Wittgenstein's Art of Investigation ReviewThis book offers not only new information about influences on Wittgenstein, but also new insights into the nature of his philosophy. Savickey describes in fascinating detail the influence of the writer Karl Kraus and the Austrian school reform movement on Wittgenstein. What is most interesting about the book, however, is Savickey's portrait of Wittgenstein as philosophic sceptic. Wittgenstein's grammatical investigations are intended to lead us to the realization of the fundamental inadequacy of ALL philosophical answers and explanations. It is not that the answers of the past have been false, but the future holds out hope for new and better answers. Rather, Wittgenstein regards philosophical questions as inherently unanswerable, and our fascination with them as a kind of disease, and source of perpetual frustration and anxiety. Through philosophical questioning, Wittgenstein aims to lead us outside of philosophy itself, and to the achievement of what Savickey calls "philosophical peace" (p. 131). She writes that "in cases of philosophical perplexity we do not need answers or explanations, rather we need to REMIND ourselves of something" (p. 135). Through Wittgenstein's art of investigation, our yearning for "comprehensive pictures of the universe" is supposed to be overcome. We are thereby freed from the trap that is philosophical seeking, and returned to life. The image that emerges of Wittgenstein here is not unlike that of a Zen master, questioning his students in order to lead them beyond questions, and in fact beyond words and to life and the world itself. Useful comparisons could also be made between Wittgenstein and the tradition of Pyrrho, Hume, and others who purport to reveal the futility of philosophy and the necessity of transcending it. Of course, the book is of special interest to Wittgenstein scholars, but it is accesible enough to serve as a guide to those encountering his work for the first time. It is clearly and elegantly written, and Routledge have done an excellent and tasteful job in packaging the book.Wittgenstein's Art of Investigation OverviewWittgenstein's Art of Investigation is one of the first to focus on and provide an original and detailed analysis of Wittgenstein's grammatical investigations.
