable improvement. The text's approach and style evolved from the author's hands-on experience in the classroom. All the pedagogical tools needed to facilitate quick learning are provided:* Figures and tables that clarify concepts and provide quick topic summaries* Examples that illustrate how theory is applied in real-world situations* Comprehensive bibliography that leads to in-depth discussion of specialized topics* Problem sets at the end of each chapter that test readers' knowledgeThis is a superior textbook for software engineering, computer science, information systems, and electrical engineering students, and a dependable reference for software and computer professionals and engineers.

Introduction to Software Testing ReviewThis is a very good book. It gives good no-nonsense but nicely readable technical grounding to software testing. Highly recommended as textbook for courses in testing.Introduction to Software Testing OverviewExtensively class tested, this text takes an innovative approach to explaining the process of software testing: it defines testing as the process of applying a few well-defined, general-purpose test criteria to a structure or model of the software. The structure of the text directly reflects the pedagogical approach and incorporates the latest innovations in testing, including techniques to test modern types of software such as OO, web applications, and embedded software.

Testing Object-Oriented Systems: Models, Patterns, and Tools ReviewA book like this is intimidating. At close to 1000 pages it is no lightweight reading matter. However this book is an engineer's approach to the concept of testing object systems and it should be a standard reference for OO developers.

Object-oriented languages, while recognised as a clear forward step in programming technology, introduce new ways for defects to be introduced. Inheritance and polymorphism both are powerful concepts, but also carry the potential for insidious defects. This book introduces fundamental techniques to analyse the class design and derive appropriate tests for its behaviour.
I regard Bob's book as a must for developers. However I wonder if they will read it. This is not a criticism on this book, quite the contrary. My concern is related to the insight that most programmers see unit testing as an afterthought and not as a major component of their work. Often unit testing is seen as difficult, because of the complexities of class behaviour. And it is so easy to pass this burden on to system testing.

My message for developers is, make the attempt to read it! It actually makes it easier to design and implement unit testing. It also pays off. You will have less requests for bugfixes coming back from testing.

It has been long my contention that it is in the interest of the testing community to get out of its own trenches and start working closely with developers, making it easy for them to implement effective unit testing. This book is a good start in this direction.Testing Object-Oriented Systems: Models, Patterns, and Tools OverviewMore than ever, mission-critical and business-critical applications depend on object-oriented (OO) software. Testing techniques tailored to the unique challenges of OO technology are necessary to achieve high reliability and quality. Testing Object-Oriented Systems: Models, Patterns, and Tools is an authoritative guide to designing and automating test suites for OO applications. This comprehensive book explains why testing must be model-based and provides in-depth coverage of techniques to develop testable models from state machines, combinational logic, and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). It introduces the test design pattern and presents 37 patterns that explain how to design responsibility-based test suites, how to tailor integration and regression testing for OO code, how to test reusable components and frameworks, and how to develop highly effective test suites from use cases. Effective testing must be automated and must leverage object technology. The author describes how to design and code specification-based assertions to offset testability losses due to inheritance and polymorphism.Fifteen micro-patterns present oracle strategies--practical solutions for one of the hardest problems in test design. Seventeen design patterns explain how to automate your test suites with a coherent OO test harness framework. The author provides thorough coverage of testing issues such as:*The bug hazards of OO programming and differences from testing procedural code *How to design responsibility-based tests for classes, clusters, and subsystems using class invariants, interface data flow models, hierarchic state machines, class associations, and scenario analysis *How to support reuse by effective testing of abstract classes, generic classes, components, and frameworks *How to choose an integration strategy that supports iterative and incremental development *How to achieve comprehensive system testing with testable use cases *How to choose a regression test approach *How to develop expected test results and evaluate the post-test state of an object *How to automate testing with assertions, OO test drivers, stubs, and test frameworksReal-world experience, world-class best practices, and the latest research in object-oriented testing are included.Practical examples illustrate test design and test automation for Ada 95, C++, Eiffel, Java, Objective-C, and Smalltalk. The UML is used throughout, but the test design patterns apply to systems developed with any OO language or methodology. 0201809389B04062001

Mastering Software Quality Assurance: Best Practices, Tools and Techniques for Software Developers ReviewI just finished reading a new book by Murali Chenmuturi; "Mastering Software Quality Assurance", subtitled "Best Practices, Tools and Techniques for Software Developers". My first reaction is that the audience of the book should be enlarged from Software Developers to `their managers, team leads and anyone else involved in software development'.
I found the book to be a comprehensive look at quality assurance, its history and evolution from quality control to quality assurance and applicability to software development. There are discussions on quality in specifications, design, construction and conformance (which the author describes as `how well an organization conducts the activities that ensure that quality is built into a deliverable'). Other perspectives of quality covered in the book are; the organizational environment needed to foster quality, verification, validation, product quality and process quality. In addition to the discussions there are a number of process flows as well as checklists, templates and guidelines, some within the chapters and others as appendices. The presence of these items makes the book a nice combination of theory and practical help.
Murali Chemuturi also has a couple of interesting proposals, one a composite metric to measure the quality of a software product, that takes into consideration both organizational aspects as well as actual activities on the project. The other is `a new paradigm for software quality assurance' based on the author's disillusion with ISO certifications and CMMI ratings. While there is some truth in the criticism voiced, the proposed new paradigm would have its own set of issues and potential for misuse. Still it is always good to be aware of the negative aspects of current practices.
The author definitions of some types of testing, e.g. System testing, Regression testing, Retesting surprised me, but given that there is as yet no globally accepted definitions of many software concepts, the fact that I only reacted to three of the over 20 different types of testing is probably a good sign.
In conclusion I definitely recommend this book to anyone working with, or interested in software quality - with a caveat, do not implement anything exactly as in the book, rather use the material as a starting point and customize it to your own culture and needs.
