The Meaning of "Relationship" in Interpersonal Communication ReviewThis book is an anthology that is edited by Richard L. Conville and L. Edna, and is comprised of chapters by eight separate authors. Each author discusses and analyzes how relationships are affected by interpersonal communication, and vice versa. The aim of the compilation of this book is to eliminate some of the ambiguities of the term "relationship" by developing its conceptualization. Through the use of multiple perspectives on the examination of relationships, the reader gains a clarification and expansion on this frequently used but rarely defined term. The reading of this book certainly does exemplify all of the nuances of relationships. Personally, I gained an appreciation for how interpersonal communication shapes and influences the course of any relationship. I found many of the topics in this book fascinating, when I could comprehend them. My personal opinion of this book is that it should be reserved for scholars and individuals who have been highly educated this field. With the exceptions of chapters 6 and 8, it is very non-reader friendly and employs many abstract and difficult to follow assertions. In conclusion, it is a very interesting and difficult read, but will reward the patient and informed reader. The Meaning of "Relationship" in Interpersonal Communication OverviewDespite a growing emphasis on relationship studies in interpersonal communication, serious attention to the conceptual meaning of relationship has been limited. The purpose of this volume is to explore the meaning and use of "relationship" in interpersonal communication studies. The contributors to this volume, representatives of related, but differing perspectives, outline definitional boundaries and conceptual implications of the term stemming from their particular ontological and epistemological approaches. This volume provides an engaging and provocative examination of "relationship" by seasoned writers who are committed to seeing the field with new eyes. As such, the book will be invaluable to scholars and researchers in the field.
