The Linguistics Student's Handbook ReviewLaurie Bauer's THE LINGUISTICS STUDENT'S HANDBOOK is a compendium of information for those entering this academic pursuit that traditional textbooks don't explain so clearly. When I entered linguistics, I slowly learnt how to interpret the algebraic representation of sound change laws and syntax trees, how to write bibliographies, and glossing rules as I went along. Bauer presents all these little details in one handy book for the beginning undergraduate. Even I learned some new things here, such as the existence of Dania phonetic symbols and how some IPA symbols have been superseded.
The entire second half of the book is the "Language File", a listing of 280 languages that a student is likely to encounter in linguistics works. Now, this material can be useful in that each entry lists some of the noteworthy typological properties of the language, but I suspect that when many students encounter a language they're not familiar with, they'll be more comfortable just doing a Google search and winding up at Ethnologue or Wikipedia. Sadly, if it weren't for the Language File, than Bauer's work could have been a cheap pamphlet accessible to anyone. As it is, the book has been published at the full rate of a university press. I therefore can't really recommend it except to people who don't really worry about their budgets (and most undergraduates do fret about money). The Linguistics Student's Handbook OverviewThe book that tells you all the things you felt you were expected to know about linguistics, but were afraid to ask about. *What do you know about Burushaski and Miwok? *What's the difference between paradigmatic and syntagmatic? *What is E-language? *What is a language? *Do parenthetical and non-restrictive mean the same thing? *How do you write a bibiliographic entry for a work you have not seen? Every student who has asked these questions needs this book. A compendium of useful things for linguistics students to know, from the IPA chart to the Saussurean dichotomies, this book will be the constant companion of anyone undertaking studies of linguistics. Part reference work, part revision guide, and with tables providing summary information on some 280 languages, the book provides a new learning tool as a supplement to the usual textbooks and glossaries.

Supervision: A Redefinition ReviewSergiovanni and Starratt bring to light wonderful ideas for supervision during the next century. They force the reader to consider doing away with school and evaluations as we currently know them. They suggest moving away from evaluation and instead replacing it with healthy, supportive, and collegial supervision. These are all great ideas based upon what we have seen occur in many business settings.
The only problem I see with the authors' ideas is that one would have to basically recreate education as we currently know it in order to implement their vision of supervision. The change would have to be systemic all the way from the national level to the local levels. However, this may not be a bad thing.
The authors have very enlightening ideas contained in a very thought-provoking bookSupervision: A Redefinition OverviewFirst published in 1971 and now the best known book in the field, Supervision: A Redefinition continues to be the leading text for combining an in-depth view of theory and research for supervision with practical applications. The Seventh Edition continues a thirty-year tradition of breaking new ground by continuously redefining the field of supervision in response to changing school contexts, policies, and realities. The practical applications are supported by a conception of supervision as moral agency. The book continues to promote a new vision, or redefinition, of supervision from that of a top-down activity performed by higher-ups in the school hierarchy, to one in which supervision is a shared activity involving all stake-holders in the school including teachers, administrators, and parents. The book sees schools as communities rather than organizations, and emphasizes the student-teacher relationship rather than bureaucratic functions.

Advanced Debugging Methods (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) ReviewI'm disappointed because the book doesn't live up to it's description / summary. It's rare enough that you won't find it in a store to browse, though, so I'll tell you a bit about it.
We're basically looking at a Ph.D dissertation here. That is, the book has one single central "advanced debugging" idea that it explores and explains the author's implementation of. The summary made it sound like there'd be a bunch of wild ideas in here for advanced debugging tools, not just one!
The idea is to have a query language built into the debugger than the developer can use to assert invarients of some sort. So, in the query language, it could say that "all people have ages > 0 and Advanced Debugging Methods (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) OverviewObject relationships in modern software systems are becomingincreasingly numerous and complex, and program errors due toviolations of object relationships are difficult to detect.Programmers need new tools that allow them to explore objects in alarge system more efficiently and to detect broken objectrelationships instantaneously. Such tools incorporate approaches usedin such areas as data visualization, pattern matching and extraction, database querying, active databases, and rule-based programming. Thequery-based debugging approach developed by the author of this book isanother powerful yet efficient tool to be added to the developer'stool chest. Advanced Debugging Methods presents practice and tools fordebugging computer programs. This book proposes new powerfulapproaches that simplify the daunting task of debugging complexsoftware systems. Although debugging has been addressed in numerousresearch papers, many of its methods have yet to be explored in abook-length format. This book helps to fill this gap by presenting anoverview of existing debugging tools with motivating examples and casestudies, as well as presenting new, state-of-the-art debuggingmethods. Advanced Debugging Methods will be of use to software developerslooking for tools to be applied in cutting edge practice; systemarchitects looking at the relationship between software design anddebugging; tools and programming language researchers looking for newideas in run-time tool implementation as well as detailed descriptionsof advanced implementations; and university professors and graduatestudents who will use this book as supplementary reading for graduatecourses in programming tools, language implementation, and advancedobject-oriented systems. Advanced Debugging Methods is also ahandy reference of currently existing debugging methodologies as wellas a springboard for cutting-edge research to simplify the difficulttask of debugging and to facilitate the development of more robustsoftware systems.
