The Real Story of Informix Software and Phil White: Lessons in Business and Leadership for the Executive Team ReviewThis is an interesting, if sterile, dissection of the rise and fall of one-time Silicon Valley darling Informix and their charismatic CEO, Phil White. Author Steve Martin was an Informix employee in the critical years from 1991 through 1997, and therefore speaks with the authority and insider's knowledge not found in the perspective of an outside journalist, burdened by the baggage of an interviewee's selective recall. Martin couples with the history a series of business lessons, which, while not profound, provide a succinct primer of management basics that are broadly applicable. Not the least of these lessons is the danger in allowing personal rivalries to cloud sound business judgment. In the case of Informix, an irrational focus on beating Oracle and it's obnoxious CEO, Larry Ellison, could be traced to Informix's eventual demise. While Martin is admittedly a Phil White sympathizer, he is not an apologist, and does a good job of presenting the other side of the story that was so negatively twisted by a scandal-crazed press and a US Justice Department which, in the days of Enron and WorldCom, was chomping at the bit to get a major CEO in handcuffs doing the perp walk wearing stripes. Even the most cynical critic of Informix and White must concede that the offense that ultimately sunk the Informix ship was disproportional to the consequences delivered by Judge Breyer.This book will be most appreciated by those who have lived and worked in Silicon Valley during the days immediately preceding the Internet boom and subsequent bust, as well as those not intimidated by a fairly heavy dosage of product-related technical jargon. Having been a Silicon Valley CEO at the time with some familiarity with White and the team, I was hoping for more specifics in the disastrous Illustra acquisition - especially more of the personalities involved - but that in no way impacts a solid story that deserves to be chronicled. In summary, if you're looking for an orgy of Informix gossip and dirty laundry, this isn't it. But for a quick and insightful history of an important chapter in Silicon Valley, "The Real Story of Informix Software..." is worth the time.

Introduction to Information Retrieval ReviewI am a big fan of the authors 1999 book on Statistical Natural Language Processing, and I and was thrilled when I found this new book online -- just search for "Information Retrieval" on Google.
In these two books, they describe the theory behind a vast toolbox which can be used to construct new tools/products for the Internet. Now I can go back to them when the need arises.
For starters, I appreciate the detailed theoretical explanations of topics that I could not find in other texts, and the references to related work are especially helpful. One of the other books I read was Information Retrieval by Grossman, which is an older book but has a more condensed style compared to this. Grossman's discussion of clustering was more high level and referenced a few more papers that I found useful. That helped increase my interest to read through these chapters in which offer greater detail.
Before I felt like I could place each topic in its appropriate context, I had to spend six months of reading both the books, playing with code and finding s/w packages, searching the research literature, reading papers and other books, and then cycling back to the books. Here's are some suggestions for things I'd like to see:
1. A set of recomended programming tools: in some books on Perl -- such as the chapter "Natural Language Tools" in pages 149-171 in "Advanced Perl Programming" by Simon Cozens (O'Reilly) -- you get a very "quick & dirty" introduction to maybe 20-30% of the concepts in these two books along with ways to implement and play around with them. Although Perl has many natural language processing tools, the Cozens book cuts to the chase, explains which are the best tools, and shows you how to use them. I think knowing such shortcuts aids in learning how to apply and improve on them. The more complex and sophisticated topics, the more likely to make it out into the real world if they are easy to play with.
2. More data/examples on what does/doesn't work with end-users: Numbers, graphs, and charts are all good stuff. I always appreciate it when the authors referenced quantitative comparisons, real-world products, and history of Internet. One of the reasons I had to consult the research literature was to broaden my understanding of quantitative comparisons between different techniques involving end-users, which were typically done in the context of complete systems studies that users could try out.

I learned how to norm my boss and already asked for some great stuff! I love that. The Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes idea is great. She really breaks it down pretty well.
The BIG downside is she seems to have little respect for the readers time and finances. The first chapter says you need about 2 hours a day, for 7 days. I thought that was doable. But what I didn't expect was all the crazy suggestions: Buy a Nintendo, Go Skydiving, Sign up for Belly Dancing Lessons, Sign up for Salsa dancing, etc... Also if you were going to do this in 7 days and go to work, how would you get into any of the classes for find the time to go skydiving all within your "7 day makeover/"
She also mixes it up with home alone exercises and wome work out in public. I thought it would be more observation inside and out. But it requires: Staring at a painting at a museum for 30 Minutes for example... this takes at least an hour and I'm supposed to read and do 2-3 more exercises? Get a friend to come over and rollplay while you videotape, this one would take at least an hour... SO I find it's just not realisic or well thought out so I find that frusterating.

What you don't say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. As interesting as it is to learn to read others, it is also important to learn your own particular non verbal quirks: i.e.: Tonya's book teaches that although the reader may not be aware of it, people receive messages through body language (nonverbal signals) that can have a huge impact in a positive or negative way, just as the sound of your voice may make more of an impact (positively or negatively) than your actual words.
She teaches the reader to watch for body language signals may indicate truths that are not expressed in words. She also teaches the nuances and psychology of mirroring body language. The book clarifies the meanings of signals and nonverbal cues and shows the reader how to use this knowledge to his/her best advantage in every day situations, including the differences in male and female body language.
After reading this book, I found that watching political speeches more interesting, especially when the body language and spoken words do not match.
I would recommend this book to everyone.

Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing ReviewThis is the best book I've ever read on computational linguistics. It should be ideal for both linguists who want to learn about statistical language processing and those building language applications who want to learn about linguistics. This book isn't even published and it's now my most highly used reference book, joining gems such as Cormen, Leiserson and Rivest's algorithm book, Quirk et al.'s English Grammar, and Andrew Gelman's Bayesian statistics book (three excellent companions to this book, by the way).
The book is written more like a computer science or math book in that it starts absolutely from scratch, but moves quickly and assumes a sophisticated reader. The first one hundred or so pages provide background in probability, information theory and linguistics.
This book covers (almost) every current trend in NLP from a statistical perspective: syntactic tagging, sense disambiguation, parsing, information retrieval, lexical subcategorization, Hidden Markov Models, and probabilistic context-free grammars. It also covers machine translation and information retrieval in later chapters.
It covers all the statistical techniques used in NLP from Bayes' law through to maximum entropy modeling, clustering: nearest neighbors and decision trees, and much more.
What you won't find is information on applications to higher-level discourse and dialogue phenomena like pronoun resolution or speech act classification.Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing OverviewStatistical approaches to processing natural language text have becomedominant in recent years.
